Design of Structured Surfaces for Directional Mobility of Droplets

This paper deals with the directional mobility of droplets on structured surfaces. Structured surfaces were micro-patterned with rectangular lines and spaces of varying pitch and height in the sub-millimeter range. The material used was polydimethylsiloxane, which is hydrophobic and wettable by oil. First, we studied the effect of the structural design on the sliding angle of pure water or oil through experiments. For pure water droplets, we found that a wider pitch enhanced the directionality. On the other hand, oil droplets spread along the groove because of their low surface tension and strong capillary force. The directionality of the sliding angle of oil droplets was larger than that of pure water, especially when the groove was narrower and deeper. Second, we poured a large amount of liquid on the structure and evaluated the removal rate on the tilted surface. We found that a parallel structure enhanced the liquid mobility for both pure water and oil.

To prevent surface and underground water pollution, wastewater treatment is essential. Four bench-scale activated sludge units (10 L operational volumes) were operated at 5, 10 and $20^{\circ}C$ for evaluation of treatment efficiencies with typical wastewater from swine housing. The units were set for a 24-hour cycle. As compared to the conventional process, high removal efficiencies for organic substances, nitrogen and phosphorus in swine wastewater were obtained simultaneously with an intermittent aeration process (lAP). The NOx-N produced during an aeration period was immediately reduced to nitrogen gas (e.g. $N_2$ or $N_2O$) in the subsequent non-aeration periods, and nitrification in aeration periods occurred smoothly. Under these conditions, phosphorus removal occurred with the release of phosphorus during the non-aeration periods followed by the excess uptake of phosphorus in the activated sludge during aeration periods. It was confirmed that the lAP had a better ability to remove pollutants under both low temperatures and high nitrogen loading conditions than the ordinary method did. In addition to that, the total emission of $N_2O$ from lAP was reduced to approximately 1/50 of the conventional process for the same loading. By adopting an adequate aeration programme for individual swine wastewater treatment, this system will provide a promising means for nitrogen and phosphorus control without pH control or addition of methanol.
Signalling Pathway Involving GULP, MAPK and Rac1 for SR-BI-Induced Phagocytosis of Apoptotic Cells

<P>Class B scavenger receptor type I (SR-BI) is a phosphatidylserine (PS)-recognizing receptor of testicular Sertoli cells responsible for the phagocytosis of spermatogenic cells undergoing apoptosis. Here, we determined signal mediators that compose a signalling pathway for SR-BI-induced phagocytosis. Results of a yeast two-hybrid analysis and a cell-free binding assay indicated that SR-BI binds to engulfment adapter protein (GULP) using the C-terminal intracellular domain. A co-immunoprecipitation analysis showed the existence of a complex of GULP and SR-BI in cells prior to the activation of SR-BI by PS. A reduction of GULP expression in phagocytes decreased the SR-BI-mediated phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. Administration to phagocytes of PS-containing liposomes increased the levels of the GTP-bound form of Rac1 and the phosphorylated forms of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) p38 and extracellular signal-related kinase 1 and 2. Finally, lowering the expression of GULP abrogated MAPK phosphorylation, and the presence of MAPK inhibitors reduced the level of GTP-bound Rac1 in PS-activated phagocytes. These results collectively suggested the following signalling pathway for the SR-BI-induced phagocytosis: (i) PS-recognizing SR-BI activates associated GULP; (ii) activated GULP induces MAPK phosphorylation; (iii) activated MAPK increases GTP-bound Rac1; and (iv) activated Rac1 induces a rearrangement of the actin cytoskeleton.</P>

Gas surface treatment is considered to be effective for titanium because of its high reactivity. In this study, we investigated the gas nitriding mechanism in titanium sintered parts produced by metal powder injection molding (MIM) process. The microstructure and nitrogen content of sintered MIM parts were greatly affected by nitriding conditions. Nitriding process strongly depended on the specimen size, for example, the size of micro metal injection molding (μ-MIM) product is so small and the specific surface is so large that the mechanical and functional properties can be modified by nitriding.

Cephitinea colonella (Erschoff, 1874) (Lepidoptera: Tineidae: Myrmecozelinae) is known as a pest ofstored products. However, detailed information on its life history is poor. In the present investigation,larvae of this species feeding on the rice bran were found in a rice mill. In order to make possible thecorrect identification of the immature stages of C. colonella, their morphology is described and illustrated. In addition, the larval character of the genus is morphologically discussed comparing from allied species.

In Japan, the southern pink moth, Pyrausta inornatalis (Fernald, 1885) (Lepidoptera, Crambidae), which isa pest of Salvia plants, has been recorded as an invasive species from America. In order to make possiblethe correct identification of the immature stages of P. inornatalis, their morphology is described andillustrated.
The genus Agnathosia (Lepidoptera: Meessiidae) new to Japan, with a new record

Agnathosia obisagittalis Xiao & Li, 2011 (Lepidoptera: Meessiidae) was recorded from Japan for the firsttime. This is the first record of the genus from Japan. Photographs of the adult specimens and malegenitalia were given.
