Suction Performance and Cavitation Instabilities of Turbopumps with Three Different Inducer Design

In the present study, the suction performance and the cavitation instabilities in turbo-pumps with three different inducers designed with different design incidence angle are experimentally investigated in the wide range of operating flow rate. Three inducers L with the lowest design incidence angle, M with the moderate one and H with the largest one are used in combination with identical main impeller. As a result, the total head of pump with inducer H is confirmed to be the largest especially at large flow rates, while the shaft power is almost the same, resulting in the best efficiency with the inducer H. The suction performance is the best with inducer H at large flow rates and is the best with inducer L at low flow rates. Two kinds of instabilities, the cavitating whirling vortex and the surges are mainly observed for the all both inducers, but they are limited at low flow rates. The occurrence ranges of these instabilities in terms of the operating flow rate is the widest with inducer H. However, those in terms of the shockless flow rate ratio is similar for the all three inducers: This fact can contribute to establish some guideline to the pump operation avoiding serious flow instabilities.

[Purpose] We determined the effect of partial sleep deprivation (PSD) after an exercise session on exercise performance on the following morning. [Methods] Eleven male athletes performed either a normal sleep trial (CON) or a PSD trial. On the first day (day 1), all subjects performed an exercise session consisting of 90 min of running (at 75% VO<sub>2max</sub>) followed by 100 drop jumps. Maximal strength (MVC) was evaluated before and after exercise. In the CON trial, the sleep duration was 23:00-7:00, while in the PSD trial, the sleep duration was shortened to 40% of the regular sleep duration. On the following morning (day 2), MVC, the metabolic responses during 20 min of running (at 75% VO<sub>2max</sub>), and time to exhaustion (TTE) at 85% VO<sub>2max</sub> were evaluated. [Results] On day 2, neither the MVC nor VO<sub>2</sub> during 20 min of running differed significantly between the two trials. However, the respiratory exchange ratio was significantly lower in the PSD trial than in the CON trial (p = 0.01). Moreover, the TTE was significantly shorter in the PSD trial than in the CON trial (p = 0.01). [Conclusion] A single night of PSD after an exercise session significantly decreased endurance performance without significantly changing muscle strength or cardiopulmonary response.

We have succeeded in preparing single crystalline lms of BaFeO3, which may contain unusual Fe4+ ions, on (100) SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser beam deposition. The RHEED patterns for the lms on the (100) substrates apparently show a C4 symmetry, suggesting that the sample had a pseudo-cubic perovskite structure rather than hexagonal unit cell. The (100) epitaxially grown lms were found to be highly insulating, up to the leakage current density lower than 1 A/cm2 at the bias voltage of ..1:5 V. In addition, the lms showed a high value of dielectric constant of " = 59, and relatively small dissipation factor of about 0.07 at 100 kHz. The samples were also revealed to have a remanent magnetization at 300 K.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We have developed RNA-based quencher-free molecular aptamer beacons (RNA-based QF-MABs) for the detection of ATP, taking advantage of the conformational changes associated with ATP binding to the ATP-binding RNA aptamer. The RNA aptamer, with its well-defined structure, was readily converted to the fluorescence sensors by incorporating a fluorophore into the loop region of the hairpin structure. These RNA-based QF-MABs exhibited fluorescence signals in the presence of ATP relative to their low background signals in the absence of ATP. The fluorescence emission intensity increased upon formation of a RNA-based QF-MAB·ATP complex.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
Immediate Closed Reduction Technique for Cervical Spine Dislocations

Study Design: Retrospective study.Purpose: This research aimed to assess the clinical outcomes of patients with traumatic cervical spine dislocation who underwent closed reduction employing our approach.Overview of Literature: Bedside closed reduction is the quickest procedure for repairing traumatic cervical spine dislocations; nevertheless, it also possesses the risk of neurological deterioration.Methods: For closed reduction, the patient’s head was elevated on a motorized bed, the cervical spine was placed at the midline, traction of 10 kg was applied, the motorized bed was gradually returned to a flat position, the head was lifted off the bed, and the cervical spine was slowly adjusted to a flexed position. The weight of traction was elevated by 5-kg increments until the positional shift was attained. Subsequently, the bed was gradually tilted while traction was applied again to return the cervical spine to the midline position.Results: Of the 43 cases of cervical spine dislocation, closed reduction was carried out in 40 cases, of which 36 were successful. During repositioning, three patients experienced a temporary worsening of their neck pain and neurological symptoms that enhanced when the cervical spine was flexed. Closed reduction was conducted while the patient was awake; nevertheless, sedation was needed in three cases. Among the 24 patients whose pretreatment paralysis had been characterized by American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS) grades A–C, seven patients (29.2%) demonstrated an enhancement of two or more AIS grades at the last observation.Conclusions: Our closed reduction approach safely repaired traumatic cervical spine dislocations.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Under severe earthquake, lack of strength and ductility in the plastic hinge region of the reinforced concrete column raises serious concerns for overall structural safety. In the current study, experimental research was performed to improve the seismic strength and performance of reinforced concrete columns under cyclic load reversals. A new strengthening approach of reinforced concrete columns was introduced by applying High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Composites (HPFRC) sprayed mortar combined with additional reinforcing steel bars.</P> <P>For the practice of strengthening of old reinforced concrete columns, the surface of old concrete column section was treated and grooved in advance, later the longitudinal and/or transverse strengthening bars were placed in the groove of concrete surface, and finally the column section was increased by HPFRC sprayed mortar. As experimental variables such as the HPFRC sprayed mortar, use of additional transverse strengthening bars, and the use of additional longitudinal strengthening bars, the performance of the strengthened columns were compared with that of the conventional reinforced concrete column under reversed cyclic loads.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Seismic strengthening of concrete column was newly applied by HPFRC sprayed mortar. </LI> <LI> Damage of column plastic hinge was minimized by HPFRC and additional reinforcing bars. </LI> <LI> The crack width of concrete was controlled by multiple micro-cracks induced by HPFRC. </LI> <LI> The strengthened method could improve the hysteretic damping energy of the column. </LI> </UL> </P>
