Grass’s Tulla Pokriefke from “Katz und Maus” und “Hundejahre” is like Oskar Matzerath an immortal character, and that in a double sense: She is one of Grass’s most fascinating figures, appearing in several of his works from 1959 to 2002, and she has the immortylity of a demon. In “Katz und Maus”, more explicitly in “Hundejahre”, Grass portrays her as a mermaid and nymphet and invents for her a seven days’ descent into Hades during which the young girl, mourning for her drowned brother Konrad, acquires lethal qualities. Instead of having Tulla drowned in the “Gustloff”- catastrophy, as is rumoured in “Die Rattin”. Grass, while writing “Im Krebsgang”, decides to let her survive and turn the letal demon of his early writings into the herald of the biggest manmade catastrophe in naval history. So Tulla passes on her hatred of world and mankind to her grandson Konrad, thus prolonging forever the chain of evil which started with Adam’s fall.

The contributions of Korean and Taiwanese authors to the many and varied formulations of interwar pan-Asianism have so far remained a relatively unexplored subject of scholarly research, despite an unbroken interest in the trajectory of state-based Japanese pan-Asianism. Focusing on Korean students and independence activists, this article discusses alternative configurations of regional unity and solidarity that emanated from the interactions among Korean, Taiwanese, and other Asian actors who resided in Tokyo during the 1910s and 1920s. When the ethnic-nationalist interpretations of the Wilsonian principle of self-determination failed to materialize, a portion of anti-colonial activists in Asia began to emphasize the need for solidarity by drawing on what they perceived as traditional and shared “Asian” values. While challenging the Western-dominated international order of nation-states that perpetuated imperialism, such notions of Asian solidarity at the same time served as an ideology of liberation from Japanese imperialism. Examining journals published by Korean students and activists, including The Asia Kunglun, this article adds another layer to the history of pan-Asianism from below, a perspective that has often been neglected within the larger context of scholarship on pan-Asianism and Japanese imperialism in Asia.

TNF-$\alpha$ plays a pivotal role in inflammation processes which are mainly regulated by endothelial cells. While TNF-$\alpha$ induces apoptosis of several cell types like tumor cells, endothelial cells are resistant to TNFa mediated cell death. The cytotoxic effects of TNF-$\alpha$ on most cells are only evident if RNA or protein synthesis is inhibited, suggesting that de novo RNA or protein synthesis protect cells from TNF-$\alpha$ cytotoxicity, presumably by NF-${\kappa}B$ mediated induction of protective genes. However, the cytoprotective genes involved in NF-${\kappa}B$ dependent endothelial cell survival have not been sufficiently identified. In the present study, the suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) method was employed to identify rarely transcribed TNF-$\alpha$ inducible genes in human arterial endothelial cells related to cell survival and cell cycle. The TNF-$\alpha$-induced expression of the RNA binding protein $p54^{nrb}$ and the 14-3-3 protein HS1 as shown here for the first time may contribute to the TNF-$\alpha$ mediated cell protection of endothelial cells. These genes have been shown to play pivotal roles in cell survival and cell cycle control in different experimental settings. The concerted expression of these genes together with other genes related to cell protection and cell cycle like DnaJ, $p21^{cip1}$ and the ubiquitin activating enzyme E1 demonstrates the identification of new genes in the context of TNF-$\alpha$ induced gene expression patterns mediating the prosurvival effect of TNF-$\alpha$ in endothelial cells.

The diversity of RNA functions ranges from storage and propagation of genetic information to enzymatic activity during RNA processing and protein synthesis. This diversity of functions requires an equally diverse arrays of structures, and, very often, the formation of functional RNA-protein complexes. Recognition of specific RNA signals by RNA-binding proteins is central to all aspects of post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. We will describe how NMR is being used to understand at the atomic level how these important biological processes occur.

Objective: There is conflicting and limited literature on the effect of intraoperative resident involvement on surgical outcomes. Our study assessed effects of resident involvement on outcomes in patients undergoing neurosurgery. Methods: We identified 33,977 adult neurosurgical cases from 374 hospitals in the 2006–2012 National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, a prospectively collected national database with established reproducibility and validity. Outcomes were compared according to resident involvement before and after 1:1 matching on procedure and perioperative risk factors. Results: Resident involvement was documented in 13,654 cases. We matched 10,170 resident-involved cases with 10,170 attending-alone. In the matched sample, resident involvement was associated with increased surgery duration (average, 34 minutes) and slight increases in odds for prolonged hospital stay (odds ratio, 1.2; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.2–1.3) and complications (odds ratio, 1.2; 95% CI, 1.1–1.3) including infections (odds ratio, 1.4; 95% CI, 1.2–1.7). Increased risk for infections persisted after controlling for surgery duration (odds ratio, 1.3; 95% CI, 1.1–1.5). The majority of cases were spine surgeries, and resident involvement was not associated with morbidity or mortality for malignant tumor and aneurysm patients. Training level of residents was not associated with differences in outcomes. Conclusion: Resident involvement was more common in sicker patients undergoing complex procedures, consistent with academic centers undertaking more complex cases. After controlling for patient and intraoperative characteristics, resident involvement in neurosurgical cases continued to be associated with longer surgical duration and slightly higher infection rates. Longer surgery duration did not account for differences in infection rates.
