The current study examined the reliability and applicability of the Chinese translated versions of the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale ?Revised (ECERS-R) and Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale ?Extension (ECERS-E) as formative tools for use by local practitioners to perform selfevaluations on the various aspects of the educational environments being provided to pre-school children in their own settings with the goal of helping to facilitate changes that may help to enhance the quality of educational experiences for young children. Five registered kindergartens were recruited and received trainings in the administration of the said tools by the PECERA-HK (ECERS) professional team. Three assessment trials were administered in three different phases. For each trial, teacher representatives from each kindergarten completed the assessment using the said tools together with the trainers. Discussions were also held with the trainers on their observations. Internal reliability for the tools was found to be quite robust. Qualitative findings also suggested that the ECERS-R and ECERS-E can serve to assist practitioners in identifying the respective strengths and weaknesses in the educational environment they were providing to children and in setting clear directions for making corresponding improvements.
Fluorescence energy transfer-labeled primers for high-performance forensic DNA profiling

<P>A fluorescence energy transfer (ET) dye-labeled STR typing system (ET 16-plex) is developed for the markers used in the commercial STR typing kit PowerPlex 16, and its performance assessed using a 96-lane microfabricated capillary array electrophoresis (μCAE) system. The ET 16-plex amplicons displayed 1.6–9-fold higher fluorescence intensities compared to those produced using the single-dye (SD)-labeled multiplex kits. The ET multiplex delivered full STR profiles from 62.5 pg of DNA; half the input required for the SD kits while maintaining a similar heterozygote allele balance. This increased sensitivity should improve typing of poor-quality DNA samples by making minor or imbalanced alleles more readily detectable at the low copy number (LCN) threshold. The ET 16-plex also generated complete profiles with only 28 PCR cycles; this capability should improve LCN typing by reducing the amplification time and drop-in allele incidence. To confirm the practical advantages of ET-labeled primers, six previously problematic casework samples were tested and only the ET 16-plex kit was able to capture additional allele data. The successful development and demonstration of ET primers for higher sensitivity STR typing offers a simple solution to improving current commercial multiplex typing capability. The superior spectral properties and universal compatibility with any primer sequence provided by ET cassettes will make future multiplex construction more facile and straightforward. The pairing of ET cassette technology with the μCAE system illustrates not only an enhanced STR typing platform, but a significant step toward a higher-efficiency forensic laboratory enabled by better chemistry and microfluidics.</P>

초소형 위성 큐브셋은 개발기간의 단축과 신뢰성 향상 위해 표준화된 플랫폼을 만족하는 상용부품을 사용하여 항공전자부를 구성하여 사용하는 반면, 위성의 임무를 수행하는 탑재체는 큐브셋의 표준화된 인터페이스와 달리 제작되는 경우가 있다. 본 연구에서는 FPGA를 이용하여 경희대학교에서 제작한 초소형 위성 CINEMA (Cubesat for Ion, Neutral, Electron and MAgnetic field)의 주 컴퓨터와 탑재체 간인터페이스를 구성하는 모듈을 제작하였다. 본 인터페이스 모듈의 FPGA는 위성의 주 컴퓨터와 탑재체간의 통신 인터페이스를 제공하고, 주 컴퓨터의 연산의 부하를 줄여주어 데이터 처리 효율을 높여준다. 또한 본 모듈은 탑재체가 요구하는 다양한 전원을 제공하며, 초소형 위성에 자주 사용되는 소형의 회로들을 내장하고 있다. The standard spacecraft, known as CubeSat, utilizes Commercial-Off-The Shelf (COTS) electronics to build the bus avionics, while payloads are usually built according to a particular method that does not conform to the standard. Particularly in the CubeSat for Ions, Neutrals, Electrons, and Magnetic fields (CINEMA) spacecraft, Instrument Interface module between the on-board-computer (OBC) and the mission payloads is developed to provide required communication and power interfaces. The module mainly consists of FPGA to provide communication interfaces and to support limited computing power of the OBC and peripheral sub-circuits that are frequently used in small spacecraft.
The Concept for A Standalone Lordotic Endoscopic Wedge Lumbar Interbody Fusion: The LEW-LIF

Objective: To review concepts of a standalone endoscopically assisted lumbar interbody fusion as a simplified method to treat spinal instability. Methods: MacNab outcomes and complications were analyzed in a series of 48 consecutive patients who underwent standalone lordotic endoscopic wedge lumbar interbody fusion (LEW-LIF) for advanced lumbar disc degeneration, spinal stenosis, and spondylolisthesis. Results: Forty-two of the 48 patients (77.8%) did well with excellent and good outcomes with a follow up of up to 20 months. Fair outcomes were reported by 4, and poor by another 2 patients, respectively. Six patients had endoscopic decompression procedures at another level. Four patients underwent open transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion revision surgery including the index level between 2 to 6 months postoperatively. An L5 vertebral body fracture was noted in 1 of these 4 patients. Another patient underwent removal of the extruded L3/4 cage. The cage fractured in one additional asymptomatic patient not requiring any intervention. No patient had a wound infection, or permanent sensory, or motor dysfunction. However, 29 patients developed a postoperative irritation of the dorsal root ganglion with burning leg pain typically between postoperative weeks 2 and 6. Symptoms were treated with activity modification, gabapentin, and transforaminal epidural steroid injections in 12 patients (25%). Conclusion: Standalone LEW-LIF was associated with favorable clinical outcomes in the majority of patients. Patient-related predictors of less favorable outcomes considering normal variations as well as patho-anatomy may aid in the development of next-generation implants.
