A non-toxic boron-containing material, carborane (C2B10H12) has been utilized to deposit amorphous hydrogenated carbon/boron (a-C/B:H) thin films in helium DC glow discharge. Helium plasma was produced by a filament discharge system connected with the carborane evaporation source at a target pressure of ~5 mTorr. The plasma discharge was performed by a pulsed mode at a duty cycle of 0.375 (3 s on/5 s off) or 0.23 (3 s on/10 s off). Deposited a-C/B:H thin films are characterized by variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry, scanning electron microscope, Auger electron spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The a-C/B:H thin films show soft polymer-like characteristics with optical constants of n=1.65 and k=10-3 at 632 nm and the B/C ratio inside the bulk is ~2 with ~60 % of boron contents. Evaporation characteristics of carborane powder under vacuum is also investigated.

- The SF6 gas insulated power equipments have the insulation systems which are composed of SF6 gas and insulation paper. It is repored that their insulation abilities are influenced by the SF6 gas gaps in those insulation systems and gas pressures. This paper describes partial discharge phenomena with SF6 gas pressures in insulation system of SF6 gas-insulation paper. Specimens of SF6 gas-insulation paper were prepared and aramid paper was used as insulation paper. Partial discharge inception voltages(PDIV) and breakdown voltages for the existence of SF6 gas gaps were measured by short term tests with gas pressures. Also, average PD quantities and pulse counts, life times of each specimens were calculated from the results of long term aging tests with gas pressures. It was found that the SF6 gas gaps decrease increasing rates of PDIV and brealdown voltages according to gas pressure increase and the insulation breakdown caused by the smaller PD quantities than 1[pC] at the high gas pressure of 300kPa is due to the increase of energy density with increase of gas pressure.
