Children’s Mental Health in the Area Affected by the Hebei Spirit Oil Spill Accident

Objectives Children are one of the most vulnerable populations to the impact of disasters. We aimed to examine children’s mental health in the area affected by the Hebei Spirit oil spill accident on December 7, 2007. Methods A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted using the Korean versions of the Children’s Depression Inventory and State Anxiety Inventory for Children on 1,362 children attending elementary schools in the affected area. The information on distances between the nearest contaminated coastline to the child’s residential house or attending school were obtained using a web-based map by inputting two address points. The symptom risks of depression and state anxiety were estimated by multiple logistic regression analyses adjusted for age, gender, and other covariates. Results Children with the closest distance (in the fourth quartile) to the school from the contaminated coastline showed a significantly higher symptom risk of depression compared to those with the farthest distance (first quartile)(odds ratio, 2.73; 95% confidence interval, 1.40-5.33), while there was no significant association between anxiety symptoms and distance. Conclusions Children, a vulnerable population for mental health impact by the oil spill accident, should be included in mental health programs in the community along with their family as victims of the disaster.
Health effects from exposure to dental diagnostic X-ray

The purpose of this review is to summarize the results of studies on of the association between exposure to dental X-rays and health risk. To perform the systematic review, We searched the PUBMED, EMBASE, and MEDLINE databases for papers published before December 15, 2016. A total of 2 158 studies, excluding duplicate studies, were found. Two reviewers independently evaluated the eligibility of each study. The final 21 studies were selected after application of exclusion criteria. In terms of health outcomes, there were 10 studies about brain tumors, 5 about thyroid cancer, 3 about tumors of head and neck areas, and 3 related to systemic health. In brain tumor studies, the association between dental X-ray exposure and meningioma was statistically significant in 5 of the 7 studies. In 4 of the 5 thyroid-related studies, there was a significant correlation with dental diagnostic X-rays. In studies on head and neck areas, tumors included laryngeal, parotid gland, and salivary gland cancers. There was also a statistically significant correlation between full-mouth X-rays and salivary gland cancer, but not parotid gland cancer. Health outcomes such as leukemia, low birth weight, cataracts, and thumb carcinomas were also reported. In a few studies examining health effects related to dental X-ray exposure, possibly increased risks of meningioma and thyroid cancer were suggested. More studies with a large population and prospective design are needed to elaborate these associations further.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The conventional coffee roasting process includes roasting, grinding and extraction. Current study developed reversed coffee roasting process: grinding first before proceeding onto the roasting process. The physicochemical properties and volatile compound analysis were conducted on coffee prepared with conventional and reversed coffee roasting process. Two coffee samples, including coffee powder roasted with conventional process (C, control), and coffee powder prepared by reversed method of grinding and roasting (R. reversed). The L* value of commercial coffee was used as an index of roasting time and temperature. The particle size of R was significantly lower than that of C (p<0.05) by 21.0%, respectively. The amount of trigonelline in C (264.23μg/g) was significantly lower than R (p<0.05). Other characteristics including L* value, moisture content, and pHs were not significant different between two coffee samples (p>0.05). The volatile flavor compound profiles of two samples were slightly different, indicating potential flavor differences.</P> <P><B>Industrial relevance</B></P> <P>This study demonstrated new coffee roasting process, which is different from conventional coffee roasting process. Finding from current study suggest using the reversed coffee roasting process for commercial usage in coffee roasting process.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> New method of coffee roasting process was proposed. </LI> <LI> Coffee powder from new roasting method provides finer coffee powder. </LI> <LI> Newly developed method can increase the trigonelline content in the roasted coffee. </LI> <LI> Volatile compound profile was different between coffee prepared by different method. </LI> </UL> </P>

Post-transplantation lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is a serious complication that can develop after either solid organ or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The incidence of Hodgkin`s lymphoma (HL) ranges from 0.5-1.0% of PTLD after HSCT without T-cell depletion. Here, we report a case of HL-PTLD that occurred after autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation for an angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL). A 36-year-old patient developed fever and chills with multiple lymphadenopathies at day 673 after auto-HSCT for AITL. Three months after the transplant, the patient developed fever with elevated plasma Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-PCR values. The excisional biopsy revealed HL at Ann Arbor stage IIIB. A total of 8 cycles of chemotherapy with ABVD please define were performed, and the patient has remained disease-free. To our knowledge, this is first case report of HL-PTLD after auto-PBSCT in Korea. (Korean J Med 2014;86:774-780)
