A Pilot Case Study of an OPIc Test Oriented Class

This study was conducted as a pilot case study to investigate whether providing a recording assignment as a formative assessment helps L2 adult learners in improving their OPIc (Oral Proficiency Interview-Computer) grades. The class observed in the study was a four week (six hrs./w) intensive course with eight participants working for one of major corporations in Korea. The participants took the class on site with financial support by the company. After every lesson, they were asked to submit an answer for an OPIc question by recording the answer using their smart phones. The improvement was measured by comparing the pre-test grade of OPIc to the post-test grade of OPIc. Half of the learners completed the assignment and three of them showed one or two levels improvement while those who failed to complete the assignment showed no improvement including the two who were not able to report the post test. The results of the study was interpreted and some suggestions for the future research are offered with conclusions.
Analyzing Co-occurring Errors of Adult L2 Learners in Speaking and Writing PDTs

This study was conducted to determine whether South Korean L2 adult learners’ errors in speaking and writing co occur. It also focused on answering whether Picture Description Task (PDT) can elicit enough language production to analyze errors in both speaking and writing. Eleven university students participated in the study completing ten paired sets of PDTs. The order of speaking and writing tasks was switched and different pictures were used throughout every set of PDT. The most common errors found in speaking and writing PDTs were the use of determiners, verbs, and prepositions respectively. The speaking errors outnumbered writing errors but the types of errors in speaking and writing appeared very similar along with the smaller language features of each category. This confirmed that whether it is speaking or writing, determiners, verbs, and prepositions are the three most common areas where L2 learners commit errors. The participants showed low level of confidence in speaking and more errors were made whenever a speaking description was given first. This suggests in PDTs teachers can lower learners’ L2 anxiety by presenting writing tasks first. PDTs practically activated L2 productions and made the comparison between speaking and writing outputs possible.

<P><I>Apios americana</I> is an important food crop producing edible tubers with high nutritional and medicinal values and is widely cultivated in many countries. Despite its usefulness, research on its secondary metabolites and biological activities has been limited. In the present study, a new coumaronochromone, (2<I>R</I>,3<I>S</I>)-3,7,4′-trihydroxy-5-methoxycoumaronochromone (<B>1</B>), and two new isoflavone glucosides, 7,2′,4′-trihydroxy-5-methoxyisoflavone-4′-<I>O</I>-β-<SMALL>D</SMALL>-glucopyranoside (<B>3</B>) and 5,7,4′-trihydroxyisoflavone-7-<I>O</I>-β-<SMALL>D</SMALL>-gentiotrioside (<B>5</B>), were isolated from the tubers of <I>A. americana</I> via chromatographic separation. Seventeen known compounds (<B>2</B>, <B>4</B>, and <B>6</B>-<B>20</B>) were also obtained from this plant part. The chemical structures of <B>1</B>, <B>3</B>, and <B>5</B> were determined by the interpretation of spectroscopic data. The absolute structure of the new compound <B>1</B> was established from experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism spectra. This is the first study to determine the absolute configuration of a 3-hydroxycoumaronochromone derivative. The potential anti-inflammatory activity of the 20 isolates obtained was evaluated by measuring their inhibitory effects on nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Among the isolates, seven compounds (<B>1</B>, <B>3</B>, <B>6</B>-<B>8</B>, <B>15</B>, and <B>20</B>) showed substantial inhibition of nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 cells, with the most active being compound <B>1</B> (IC<SUB>50</SUB> value of 0.38 ± 0.04 μM).</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
Averaged head phantoms from magnetic resonance images of Korean children and young adults

<P>Increased use of mobile phones raises concerns about the health risks of electromagnetic radiation. Phantom heads are routinely used for radiofrequency dosimetry simulations, and the purpose of this study was to construct averaged phantom heads for children and young adults. Using magnetic resonance images (MRI), sectioned cadaver images, and a hybrid approach, we initially built template phantoms representing 6-, 9-, 12-, 15-year-old children and young adults. Our subsequent approach revised the template phantoms using 29 averaged items that were identified by averaging the MRI data from 500 children and young adults. In females, the brain size and cranium thickness peaked in the early teens and then decreased. This is contrary to what was observed in males, where brain size and cranium thicknesses either plateaued or grew continuously. The overall shape of brains was spherical in children and became ellipsoidal by adulthood. In this study, we devised a method to build averaged phantom heads by constructing surface and voxel models. The surface model could be used for phantom manipulation, whereas the voxel model could be used for compliance test of specific absorption rate (SAR) for users of mobile phones or other electronic devices.</P>

Previously, we identified that Cirsium japonicum (CJ) extract posses antidepressant properties. In order to look for the optimal hebal preparation, CJ extracts collected from Koheung, Yesan, Cheju, Pyungchang and Pocheon were compared. The psychopharmacological activities of each extract were investigated using the open field test, the rota-rod test and the forced swimming test. Effect of each extract on Cl- influx in neuroblastoma cells were also identified. All of the extracts were orally administered at dosages of 50, 100, 200, 400 mg/kg of body weight. Supplementation of CJ did not significantly alter psychomotor behaviors such as movement, rearing frequency and total turn angle on the open field. Supplementation of CJ’s extract from Pyungchang (100 mg/kg, p.o.), Cheju (200 and 400 mg/kg p.o.) and Yesan (100 and 200 mg/kg, p.o.) significantly decreased immobile duration and increased mobile duration in the forced swimming test. All of extracts have no influence on NE uptake in HEK-293 cells, but increased Cl- influx in neuroblastoma cell. The extract from Yesan demonstrated the most potent effect on Cl- influx. These results indicate that CJ’s extracts from Pyungchang, Cheju and Yesan may alleviate depression, and the extract from Yesan may be the most effective preparation.
Interaction between Neuronal Depolarization and MK-801 in SH-SY5Y Cells and the Rat Cortex

Objective: The interaction between MK-801, a model of psychosis and KCl-induced depolarization or electroconvulsive shock (ECS), a therapeutic model of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), was investigated in SH-SY5Y cells and the rat frontal cortex. Methods: SH-SY5Y cells were pretreated with 1 μM MK-801 for 15 min, followed by cotreatment with 100 mM KCl for 5 min. MK-801 was reintroduced after the KCl was washed out, and the samples were incubated before harvesting. For the experiments in rats, male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with MK-801 followed by ECS. Immunoblot analyses of glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) (Ser9), AKT (Ser473) and extracellular legulated kinase (ERK)1/2 in SH-SY5Y cells and the rat frontal cortex were performed. Results: KCl-induced neuronal depolarization resulted in the transient dephosphorylation of AKT (Ser473) and GSK3β (Ser9), followed by increased phosphorylation of the enzymes in SH-SY5Y cells. Cotreatment with MK-801 and KCl inhibited the initial dephosphorylation of AKT and GSK3β produced by KCl-induced neuronal depolarization. Similarly, ECS resulted in the transient dephosphorylation of AKT (Ser473) and GSK3β (Ser9), whereas cotreatment with MK-801 inhibited the initial dephosphorylation of AKT (Ser473) and GSK3β (Ser9) produced by ECS in the rat frontal cortex. No significant interaction was observed between MK-801 and KCl in the dephosphorylation of ERK1/2. Conclusion: These results suggest that an antagonistic interplay between MK-801 and neuronal depolarization by KCl or ECS is involved the regulation of AKT (Ser473) and GSK3β (Ser9) phosphorylation.
