In this study, the antioxidant activity and protective effect of Salvia plebeia herb ethanol extract (SPE) on SH-SY5Y cells induced by oxidative stress was investigated. As a result, the total phenol content was 35.94 mg GAE/g and total flavonoid content was 50.44 mg/g in SPE. SPE showed strong DPPH radical scavenging efficacy at concentrations of 100 μg/mL and 200 μg/mL, showing 89.13% and 88.27%, respectively (IC50 : 18.66 μg/mL). SPE also scavenged ABTS radical in a dose-dependent manner. Especially, 200 μg/mL SPE showed the highest ABTS radical scavenging efficacy, showing 91.82%. SPE showed high ·OH radical elimination at concentrations of 25, 50, 75, 100, and 200 μg/mL, indicating over 90% scavenging activity among all groups. Treatment with hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂, 500 μM) induced neuronal cells death (63.72%) compared to non-treated cells (100%). However, SPE treatment significantly increased cell viability. In addition, in the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay, a decrease in the amount of LDH release was observed in SPE-treated group. Compared to the control group (183.26%), the amount of LDH release was 46.03% at the concentration of 100 μg/mL.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that usually affects the central portion of the face. Although there is no curative treatment for rosacea, tetracycline has been the mainstay therapy. A 37-year-old female was referred to our department presenting with erythematous scaly patches and pustules on the face. She had been treated for rosacea with oral antihistamine, topical metronidazole, and 595nm-pulsed-dye laser therapy. However, the symptoms had not improved despite the treatments and eventually worsened. We treated the patient with an oral combination of propranolol, minocycline, and tranexamic acid and noticeable improvement of erythema and subjective symptoms was noted. Although the exact mechanisms and possible interactions of the triple combination treatment are not yet known, it suggest that this therapeutic regimen may be a possible strategy for treatment of rosacea. Herein, we report a case of successful treatment of rosacea with propranolol, minocycline and tranexamic acid.

The aim of this study is to investigate the expression of MIS type II receptor (MISR II), the mechanism of growth inhibition and whether the combination of calcitriol and Mullerian inhibiting substance (MIS) exhibit synergistic effects to inhibit the proliferation and induce apoptosis in primary cultures of human ovarian cancer cell lines (SKOV-3, OVCAR-3, and OVCA-433). Expression of MISR II were studied in SKOV-3, OVAR-3, and OVCA-433 cell lines by western blot perform with a rabbit polyclonal antihuman MISR II antiserum. The antiproliferative effects of MIS in these cell lines were investigated by methyltiazoletetrazolium (MTT) assay, fluorescence- activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis, annexin-V-FITC binding. All cell lines showed strong specific staining for MISR II, although OVCA-433 cells was more intense than that in SKOV-3, and OVCAR-3. Treatment of ovarian cancer cell (SKOV-3, OVCAR-3, and OVCAR-433) with MIS and calcitriol led to a dose- and time- dependent inhibition of cell growth and survival was determined use by MTT assay. Although the precise mechanism of MIS-mediated of ovarian cancer cell growth has not been fully defined, the results support a central role for MIS combined with calcitriol in ovarian cancer. These data suggest that MIS combined with calcitriol have activity against ovarian cancers in vitro and may also be an effective targeted therapy for ovarian cancer.
Ginsenoside Rg1 from Panax ginseng enhances myoblast differentiation and myotube growth

Background: Ginsenoside Rg1 belongs to protopanaxatriol-type ginsenosides and has diverse pharmacological activities. In this report, we investigated whether Rg1 could upregulate muscular stem cell differentiation and muscle growth. Methods: C2C12 myoblasts, MyoD-transfected 10T1/2 embryonic fibroblasts, and HEK293T cells were treated with Rg1 and differentiated for 2 d, subjected to immunoblotting, immunocytochemistry, or immunoprecipitation. Results: Rg1 activated promyogenic kinases, p38MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) and Akt signaling, that in turn promote the heterodimerization with MyoD and E proteins, resulting in enhancing myogenic differentiation. Through the activation of Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin pathway, Rg1 induced myotube growth and prevented dexamethasone-induced myotube atrophy. Furthermore, Rg1 increased MyoD-dependent myogenic conversion of fibroblast. Conclusion: Rg1 upregulates promyogenic kinases, especially Akt, resulting in improvement of myoblast differentiation and myotube growth.

This paper provides a comprehensive description of the serum anti-Mullerian hormone levels in Korean women associated with age, past medical history, and gynecologic surgical status. We reviewed medical records and evaluated the serum AMH levels on day 2-3 of a spontaneous menstrual cycle in 2454 Korean women of reproductive age ranging from 20 to 45 years old between January 2010 and June 2013, retrospectively. 1250 patients underwent gynecologic surgery via laparotomy or laparoscopy for benign gynecologic disease. The patients were divided into 4 groups according to the type of ovarian surgery; Group 1 who received simple hysterectomy without ovarian surgery, Group 2 who received unilateral ovarian cystectomy or oophorectomy, Group 3 who received bilateral ovarian cystectomy or unilateral oophorectomy with contralateral ovarian cystectomy; Group 4 comprised of 420 patients who received bilateral oophorectomy. The mean age was 33.93 ± 6.82 years. The overall mean AMH value was 3.75 ± 4.65 ng/mL. Serum AMH level showed an age-dependent distribution and correlated negatively with age. There was no significant difference of AMH level in patients of group 1, group 2, and group 3. AMH was not detectable in any patients of group 4. Our data showed reference values of serum AMH in Korean women with regular menstruation. These values can be applied to an important information of ovarian reserve for OB-GYN patients.
Noninvasive size reduction of lipoma with an insulated monopolar radiofrequency microneedle device

Lipoma is a common benign adipose tumor which usually appears as painless, round and mobile mass. Surgical excision is considered as the treatment of choice for lipoma. However, some patients are reluctant to undergo an operation due to the risk of scarring especially when the lesion occurred on the exposed area such as face. A radiofrequency (RF) microneedle device can create a thermal coagulation zone at a controlled depth around the needle tip without unwanted epidermal damage. A 54-year-old healthy male presented with a painless slow-growing mass on his right cheek. Ultrasonography revealed an oval compressible hyperechoic mass with a fat density. Under the clinical and ultrasonographic impression of lipoma, monopolar RF device with insulated microneedle was chosen for a minimally invasive treatment. After the repeated sessions of treatment, the volume of the affected cheek was dramatically diminished and the patient was very satisfied with the outcome. In this study, we report size reduction and cosmetic improvements in a large facial lipoma treated with a novel RF microneedle device.
A case of acute diffuse and total alopecia requiring differential diagnosis with alopecia totalis

Acute diffuse and total alopecia (ADTA) is a recently established subtype of alopecia areata (AA). Typically, ADTA, showing marked female predominance, initially develops without remarkable alopecic patch, progresses rapidly involving over than 80% of scalp area and resolves within 6 months. A 37-year-old female patient presented with diffuse hair loss on the scalp since 3 months ago. Histopathological examination revealed moderate peribulbar eosinophilic inflammation around the follicles. She showed remarkable improvement after being treated with systemic steroid, 308-nm excimer laser and intralesional injection. ADTA can be misdiagnosed initially as alopecia totalis (AT) since their similar clinical aspect of diffuse hair loss. However, ADTA can be distinguished from AT by its better prognosis and perifollicular eosinophilic infiltration. Herein, we reported a case of ADTA with favorable prognosis and typical histopathological feature.
