        Technical efficiency comparison of container ports in Asian and Middle East region using DEA

        With the instigation of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the strategic significance of South Asian and Middle Eastern ports have been vitalized. The aim of this study is to compare the technical efficiency of less explored South Asian & Middle Eastern ports with the East Asian ports and determine ways for their efficiency enhancement and management optimization. The cross sectional data for the year 2018 was collected for 15 container ports each of South & Middle Eastern and East Asian region and arranged into input and output variables. The data was analyzed through the DEA-CCR and DEA-BCC model. Results indicate that only one port each from UAE and India among the Middle & South Asian ports were found efficient on CCR model with the number of efficient ports on BCC model increased by 47%. While, in East Asian region two ports of China and one of South Korea were found efficient on CCR model, with 33% increase on BCC model. Lianyungang port was the most prominent among the efficient ports being highly benchmarked. The average efficiency for East Asian region (CCR: 0.524, BCC: 0.901) remained similar to that of South Asian and Middle East Region (CCR: 0.517, BCC: 0.906).

        Relation between Left Atrial Remodeling in Young Patients with Cryptogenic Stroke and Normal Inter-atrial Anatomy

        Background and Purpose To investigate an association between left atrial (LA) structural and P wave dispersion (PWD) during sinus rhythm, and electrical remodeling in cryptogenic stroke (CS) patients. Methods Forty CS patients and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled. P wave calculations were based on 12-lead electrocardiography (ECG) at a 50-mm/s-paper speed with an amplitude of 10 mm/mV. Difference between the maximum and minimum P wave duration was the P wave dispersion (PWD=Pmax-Pmin). LA deformation was evaluated by speckle tracking echocardiography within 3 days of the acute event. Results PWD was 30.1±7.0 ms and 27.4±3.5 ms in CS and control group (P=0.02), whereas LA maximum volume index [LAVImax] was 20.4±4.5 mL/m2 and 19.9±2.4 mL/m2 in CS and control group, respectively (P=0.04). While global peak LA strain was [pLA-S] (LA reservoir function) 41.4±6.3% and 44.5±7.1% in CS and control group, (P=0.04), global peak late diastolic strain rate values [pLA-SRa] (LA pump function) were 2.5±0.4% and 2.9±0.5% in CS and control group, respectively (P=0.001). A mild and a strong negative correlation between global pLA-S and LAVImax (r=-0.49; P<0.01), and between PWD and global pLA-S (r=-0.52; P<0.01), respectively, was observed in CS. Conclusions Increased PWD is associated with impaired LA mechanical functions and enlargement, and involved in the pathophysiology of AF or an AF-like physiology in CS.

        INFECTIOUS STUNTING SYNDROME OF BROILER CHICKS I. CLINICAL SIGNS AND PATHOLOGICAL LESIONS

        This study represented an endeavor to observe clinical signs and pathological lesions in broiler chicks suffering from experimental Infectious stunting syndrome(ISS). One hundred and twenty day old broiler chicks were divide randomly into two equal groups i.e. control (A) and inoculated (B). At day one of age each chick of the groups (A and B) was dosed with one ml of either tryptose phosphate broth or prepared inoculum respectively. Chicks of both the groups were housed separately under similar standard management. Inoculation induced characteristic clinical changes in birds of treatment group like of brownish diarrhea, lameness, feather developing problems and paleness of combs, wattles and shanks. By day-29 of the experiment all the stunted birds from group-B and an equal number of birds from group-A were slaughtered. These birds were examined thoroughly to record the gross changes in various structures and then the severely affected organs were processed for histopathological examination. The skeletons of affected birds were brittle, keel bones showed quite prominence while the muscles and subcutaneous tissues were almost devoid of fat. Grossly it was observed that pancreas, spleen and bursa of Fabricius were severely atrophied while the intestines were ballooned with undigested feed and gases. Histopathological examination of pancreas and spleen revealed a classical picture necessary for understanding the pathogenesis of the syndrome. The acivar cells of pancreas were atrophied and underwent vacuolation, degeneration and vecrosis. The zymogen granules were almost absent from the acinar cells. A characteristic change was an inflammatory reaction in one or more pancreatic ducts where the epithelium and fibrous tissues occluded the lumen of the ducts and led to the obstruction in pancreatic drainage.

