      • Color Features of the Waterscape Drawing and Drawer’s Mental Image of the Water

        Following Miyake, Takahashi, and Mori (2016), relationship between image features of the waterscape drawing and drawer’s personality was investigated. A hundred and thirty-two university students drew a picture per an instruction ‘please draw freely a scene with water.’ They also answered the semantic differential scales asking his/her mental image of the water. Pictures were scanned into digital image, and the color feature indices (Ave-L*, Ave-C*, Ave-h, and Hue-ENT) were calculated for the full image (whole picture) and for the water image (only water-depicted area). Mental image data was subjected to a factor analysis and four factors were obtained; purity, capacity, vitality, and violence. Then the correlation analysis between the mental image of the water and the color feature indices was conducted. As the results, in male participants, positive correlation was found between vitality and Hue-ENT of both the full image and the water image. Also, capacity correlated negatively with Ave-L* of the full image, suggesting that males who have a kind of ‘maternal image’ toward the water tended to draw dark picture. In female participants, vitality correlated positively with Ave-L* of the full image, suggesting that females who think water joyful and alive tended to draw light picture, or remain white face of the paper uncolored. These results were discussed in light of possible sex difference of the mental image of the water.

      • Regeneration of Plantlets from petiole callus of wild viola (Viola patrinii DC.)

        Plantlets were regenerated from 5-year subcultured compact callus derived from petiole tissues of wild viola (Viola patrinii DC.) but not from 5-year subcultured friable callus. Regeneration occurred most efficiently on medium that contained two-fold diluted basal salts of Murashige and Skoog's (MS) medium, 5×10-6M 1-naphthaleneacetic acid and ?? M kinetin. The effect of dilution of MS basal salts could also be achieved solely by two-fold dilution of the potassium dihydrogen phosphate in the mixture. The present study revealed that dilution of MS basal salts, in particular of potassium dihydrogen phosphate, was important for the regeneration of wild viola. Moreover, although the callus had been subcultured for 5 years, regeneration of plantlets from callus was still possible. In addition, scanning electron microscopy revealed that details of the process of plant regeneration from subcultured callus varied with the age and source of callus and differed from that reported in rice.

      • A POSSIBLE BINARY SYSTEM OF A STELLAR REMNANT IN THE HIGH-MAGNIFICATION GRAVITATIONAL MICROLENSING EVENT OGLE-2007-BLG-514

        <P>We report the extremely high-magnification (A > 1000) binary microlensing event OGLE-2007-BLG-514. We obtained good coverage around the double peak structure in the light curve via follow-up observations from different observatories. The binary lens model that includes the effects of parallax (known orbital motion of the Earth) and orbital motion of the lens yields a binary lens mass ratio of q = 0.321 +/- 0.007 and a projected separation of s = 0.072 +/- 0.001 in units of the Einstein radius. The parallax parameters allow us to determine the lens distance D-L = 3.11 +/- 0.39 kpc and total mass M-L = 1.40 +/- 0.18 M-circle dot; this leads to the primary and secondary components having masses of M-1 = 1.06 +/- 0.13 M-circle dot and M-2 = 0.34 +/- 0.04 M-circle dot, respectively. The parallax model indicates that the binary lens system is likely constructed by the main-sequence stars. On the other hand, we used a Bayesian analysis to estimate probability distributions by the model that includes the effects of xallarap (possible orbital motion of the source around a companion) and parallax (q = 0.270 +/- 0.005, s = 0.083 +/- 0.001). The primary component of the binary lens is relatively massive, with M-1 = 0.9(-0.3)(+4.6) M-circle dot and it is at a distance of D-L = 2.6(-0.9)(+3.8) kpc. Given the secure mass ratio measurement, the companion mass is therefore M-2 = 0.2(-0.1)(+1.2) M-circle dot. The xallarap model implies that the primary lens is likely a stellar remnant, such as a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.</P>

      • A SUB-SATURN MASS PLANET, MOA-2009-BLG-319Lb

        <P>We report the gravitational microlensing discovery of a sub-Saturn mass planet, MOA-2009-BLG-319Lb, orbiting a K-or M-dwarf star in the inner Galactic disk or Galactic bulge. The high-cadence observations of the MOA-II survey discovered this microlensing event and enabled its identification as a high-magnification event approximately 24 hr prior to peak magnification. As a result, the planetary signal at the peak of this light curve was observed by 20 different telescopes, which is the largest number of telescopes to contribute to a planetary discovery to date. The microlensing model for this event indicates a planet-star mass ratio of q = (3.95 +/- 0.02) x 10(-4) and a separation of d = 0.97537 +/- 0.00007 in units of the Einstein radius. A Bayesian analysis based on the measured Einstein radius crossing time, t(E), and angular Einstein radius,theta(E), along with a standard Galactic model indicates a host star mass of M-L = 0.38(-0.18)(+0.34) M-circle dot and a planet mass of M-p = 50(-24)(+44)M(circle plus), which is half the mass of Saturn. This analysis also yields a planet-star three-dimensional separation of a = 2.4(-0.6)(+1.2) AU and a distance to the planetary system of D-L = 6.1(-1.2)(+1.1) kpc. This separation is similar to 2 times the distance of the snow line, a separation similar to most of the other planets discovered by microlensing.</P>

