      • Artificial muscles: Non-Stoichiometry Nature, Sensing and Actuating Properties and Tactile Sensibility

        Electro-chemo-mechanical devices or artificial muscles based on conducting polymers (CP) are presented as bilayers, CP/adhesive polymer, or as triple layers, CP/adhesive polymer/CP. Those soft and wet materials, working in aqueous solutions of a salt, mimic the composition of most organs from animals. Under electrochemical control, so working as new electrical machines, they produce continuous, reverse and elegant bending movements, mimicking those produce by animal muscles. By means of the current a perfect controls of the movement rate is attained giving soft and continuous movements. Muscles able to sense the chemical and mechanical conditions of work or muscle having tactile sense, as will be presented here, are being developed. All of them are founded on the non-stoichiometric nature of the soft and wet materials.

        New species of Atomaria Stephens, 1829 (Coleoptera, Cryptophagidae) from China and Taiwan

        Two new species of Atomaria Stephens, 1829 from China and Taiwan are described and illustrated: Atomaria (Atomaria) cooterisp. nov. and Atomaria (Atomaria) johnsoni sp. nov. New records for China and Taiwan are added: Atomaria (Atomaria) klapperichi Johnson, 1971 and Atomaria (Atomaria) plecta Lyubarsky, 1995. New subgeneric combinations are proposed for Atomaria (Atomaria) klapperichi, Atomaria (Atomaria) plecta and Atomaria (Atomaria) torrida Johnson, 1971.         Use of intraoperative impression smear cytology to guide successful treatment of a large renal cyst in a dog: a case report

        A 13-yr-old Shih tzu was referred for surgical management of right-sided cranial abdominal mass, which corresponded to large, cavitated renal mass on ultrasonography, and was suspected to represent neoplasia. Intraoperative impression smear cytology (ISC) of the renal mass wall was consistent with benign renal cyst (RC), without evidence of neoplasia or infection. Deroofing and omentalisation were performed and histopathology was consistent with benign RC. Chronic kidney disease was diagnosed 4 mon postoperatively, however, the dog was asymptomatic, without cyst reoccurrence. Intraoperative ISC is an expedient and inexpensive diagnostic technique that can guide most appropriate treatment in dogs with large RCs.

        Nobody can deny the impact that Bruce Lee made on the silver screen or David Carradine through the television series, ‘Kung Fu’. Almost 50 years after the fact, this influence is undeniable. Truth be told, this amazing martial art that inspires other forms of protection, enjoyed a glorious time. For centuries, it was part of the Shaolin Monks and later, became part in the army training. Not only locally, but worldwide. Understandably so, Kung-fu did come from China more than several millenniums before. It is entirely Chinese, but because of China’s closure to the rest of the world and the art’s secrecy, it nearly died out into the 20th Century. When a concept like this isn’t allowed to expand and have an influx in foreign elements, like Latin which disappeared after the end of the Roman Empire; because the Romans didn’t allow or give space for it to grow. The same was happening with the art of Kung-fu or as it is known in its Pinyin form of Cantonese, ‘Gung-fu/gongfu’. While the Japanese art of Karate (Japanese boxing) and Jujitsu continued to grow outside of Japan; expanding to the far reaches of Brazil and the United States within the Japanese-expat community. For Kung-fu, it disappeared in many parts of China and people lost interest by the 1950s. What made many take interest and allowed it to become popular once again was a young-rising star who came to Hollywood in the 1960s. Lee Jun-fan (many know him better as Bruce Lee, 李小龍) was starring in a T.V. series called, ‘The Green Hornet’ in the United States. It caught the attention of millions of viewers and people began to wonder, especially the male population how they could learn this magical art of self-defense. It is through this investigative paper, I intend to show why these two men made a great impact on the art of Kung-fu; and from a martial way that almost disappeared--to one that flourished once again.

        Background: The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence of carbapenem resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA) in urine cultures in our hospital. Moreover, we determined the mortality and risk factors associated to CRPA infection. Methods: Positive urine cultures to Pseudomonas aeruginosa between september 2012 and september 2013 were identified. We excluded repititive cultures from the same patient and episode. We created a database with demographic, clinical and laboratory items, including previous antibiotic therapy and antimicrobial resistance. Results: Forty-three cases with positive urine cultures to Pseudomonas aeruginosa were included. CRPA was observed in 12cases, with a prevalence of 27.9%. Sixty per cent were male with a median age of 73 years (range: 17-102). Sixty-seven per cent of patients were hospitalized when the culture was collected, but only 30% met criteria to nosocomial infection. Twenty-one percent of urine cultures corresponded to asymptomatic bacteriuria and 25% presented with sepsis. Mortality at 30 days was 20.7% in CRPA patients and 13.8% in the other group, without estatistical significance. Obesity (p =0.003), previous treatment with ciprofloxacin (p = 0.004) and quinolones in general (p = 0.001) and previous treatment with more than one antibiotic (p = 0.03) or with more than one family of antibiotics (p = 0.01) were risk factors to CRPA infection in the univariate analysis. Only obesity (p = 0.04) and previous treatment with ciprofloxacin (p = 0.02) showed statistically significant differences in the multivariate analysis, Conclusions: There is a high prevalence of CRPA in urine cultures in our population, wich is a potencial threat. We should assess the presence of risk factors for development of infections by such pathogen, as previous treatment with quinolones or obesity, in order to start appropiate empirical treatment in patients with severe urinary tract infections.

