The authors' research group has developed a noncontact type of sensors which directly measure the inter-story drift displacements of a building during a seismic event. Soon after that event, such seismically-induced drift displacement data would provide structural engineers with useful information to judge how the stories have been damaged. This paper presents a scheme of estimating the story cumulative plastic deformation ratios based on such measured drift displacement information toward the building safety monitoring. The presented scheme requires the data of story drift displacements and the ground motion acceleration. The involved calculations are rather simple without any detailed information on structural elements required: the story hysteresis loops are first estimated and then the cumulative plastic deformation ratio of each story is evaluated from the estimated hysteresis. The effectiveness of the scheme is demonstrated by utilizing the data of full-scale building model experiment performed at E-defense and conducting numerical simulations.

Purpose: Despite the long history of drain use in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), no drain has been gaining popularity. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether drainage is related to the length of hospital stay.Materials and Methods: A total of 166 consecutive unilateral TKAs performed on 135 patients with osteoarthritis were retrospectively reviewed. Closed suction drainage was used in 111 cases (67%). Length of hospital stay after surgery was recorded, and a multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to evaluate various variables (patient factors, surgical factors, and postsurgical factors) and to investigate whether drainage was an independent variable.Results: Hospital stay was shorter in no drain cases (21.7±4.8 days) than in drain cases (24.2±3.7 days, p<0.001). The multivariate analysis showed that older age (β=0.12, p=0.02), drain use (β=2.81, p=0.03), and occurrence of comorbidity (β=1.46, p=0.04) were the independent variables associated with the extended hospital stay. There was no difference in comorbidity between drain cases (39.6%) and no drain cases (27.2%, p=0.13). Conclusions: The drain use, age, and occurrence of comorbidity were related to the length of hospital stay. TKA without drain is an effective procedure both medically and economically.

Baekje played an important role in cultural exchanges among Northeast Asian nations including Korea and Japan. Gongju and Buyeo whose entire areas are scattered with Baekje relics are worth being added to the World Heritage List. To begin with, in Gongju, the capital of Baekje during the Ungjin period, remain the ruins of Gongsan Castle, a presumptive palace, and various temples. In addition, the world famous tomb of King Muryong is also located in Gongju. The tomb of King Muryong is considered important in Asia as well as Korea because various relics excavated from it show in detail the actualities of cultural exchanges among Korea, China and Japan. Besides, relics in Mt.Jeongji known to be related to the funeral are also noteworthy. Next, the ruins of Buyeo, Baekje`s third capital, include the remains of Busosan fortress and the sites of Jeongrim temple, Wangheung temple and Neung temple which tell something of Baekje Buddhism. Furthermore, roof tile kiln site like the kiln site of Jungam-ri enables to infer the production culture of ancient times. Baekje remains in Gongju and Buyeo are authentic, safe and universal, and thus are amply worth being designated as world cultural heritages. However, in order to have them designated as world cultural heritages, the title and concept of the application bid should be succinct and clear. In addition, not only cultural heritage but also nearby sceneries should be protected, and this requires the establishment of local ordinances.