        Characterization and application of nano-composite zinc oxide/poly vinyl alcohol thin-film in solar cell performance enhancement

        Flexible, economical, and low-toxic organic solar cells are becoming highly popular in photovoltaic research. Interestingly, its efficiency of energy conversion remains lower than that of silicon-based solar cells. As a result, it is unavoidable to focus on organic solar cell efficiency enhancement. This article presents a nano-composite thin-film developed using zinc oxide (ZnO) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with a solution casting technique varying weight percentage (wt.%) of ZnO into the PVA matrix. The characterization of the thin-film of ZnO/PVA has been made using SEM, XRD, FTIR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The characterization reveals that the ZnO nanoparticle network forms an excellent path for electron flow in the PVA matrix at the optimal ZnO concentration of 16.66 % and a PVA concentration of 83.33 %. The thin film was applied to an organic solar cell of architecture consists of carbon fiber reinforced with ZnO-epoxy resin/CuO-epoxy resin for performance investigation. The solar cell's maximum efficiency was determined to be 9.01 % before and 14.65 % after using the nanocomposite film. 5.64 % increase in the efficiency of organic solar cells are observed after the ZnO/PVA nanocomposite thin film is applied.

      • Regression Analysis for Deploying UTC and the Resulting Energy Consumption in Pig Barns

        There is high energy loss through ventilation in livestock barns as well as in electricity consumed by lamps. Using unglazed transpired collectors is a good solution to decrease such energy loss. Nevertheless, it is required to establish UTC control system and operating methods in order to provide comfortable room temperature for the pig barn. Hence, this paper aims to rise temperature of pig barns by UTC control system, evaluate the thermal performance of UTC, and analyze the resulting electricity usage. A UTC fan was operated for 7 hours per day and the UTC control system was applied. Therefore an average rise of 27.6°C in temperature, as compared to ambient temperature, was observed. Regression models, linear and non-linear, were established using indoor and outdoor temperature data values. Henceforth, a correlation analysis was done between solar radiation and collector surface temperature. This model’s R2 for linear and non-linear models were 0.93 and 0.92, respectively. The application of UTC control system had decreased the electricity consumption by 30.8%.

        THE LENGTH-BIASED POWERED INVERSE RAYLEIGH DISTRIBUTION WITH APPLICATIONS

        This article introduces a new distribution called length-biased powered inverse Rayleigh distribution. Some of its statistical properties are derived. Maximum likelihood procedure is applied to report the point and interval estimations of all model parameters. The proposed distribution is also applied to two real data sets for illustrative purposes.

        Assessment of Combined Trichoderma-Enriched Biofertilizer and Nutrients Solutions on the Growth and Yield of Strawberry Plants

        Purpose The use of biofertilizers not only decreases the level of a nutrient solution but also improves the growth of plants and reduces the risk of environmental pollution. In this study, the impact of Trichoderma-enriched biofertilizer (poultry manure composted and Trichoderma harzianum YC459 (TEB), standard nutrient solution (SNS), and the combination of both (TEB + SNS) were utilized to evaluate the growth, yield, and nutritional quality of strawberry plants (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.). Method The strawberry plants were planted in four treatments—control soil (CS, without TEB and SNS), T1 (SNS), T2 (TEB), and T3 (50% SNS + 50% TEB) — in a controlled greenhouse. Several scientific instruments such as a ubiquitous broadcast network (UBN) farm link control management system, sensor nodes, nutrient controller, composting reactor, digital refractor meter, dry oven, digital balance, and different chemical techniques were used for a particular purpose. Results Consequently, analysis of variance was performed, and a significant increase in yield values (123.07–145.83% and 88.46–100.00%) was recorded over control by T3 and T1, respectively. Also, the vegetative growth parameters, total soluble solids, ascorbic acid, and total sugar content were observed higher in T3. Conclusion It was observed that the combined use of Trichoderma-enriched biofertilizer with the standard nutrient solution could improve the growth, yield, and quality of the strawberry plant.

