Spatially-explicit wildlife habitat models, such as a Habitat Suitability Index Model (HSIM), are increasingly used to understand optimal environmental conditions needed for a species survival and viability. HSIM compares different environmental variables, including vegetation, slope, and aspect to determine optimal habitat for a species. HSIM can compare a species’ use of resources with availability and determine risks for a species viability. Furthermore, decision makers can use HSIM to make decisions regarding resources needed for species of concern and development of protected areas. We used a geographic information system to create a HSIM for Argali sheep (Ovis ammon) and Siberian ibex (Capra siberica), species of conservation concern in Mongolia. We used vegetation and ruggedness layers and compared argali and ibex use with habitat availability. Argali and ibex presence correlated with three habitat classes: dense rock, low-density shrub, and short grass/forb. We found no significance in correlation for ruggedness.
Creating a Culturally Responsive K-3 Science Curriculum: Teachers as Cultural Brokers
Nanette S. Schonleber,Ivy K. Kelling 한국유아교육학회 2018 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Vol.24 No.1
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate and analyze the processes and initial outcomes of a K-3 Hawaiian culture-based science program created collaboratively by five Hawaiian language immersion early childhood teachers, their administrator, and a university professor. Data collection included semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with the five K-3 educators and their administrator, analysis of teacher and student work samples and reflections, and individual classroom observations. Data analysis revealed an increase in science content confidence and self- efficacy in both teaching and learning the sciences. Three emergent themes led to a grounded theory implicating both the importance of ongoing professional development and the use of place-based practices in indigenous education. Suggestions are offered for educators wishing to adapt or create culture-based science programs to increase equity and access to the sciences for diverse young children.
Sustainability Reporting of Telecommunications Companies: Evidence from the Philippines
Hanna D,Miranda-Quibot,Nanette A,Aquino,Juan Paulino S,Trespalacio,Junior,Mar B,Cruz 아시아무역학회 2020 Journal of Asia Trade and Business Vol.7 No.1
Purpose - The telecommunications companies in the Philippines are required to submit Sustainability Reports that disclose their economic, environmental, and social responsibilities according to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This is to show transparency in all their activities related to the economic, environmental and social dimensions that should be presented to different stakeholders. Thus, this study aimed to determine the extent of sustainability reporting of top telecommunications companies in the Philippines. Design/Methodology/Approach - The sustainability reports of two top telecommunications companies in the Philippines, namely, PLDT and Globe Telecom, were examined using content analysis and by assigning scores to the indicators disclosed in the reports. Findings - Based from the results, both companies took active participation in providing benefits, education, training and a good working environment for their employees while continuously providing support to the local community. PLDT extensively disclosed more information using the sustainability standards as compared to Globe Telecom. Research Implications - However, to strike a balance among the three dimensions, the indicators must be examined because correctly communicating the CSR activities covering the three dimensions is an effective way for the company to establish a good reputation and for the stakeholders to make the right decisions.
Buying Patterns and Consumer Preferences for Chicken Meat and Pork : The Philippine Scenario
Charisse Joyce T. Reyes,Nanette C. Abelilla-Aquino,Agnes T. Banzon,Dinah Pura T. Depositario,Jeanette Angeline B. Madamba 한국무역연구원 2009 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.5 No.1
The global meat trade is tremendous (estimated at 100 million metric tons for pork alone in 2006) with poultry, beef and pork tagged as the three most important meat commodities. Differences in residential base, meat type and cut preferences, trade barriers and industry structure dictate specific meat trade flows among countries and regions. This paper analyzes the current buying patterns and preferences of consumers for poultry and pork in a diverse community in the Philippines, one of the emerging markets in Southeast Asia, through both descriptive and quantitative analyses. Socio-demographic, market-related and product-related variables were hypothesized to have an effect on consumer buying patterns and preferences for chicken and pork. Data was gathered from 182 households and covered both wet market and supermarket buyers. Those who bought from the wet markets did so because of the perceived freshness of meat, nearness of these markets to their residence, the constant availability of meat, and longer operating hours of the markets. On the other hand, supermarket buyers preferred to buy meat from supermarkets in view of assurance of safety, the adequacy of parking space, better cuts of meat and the availability and variety of meat products offered. Out of the variables tested quantitatively, only household income, educational attainment and prices of commodities were found to have a significant effect on consumer buying patterns. These variables were found to affect the quantity demanded, frequency of purchase and choice of marketplaces. Consumers with higher educational attainment consumed more chicken and pork compared to those with lower educational attainment. Households with higher income purchased and consumed higher volumes of chicken as well as pork and also purchased meat more frequently than those who belong to lower income groups. In addition, they usually buy from supermarkets than from wet markets. Lastly, an increase in meat prices was found to increase the probability of consumers buying chicken and pork from wet markets. Knowledge of Filipino household buying patterns and preferences could assist retailers, suppliers and producers of poultry and pork in promoting their products and devising strategies to ensure consumer loyalty and patronage.

The study determined the efficiency and performance of the distribution chain of marine capture fisheries in Lucena Fish Port Complex, Lucena City, Philippines. A survey using a pre-tested questionnaire was conducted among 125 respondents consisting of fishermen, traders, truckers, wholesalers and retailers. Simple random sampling was used to identify the fishermen, traders and retailers while complete enumeration was done in the case of truckers and wholesalers. Descriptive, product flow, value chain and cost and return analyses were employed in the study. Based on the performance measures used in the study, including the gross margins computed, the performance of the distribution and transportation system of marine capture fisheries products in Lucena Fish Port Complex can be considered inefficient due to high transportation rates, high spoilage rate, and longer traveling hours than what is expected. The study recommended technology development for improved operations, introduction of the open bidding system to prevent information asymmetry, practice of responsible fishing, key players to assume other roles in the chain, planning ahead the use of alternative roads, ensuring proper management practices, construction of paved roads. securing fishing permits and full utilization of the cold storage facility.

Double-chambered right ventricle (DCRV) is an uncommon congenital anomaly in which anomalous muscle bands divide theright ventricle into two chambers; a proximal high-pressure and distal low-pressure chamber. It may be associated with midright ventricular obstruction. It is commonly associated with other congenital anomalies, most frequently perimembranousventricular septal defect (PM-VSD). We herein present 5 adult patients with concomitant DCRV and PM-VSD who varied intheir symptomatic presentations and the ways of management.