        Biallelic Mutations in Nuclear Pore Complex Subunit NUP107 Cause Early-Childhood-Onset Steroid-Resistant Nephrotic Syndrome

        The nuclear pore complex (NPC) is a huge protein complex embedded in the nuclear envelope. It has central functions in nucleocytoplasmic transport, nuclear framework, and gene regulation. Nucleoporin 107 kDa (NUP107) is a component of the NPC central scaffold and is an essential protein in all eukaryotic cells. Here, we report on biallelic NUP107 mutations in nine affected individuals who are from five unrelated families and show early-onset steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS). These individuals have pathologically focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a condition that leads to end-stage renal disease with high frequency. NUP107 is ubiquitously expressed, including in glomerular podocytes. Three of four NUP107 mutations detected in the affected individuals hamper NUP107 binding to NUP133 (nucleoporin 133 kDa) and NUP107 incorporation into NPCs in vitro. Zebrafish with nup107 knockdown generated by morpholino oligonucleotides displayed hypoplastic glomerulus structures and abnormal podocyte foot processes, thereby mimicking the pathological changes seen in the kidneys of the SRNS individuals with NUP107 mutations. Considering the unique properties of the podocyte (highly differentiated foot-process architecture and slit membrane and the inability to regenerate), we propose a ''podocyte-injury model'' as the pathomechanism for SRNS due to biallelic NUP107 mutations.

        Glycemic Control Is Associated with Histological Findings of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

        Background: Poor lifestyle habits may worsen nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), with progression to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and cirrhosis. This study investigated the association between glycemic control status and hepatic histological findings to elucidate the effect of glycemic control on NAFLD.Methods: This observational study included 331 patients diagnosed with NAFLD by liver biopsy. Effects of the glycemic control status on histological findings of NAFLD were evaluated by comparing the following four glycemic status groups defined by the glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level at the time of NAFLD diagnosis: ≤5.4%, 5.5%–6.4%, 6.5%–7.4%, and ≥7.5%.Results: Compared with the lowest HbA1c group (≤5.4%), the higher HbA1c groups (5.5%–6.4%, 6.5%–7.4%, and ≥7.5%) were associated with advanced liver fibrosis and high NAFLD activity score (NAS). On multivariate analysis, an HbA1c level of 6.5%– 7.4% group was significantly associated with advanced fibrosis compared with the lowest HbA1c group after adjusting for age, sex, hemoglobin, alanine aminotransferase, and creatinine levels. When further controlling for body mass index and uric acid, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, the higher HbA1c groups were significantly associated with advanced fibrosis compared with the lowest HbA1c group. On the other hand, compared with the lowest HbA1c group, the higher HbA1c groups were also associated with a high NAS in both multivariate analyses.Conclusion: Glycemic control is associated with NAFLD exacerbation, with even a mild deterioration in glycemic control, especially a HbA1c level of 6.5%–7.4%, contributing to NAFLD progression.

        History, ethnicity, and policy analysis of organic farming in Japan: when “nature” was detached from organic

        The ratio of organic farming in Japan stagnated in terms of area and involved farmers despite the richness in history symbolized in terms such as the Fukuoka methods or the more recent Teikei. This paper first reviews the historical development of Japan’s organic agriculture from the 1930s (first epoch), regarding Japanese ethnicity and its roots and relationships to nature. Based on this analysis, we critically evaluate policy development from the 1990s (second epoch). Here, we provide potential explanation for the low ratio of organic agriculture in Japan. By combing the conceptual analysis of ethnicity and organic movements, the underpinning factors that underlie the development of organic farming are analyzed both from historical and cultural contexts. Natural farming is a separate individual practice in Japan, with its own philosophical backgrounds. This initial 1930s terminology of “natural farming” or shizen nōhō (自然農法) was translated into yūki nōgyō (有機農業) in the 1970s. This review claims that the meaning of organic agriculture got too narrow to promote organic agriculture with the governmental intervention and standardization from the 1990s. The initial phase of yūki nōgyō also had such a problem as the concept became increasingly institutionalized through government standardization and policy from the 1990s. Currently, at the conceptual level, the linkage to nature, i.e., “shizen,” is confined into “non-use of chemical components” through formal institutionalization, and the ethnic elements or philosophical and historical roots are neglected. Similar phenomena of “commodification of organic farming” are widely known in matured markets in the USA and Europe, but the discrepancy of “nature” and “organic” agriculture is particularly also observed in contemporary Japan.