        Endoscopic removal of common bile duct stones in nonagenarians: a tertiary centre experience

        Background/Aims: There are few studies assessed the efficacy and mortality of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) for the removal of common bile duct (CBD) stones in the elderly aged ≥90 years. We aimed to assess the safety and efficacy ofendoscopic removal of CBD stones in nonagenarians. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed ERCP reports for CBD stone removal. The endoscopic and therapeutic outcomes were collected. The length of stay (LOS), the total number of adverse events, and mortality rate were compared between groups. Results: A total of 125 nonagenarians were compared with 1,370 controls (65–89 years old individuals). The mean LOS for nonagenarianswas significantly higher than in controls (13.6 days vs. 6.5 days). Completed intended treatment was similar in the nonagenariansand controls (89.8% and 89.5%, respectively). The overall complication rate did not differ between the groups. However, nonagenarianshad a higher incidence of post-ERCP pneumonia (3.9%). None of the nonagenarians were readmitted to the hospital within 7 days. Four nonagenarians (3.2%) and 25 (1.8%) controls died within 30 days. Conclusions: Advanced age alone did not affect the decision to perform the procedure. However, prompt diagnosis and treatment ofpost-ERCP pneumonia in nonagenarians could improve the outcomes and reduce mortality.

        Forced Aerated Poultry Compost Effects on Soil Physicochemical Properties and Lettuce Plant Growth

        Purpose In previous studies, the stability and maturity of forced aerated composts were examined from the physicochemical analysis inside the reactors. The objective of this study is to check the maturity and effects of forced aerated composts after its addition to soil and plants. Methods The composts were prepared from fresh chicken manure and sawdust in cylindrical reactors and aerated at 0.75, 0.50, and 0.25 L min−1 kg−1 organic matter (OM) for 1 month. Afterward, it was mixed with soil and coded as treatment T1 (0.75 L min−1 kg−1 OM aeration rate + soil), T2 (0.50 L min−1 kg−1 OM aeration rate + soil), T3 (0.25 L min−1 kg−1 OM aeration rate + soil), and CS (only soil), respectively. The soil properties (pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic matter content (OM), loss of organic matter content, bulk density (BD), water holding(WH)) and plant growth (shoot length (cm), leaves’ area (cm2), fresh and dry weight (g)) were checked for 4 months. Results The results showed a significant increase (at P < 0.05) in soil properties in T1, T2, and T3 as compared with CS. Among treatments T1, T2, and T3, the maximumpH (7.20 ± 0.07),OMdegradation (77.06%), loss of organic matter (6.32 ± 0.42%), and WH (32.17 ± 0.32%) were observed in T3. Additionally, the lowest EC (1.15 ± 0.02 mS/cm) and BD (1.06 ± 0.02%) were observed in T3. Further a significant increased difference (at P < 0.05) in shoot length (21.40 ± 1.01 cm), leaves’ area (293.20 ± 16.33 cm2), fresh weight (88.22 ± 7.30 g), and dry weight (12.10 ± 0.91 g) of the plant were observed in T3. Conclusion The poultry manure compost’s aerated rate (0.25 L min−1 kg−1 OM) in T3 was observed to be more mature and stable as compared with T1 and T2.

      • Assessments of different types of biodegradable pots strength and its effects on plant growth

        This work is to increase the positive footprint of paper waste products by designing ‘‘eco-effective’’ solutions according to the regenerative design framework. Reutilization of five kinds of pots(waste of newspaper) is proposed here to close the loop at the end of the product life cycle. The aim was to design, manufacture and examine the strength of biodegradable pots were evaluated after the cultivation of paper plants. It is expected that by understanding the degradation rate of the investigated products and to support plant growth, it will be possible to optimize paper pots manufacturing to assure sufficient mechanical resistance and the desired rate of degradation. Five kinds (S0, S1, S1-1, S2, and S2-1) of biodegradable pots were made from old newspaper, and chilly plants were planted in the control greenhouse. Consequently, analysis of variance was performed, and a significant increase in holding moisture content was observed in S1 (73.75±1.92 %). The plant height (15.60±0.99 cm), stem diameter (1.60±0.20 cm), leaves length (3.51±0.0.20 cm) was higher in the S1 pots. However, the regression analysis values in the case of tension (R²=0.63) and compression (R²=0.99) with moisture content was shown by S0. It was concluded that S1 positively improve the growth of plants and hold optimum moisture content.
