In this paper, the composition of lead glass was studied to lower the melting temperature. The composition of lead glass was silica, lead monoxide, sodium hydroxide, and other metal oxides which were blended in alkaline aqueous solution. The blend was dried and melted to produce transparent glass material. Using the composition suggested in this paper, it was possible to manufacture transparent lead glass easily at 700~900 ℃. And the dried bled material had very low softening temperature around 200℃ which can be applied in inorganic adhesives.

In this paper, the foaming method of polymer concrete was studied. The pre-composition of polymer concrete consisted of unsaturated polyester as a binder material 15∼50wt%, sand 0∼80 wt%, filler 5-50 wt%, and foaming agent 0.1∼1.5 wt%. The pre-composition was heated at 100∼200℃ for 30∼120 minutes, which thermal treatment caused hardening of unsaturated polyester and cracking of foaming agent. The foamed polymer concrete showed low thermal transfer coefficent together with good mechanical properties.

The main purpose of fusion fuel supply system is to store and supply hydrogen isotopes needed for operation of ITER and to provide the necessary infrastructure for short and long term storage of large amount of hydrogen isotopes. The storage of tritium as metal tritide on hydride forming metals or intermetallic compounds is recognized as the most reliable and safe method. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of several hydrogen isotope getter materials, the authors suggest the use of ZrCo on the basis of its ideal P-T-C characteristics and its non pyrophoricity. The authors also suggest the hydrogen isotope storage beds design appropriate to the fusion fuel supply system.

Screening for lower extremity peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is essential in assessing a patient’s risk of cerebrovascular disorders. The ankle-brachial index (ABI) is widely used as a screening tool for PAD, but it can produce falsely normalized results due to factors like artery calcification and collateral vessels. We report a patient with normal ABI but confirmed lower extremity PAD through ultrasound and computed tomography (CT). This case shows the limitation of ABI for PAD diagnosis. Additional tests, such as CT or ultrasound, should be considered when PAD is suspected, even if the ABI is normal.
Correlation Between Elevated Lipoprotein(a) and Carotid Plaque in Asymptomatic Individuals

Background: Carotid plaque formation is a major global health issue and contributes in pathogenesis of vascular diseases. Lipoprotein(a), similar to low-density lipoprotein, may influence atherogenesis by promoting inflammation and thrombosis. However, the association between lipoprotein(a) levels and presence of carotid plaques has been debated. This study investigated the correlation between these parameters. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 4,896 individuals who underwent lipoprotein(a) measurement and carotid ultrasonography at Gangnam Severance Hospital between January 2017 and December 2022. The relationship between lipoprotein(a) levels and the presence of carotid plaques was evaluated using logistic regression analysis adjusted for factors such as age, sex, hypertension (HTN), dyslipidemia, and diabetes mellitus (DM). Results: Among the 4,896 enrolled participants, those with carotid plaques were older, more likely to be men, and had a higher prevalence of HTN, DM, and dyslipidemia. The analysis showed a significant association between the presence of carotid plaques and a level of lipoprotein(a) ≥50 mg/dL in both univariable (unadjusted odds ratio= 1.508, p<0.001, 95% confidence interval: 1.192–1.907) and multivariable (adjusted odds ratio=1.335, p=0.029, 95% confidence interval: 1.030–1.731) models. Conclusion: Elevated lipoprotein(a) level emerged as an independent risk factor for carotid plaque formation, emphasizing the need for integrated risk assessment. Targeting lipoprotein(a) could enhance preventive strategies against cerebrovascular events. Therefore, further research is warranted to elucidate this disease’s underlying mechanisms and evaluate therapeutic interventions.

Objective: Cyber addiction, which is more vulnerable in adolescents, is defined as the excessive use of computers and the Internet that causes serious psychological, social, and physical problems. In this study, we investigated the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in adolescents with cyber addiction. Methods: We collected and analyzed resting-state functional neuroimaging data of 20 patients with cyber addiction, aged 13−18 years, and 27 healthy controls. Based on previous studies, the seed regions included the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, medial orbitofrontal cortex, lateral orbitofrontal cortex, dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, insula, hippocampus, amygdala, nucleus accumbens, and the ventral tegmental area. Seed-to-voxel analyses were performed to investigate the differences between patients and healthy controls. A correlation analysis between rsFC and cyber addiction severity was also performed. Results: Patients with cyber addiction showed the following characteristics: increased positive rsFC between the left insular−right middle temporal gyrus; increased positive rsFC between the right hippocampus−right precentral gyrus; increased positive rsFC between the right amygdala−right precentral gyrus and right parietal operculum cortex; increased negative rsFC between the left nucleus accumbens−right cerebellum crus II and right cerebellum VI. Conclusion: Adolescents with cyber addiction show altered functional connectivity during the resting state. The findings of this study may help us better understand the neuropathology of cyber addiction in adolescents.

<P>Lee et al. find that phospholipase D2 deficiency increases survival and decreases organ damage during experimental sepsis in mice which could be reversed with a CXCR2 antagonist. Thus, targeting PLD2 may offer therapeutics for septic patients.</P><P>We determined the function of phospholipase D2 (PLD2) in host defense in highly lethal mouse models of sepsis using PLD2<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice and a PLD2-specific inhibitor. PLD2 deficiency not only increases survival but also decreases vital organ damage during experimental sepsis. Production of several inflammatory cytokines (TNF, IL-1β, IL-17, and IL-23) and the chemokine CXCL1, as well as cellular apoptosis in immune tissues, kidney, and liver, are markedly decreased in PLD2<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice. Bactericidal activity is significantly increased in PLD2<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice, which is mediated by increased neutrophil extracellular trap formation and citrullination of histone 3 through peptidylarginine deiminase activation. Recruitment of neutrophils to the lung is markedly increased in PLD2<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice. Furthermore, LPS-induced induction of G protein–coupled receptor kinase 2 (GRK2) and down-regulation of CXCR2 are markedly attenuated in PLD2<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice. A CXCR2-selective antagonist abolishes the protection conferred by PLD2 deficiency during experimental sepsis, suggesting that enhanced CXCR2 expression, likely driven by GRK2 down-regulation in neutrophils, promotes survival in PLD2<SUP>−/−</SUP> mice. Furthermore, adoptively transferred PLD2<SUP>−/−</SUP> neutrophils significantly protect WT recipients against sepsis-induced death compared with transferred WT neutrophils. We suggest that PLD2 in neutrophils is essential for the pathogenesis of experimental sepsis and that pharmaceutical agents that target PLD2 may prove beneficial for septic patients.</P>