        The genus Cryptophagus Herbst, 1792 (Coleoptera: Cryptophagidae) in Japan with description of a new species

        The 17 species of the genus Cryptophagus Herbst known from Japan are analysed and revised. The opinions of different authors about the value of the characteristics of the external anatomy are contrasted, and an identification key and figures of the studied species are presented. Cryptophagus jaloszynskii sp. nov is described. Following a detailed study of the type material in different entomological collections, the status of taxa is revised and 3 new synonyms are proposed: Cryptophagus deceptor Grouvelle, 1919 and Cryptophagus longipennis Grouvelle, 1919 are syn. nov. for Cryptophagus dilutus Reitter, 1874 and Cryptophagus longiventris Grouvelle, 1919 syn. nov. for Cryptophagus latangulus Reitter, 1889. Cryptophagus elegans Grouvelle, 1919 resurrected from synonymy with Cryptophagus decoratus Reitter, 1874. A neotype is designated for Cryptophagus elegans Grouvelle, 1918; a lectotype and paralectotype is designated for 7 taxa: Cryptophagus decoratus Reitter, 1874; Cryptophagus deceptor Grouvelle, 1919; Cryptophagus grouvellei Bruce, 1938; Cryptophagus latangulus Reitter, 1889; Cryptophagus lewisi Reitter, 1874; Cryptophagus longior Grouvelle, 1919 and Cryptophagus longiventris Grouvelle, 1919. Cryptophagus zonatus Lyubarsky, 1995 previously known only from China is reported here for the first time from Japan. A key to all the species occurring in Japan is presented.

        Amylase–Trypsin Inhibitors in Wheat and Other Cereals as Potential Activators of the Effects of Nonceliac Gluten Sensitivity

        Nonceliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) is a gluten-related gastrointestinal disorder distinct from celiac disease (CD) and gluten allergy that is not easy to diagnose due to the lack of biomarkers. It is characterized by intestinal symptoms and extraintestinal manifestations with the consumption of gluten-containing foods. In contrast to CD, NCGS patients do not present a genetic predisposition or intestinal villi atrophy. Recent studies question the proinflammatory triggering activity of α-gliadin fraction contained in wheat, since it has been demonstrated that the amylase–trypsin inhibitors (ATIs) exert a strong activating effect on the innate immune response. We aimed to analyze the role of ATIs in the activation of innate immunity and in the development of the symptoms characteristic of NCGS. A systematic literature search was made using databases such as MEDLINE, SciELO, Science Direct, and Scopus, with focus on key words such as “amylase–trypsin inhibitors,” “wheat,” “gluten,” and “celiac.” Many studies are available on the structure, inhibition mechanism, and immune system effects of ATIs, mainly focused on IgE-mediated reactions. Recently, with the increase of NCGS interest, has increased the literature on the capacity of ATIs contained in wheat to activate the innate immune system. Literature published to date questions the relationship between activation of the innate immune system and gluten in NCGS. ATIs may have acted as interfering contaminant of gluten and appear as potential activator of innate immunity in NCGS patients. In view of their potential impact, more interventional studies are needed to demonstrate the proinflammatory effect of ATIs.

        Evolución Reciente y Situación Actual de la Producción y Difusión de Vehículos Eléctricos a Nivel Global y en Latinoamérica

        Encouraged by regulations that seek to mitigate the emission of greenhouse gases, the automotive industry has started an incipient transition to electromobility; so far, this transition has been limited to some of the Western developed countries, as well as Japan, South Korea and China. This transition generates important changes in the technological capabilities and natural resources needed for the development and production of vehicles, and opens a scenario of potential repositioning for firms and countries. In this context, the production of electric vehicles and their regulations are lagging behind in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina – the leading automotive producers in Latin America. However, they have some advantages that could be exploited to reposition themselves in automotive value chains.

        Utility of transoral and transcranial ultrasonography in the diagnosis of internal carotid dissection: a case report

        Background: Internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection is one of the most common causes of stroke in young patients. Ultrasonographic assessment of the carotid artery is the method of choice for early detection. The use of the conventional technique for diagnosis is limited since dissection frequently occurs in the distal portion of the ICA. Case Report: We describe the case of a 48-year-old Argentinian woman with malignant cerebral infarction secondary to ICA dissection. We diagnosed her with neck vessels using conventional ultrasonography and a transoral ultrasonographic approach combined with transcranial ultrasonography. Conclusion: We recommend the transoral assessment of ICA combined with ultrasonography as a non-invasive method for the diagnosis of ICA dissection.
