      • Montreal as a Multicultural Urban Setting in Recent English-Language Fiction from Quebec (David Homel and Gail Scott)

        The cultural, political and territorial ambiance of Quebec after the Quiet revolution, since the 1970s has considerably changed. A new generation of writers have emerged on the literary scene who continue to write in English in the officially French province of Canada. My intention is to compare two representative city novels: David Homel’s Midway (2010), and Gail Scott’s The Obituary (2010). I focus on the different representations of the same phenomeon: Homel’s experience of “multiplicity” is in sharp contrast to Scott’s sceptical portrayal of the multicultural and multiethnic reality of Montreal. The novels testify that more realities exist in the city.This is unambigously manisfest in the city’s soundscape, a fully integrated part of urban space; therefore, the protagonists’ language awareness, their altering attitude towards the city’s cacophony is also under scrutiny in the paper. The characters are poistioned differently, and the authors employ different writing techinques, too. In one case it is more traditional and linear (Homel), and in the other case it is experimental, fragmentated (Scott). By drawing comparisons, I intend to show that it is possible to embrace the diversity that characterizes urban existence in Montreal in more than one way.

        Specific Response of Additively Manufactured AlSi9Cu3Fe Alloy to Precipitation Strengthening

        The additive manufacturing of Al–Si–Cu/Mg alloys along with their precipitation strengthening represents a promising optionof producing high-strength complex-shaped light-weight components for special applications in automotive or aerospace. Inthis paper, we follow our previous research on AlSi9Cu3Fe alloy prepared by one of the additive manufacturing technologies,selective laser melting (SLM). We characterize the precipitation strengthening of this material during conventional T6heat treatment, and also present the possibility of its precipitation strengthening by annealing at temperatures of 413–453 Kwithout previous solutionizing. We revealed the specific response of the studied material consisting in the simultaneousprecipitation of semi-coherent θ′ precipitates and Si platelets. By characterization of hardness, mechanical performance undertensile loading and microstructure, we demonstrate that the AlSi9Cu3Fe alloy is not stable when prepared by SLM and itsstability can be induced by additional heat treatment. The results of our work thus yield with a practical recommendationfor applications where temperature increase may occur.

        Measured and non-free vortex design results of axial flow fans

        The research is about the determination of developing flow pattern in the axial flow fan impeller. A measuring method and a sizing method of axial flow fans used in a research project have been studied. In this way it has been determined the spatial distribution of static pressure directly behind the impeller as well as the spatial distribution and direction of total pressure in a fixed system to the blade channel. There is an opportunity to identify the high loss region in the impeller: to determine the pressure loss and the hydraulic efficiency at each point. The article shows the results of comparison between the measurement data and the sizing results in the case of one in the agricultural-field utilized cooling fan. The impeller was designed by the help of the fore slanted blades in circumference direction as well as the non-free vortex theory. The basic theories of the design method of the blades and the realization of measurement results are analyzed, too.

        Inductive and combinatorial reasoning in international educational context: assessment, measurement invariance, and latent mean differences

        Indonesian 15-year-old students’ educational achievement has proved to be significantly lower than the international average based on one of the most prominent international large-scale assessments, OECD PISA. This prompted our interest in Indonesian students’ cognitive development during secondary schooling in comparison with that of students who are more successful on the PISA scale. This study aims to describe the development of Indonesian students’ thinking skills, especially inductive and combinatorial reasoning, to map the influencing factors in the development of reasoning skills and make a cross-national comparison study with their Hungarian peers. The sample was drawn from 250 Indonesian and 864 Hungarian 8th and 11th graders. The reliabilities of the tests were acceptable, with Cronbach’s alpha varying between .70 and .86. Results mainly indicated that: (a) the measures of these two constructs were partially invariant across nationalities; (b) the Indonesian students’ reasoning skills did not sufficiently develop between the 8th and 11th grades; (c) the Indonesian students’ inductive and combinatorial reasoning achievement was significantly worse than that of the Hungarian students in 11th grade, but not in 8th grade; and (d) the students’ learning strategies proved to be predictive factors in students’ reasoning skills achievement in both Indonesian and Hungarian contexts, but the level of prediction varied. Overall, the results of the current study provide support for an understanding of Indonesian students’ cognitive development compared to an international benchmark. The findings have implications for revising educational methods in Indonesia and may form the basis for further studies.

        Correction to: Response of wheat to combined application of nitrogen and phosphorus along with compost

        In order to achieve food security and increase crop productivity in a sustainable way; keeping soil fertile and balanced fertilization is vital. Soil fertility declining and unbalanced fertilization is one of the bottlenecks to sustainable agricultural production. To overcome these problems, a field experiment was conducted, with the aimed to explore the potential of organic and chemical nutrient sources with their optimal application and integration for sustainable wheat production. The experiment was conducted with twelve treatment combinations in a factorial approach with three replications, where one factor was the level of NP (Nitrogen and Phosphorus) fertilizer and the other compost, set in a randomized complete block design. The treatments were used four levels application of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer (NP) (0-0, 60-40, 90-70 and 120-100 kg/ha), three levels application of compost (0, 3 and 6 ton/ha). From the data collected and analyzed, results showed that there are significant differences among the compost application in all wheat yield and its component except harvest index. Application of 6 ton/ha compost was higher with plant height, spike length, number of seeds per spike, 1000 seeds weight, and biological yield. The sole application of NP (120-100 kg/ha) produced (6.19 ton/ha) grain yield whereas combined application of NP (120-100 kg/ha) along with compost (6 ton/ha) produced the higher grain yield (8.16 ton/ha). This clearly revealed that the combined application of NP and compost increase wheat yield by 27.45% over sole application of NP. The integrated application of organic and inorganic fertilizer increases the effectiveness of chemical fertilizer and enhances crop productivity.

Four levels of the N:P fertilizer (control, 27.6%:18.4%, 41.4%:32.2% and 55.2%:46%) were combined with three levels of compost (0, 3 ton/ha and 6 ton/ha), giving 12 treatments combination. From the data collected and analyzed, integrated application of the NP fertilizer and compost significantly increased soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, and available phosphorus but had no effect on soil pH and cation exchange capacity (CEC). Application of 6 ton/ha compost was higher with plant height, spike length, number of seeds per spike, 1000 seeds weight, and biological yield. The sole application of the NP (55.2%:46%) produced (6.19 ton/ha) grain yield whereas combined application of the NP (55.2%:46%) along with the compost (6 ton/ha) produced the higher grain yield (8.16 ton/ha). This clearly revealed that application of 75% recommended inorganic NP fertilizers combined with compost resulted in increased wheat yield by 27.45% over sole application of inorganic fertilizer indicated that the integrated approach could enable to save up to 25% of commercial fertilizers and increase the yield of wheat.

        A case study of gear wheel material and heat treatment effect on gearbox strength calculation

        The paper is focused on the influence of gearing material and thermal or chemical-thermal processing of wheels on the results of the strength calculation carried out in accordance to the standard, in particular on the safety factor. This effect is examined on a gearbox that was part of the steel coil production line in the integrated steel plant. Due to changes in production, the load on the gears increased. Thus, the result of this work is the selection of new materials for the two-speed gearbox and their heat treatment to meet the safety conditions of the gearing mechanism without changing the geometrical parameters of the gearbox.

        Does <i>Kepler</i> unveil the mystery of the Blazhko effect? First detection of period doubling in <i>Kepler</i> Blazhko RR Lyrae stars

        <P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P><P>The first detection of the period doubling phenomenon is reported in the <I>Kepler</I> RR Lyrae stars RR Lyr, V808 Cyg and V355 Lyr. Interestingly, all these pulsating stars show Blazhko modulation. The period doubling manifests itself as alternating maxima and minima of the pulsational cycles in the light curve, as well as through the appearance of half‐integer frequencies located halfway between the main pulsation period and its harmonics in the frequency spectrum. The effect was found to be stronger during certain phases of the modulation cycle. We were able to reproduce the period‐doubling bifurcation in our non‐linear RR Lyrae models computed by the Florida–Budapest hydrocode. This enabled us to trace the origin of this instability in RR Lyrae stars to a resonance, namely a 9:2 resonance between the fundamental mode and a high‐order (ninth) radial overtone showing strange‐mode characteristics. We discuss the connection of this new type of variation to the mysterious Blazhko effect and argue that it may give us fresh insights into solving this century‐old enigma.</P>

      • Repeatability and reproducibility of thermal field-flow fractionation in molecular weight determination of processed natural rubber

        <P>The purpose of this study is (1) to determine the repeatability and reproducibility of thermal field-flow fractionation (ThFFF) in measuring the molecular weight of compounded natural rubber, and (2) to examine the correlation between the molecular weights obtained from ThFFF and the rheological data. 8 batches of compounded natural rubber were obtained from a thermo-mechanical mastication process, and were analyzed by ThFFF in a designed testing sequence. ThFFF analysis showed the compounded natural rubbers range in weight-average molecular weight (<I>M</I><SUB>w</SUB>) from 143 000 to 360 000. By taking into account both the short term variability (repeatability) as well as the long term variability (reproducibility) of the instrument, ThFFF was shown to be able to distinguish between samples differing by as little as 21 000 in <I>M</I><SUB>w</SUB> and 15 600 in number-average molecular weight, <I>M</I><SUB>n</SUB> (based on <I>cis</I>-polyisoprene calibration); and thus is a useful tool for the molecular weight analysis of natural rubber-related materials.       • Novel graphene/Sn and graphene/SnO<sub>x</sub> hybrid nanostructures: Induced superconductivity and band gaps revealed by scanning probe measurements

        <P>The development of functional composite nanomaterials based on graphene and metal nanoparticles (NPs) is currently the subject of intense research interest. In this study we report the preparation of novel type of graphene/Sn and graphene/SnOx (1 <= x <= 2) hybrid nanostructures and their investigation by scanning probe methods. First, we prepare Sn NPs by evaporating 7-8 nm tin on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite substrates. Graphene/Sn nanostructures are obtained by transferring graphene on top of the tin NPs immediately after evaporation. We show by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) that tin NPs reduce significantly the environmental p-type doping of graphene. Furthermore, we demonstrate by low-temperature STM and STS measurements that superconductivity is induced in graphene, either directly supported by Sn NPs or suspended between them. Additionally, we prepare SnOx NPs by annealing the evaporated tin at 500 degrees C. STS measurements performed on hybrid graphene/SnOx nanostructures reveal the electronic band gap of SnOx NPs.
