Control of mixing and transport processes are the key areas that can be benefited by understanding the hydrodynamics in gas-liquid two-phase flows. In particular, the enhanced bubble-induced liquid-phase mixing is known to be a function of void fraction distribution, gas phase velocity and so on. To further our insight on the characteristics of the liquid-phase mixing induced by the bubbles, in the present study, we experimentally investigate the mixing performance of a rectangular bubble column while changing the void fraction from 0.006 to 0.075%. A shadowgraphy technique is used to measure the gas-phase properties such as void fraction and size/velocity of bubbles. On the other hand, we use dye visualization with low diffusive buoyant dye to directly measure the level of mixing. Finally, we confirm that the time taken for full mixing scales with the inverse of volume void fraction.
CO2 Emission, Energy Consumption and Economic Development: A Case of Bangladesh
Md. Zahidul Islam,Zaima Ahmed,Md. Khaled Saifullah,Syed Nayeemul Huda,Shamil M. Al-Islam 한국유통과학회 2017 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.4 No.4
Environmental awareness and its relation to the development of economy has garnered increased attention in recent years. Researchers, over the years, have argued that sustainable development warrants for minimizing environmental degradation since one depends on the other. This study analyzes the relationship between environmental degradation (carbon emission taken as proxy for degradation), economic growth, total energy consumption and industrial production index growth in Bangladesh from year 1998 to 2013. This study uses Vector Autoregression (VAR) Model and variance decomposition of VAR to analyze the effect of these variables on carbon emission and vice-versa. The findings of VAR model suggest that industrial production and GDP per capita has significant relationship with carbon emission. Further analysis through variance decomposition shows carbon emission has consistent impact on industrial production over time, whereas, industrial production has high impact on emission in the short run which fades in the long run which is consistent with Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis. Carbon emission rising along with GDP per capita and at the same time having low impact in the long run on industrial index indicates there may be other sources of pollution introduced with the rise in income of the economy over time.
Shape based Moving Object Tracking with Particle Filter
Md. Zahidul Islam,Chil-Woo Lee 제어로봇시스템학회 2008 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2008 No.10
In this paper, we depict a new approach for moving object tracking with particle filter by shape information. The shape similarity between a template and estimated regions in the video scene is measured by their normalized cross-correlation of distance transformed image. Our observation system of particle filter is based on shape from distance transformed edge features. Template is created instantly by selecting any object from the video scene by a rectangle. Experimental results have been presented to show the effectiveness of our proposed system.

In this paper we describe an approach for template based detection and tracking of objects by chamfer matching in real time video. Detecting and tracking of any objects is the key problem in computer vision. In our case we try for hand and head of human for detection and tracking by chamfer matching technique. Matching involves correlating the templates with the distance transformed scene and determining the locations where the mismatch is below a certain user defined threshold.

Mixing and transport processes are the key issues in studying two-phase bubbly flow in a bubble column. Especially, the bubble-induced liquid phase mixing is a complex function of void fraction distribution, gas phase velocity and so on. To study the characteristics of the mixing induced by the bubbles, we have designed a rectangular bubble column where the mean void fractions ranging from 0.006 to 0.075%. High-speed shadowgraphy technique is used to measure the different gas phase properties such as bubble size, void fraction, and bubble velocity. To measure the mixing, on the other hand, we have used a direct visualization method with low diffusive buoyant dye. The results reveal both quantitative and qualitative measurements of the mixing characteristics depending on bubble column hydrodynamics.

This paper examines the long-run relationship between stock market indices in Bangladesh using exchange rate (ER), domestic credit provided by banks (DCB), industrial production index (IPI), and crude oil price (COP) in the presence of structural breaks. The study used time series data from 2009 to 2017 and applied ARDL bounds testing approach. Both conventional unit root and unit root tests in the presence of structural breakpoints are conducted. ARDL bounds testing approach confirms the presence of a long-run relationship among the selected variables and the stock market crash of 2010 and oil price shock of 2011 are found to have a significant effect on the stock price fluctuations in both stock exchanges in Bangladesh. The error correction term suggests that 43.3% of the disequilibrium in Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) returns is adjusted monthly to get back to the long-run equilibrium, whereas the value is 34.9% for Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE). Moreover, ER, DCB, and COP have a significant positive impact on stock prices for both stock exchanges. The policy guideline of this study is that the regulators in foreign exchange market, banking sector, and capital market should work together to make prudential regulatory framework with a view to transforming both stock exchanges into a robust one within the South Asian region.

Background: In this study, we hypothesized that microcystic, elongated, fragmented (MELF)-pattern, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression by cancer cells and microvessel density of cancer stroma may be associated with progression of endometrioid adenocarcinoma. Methods: The study used data from the Belarus Cancer Registry and archival histological material of 100 patients with retrospectively known good (survival) and poor (disease progression and death) outcomes. All cases were immunohistochemically stained for CD34 and VEGF. Two independent samples were compared for the characteristics of signs, and obtained results were analyzed by receiver operating characteristic analysis, Mann-Whitney U test, χ2 test (Yates correction), and Mantel-Cox test. Multivariate Cox hazard analysis and Spearman correlation test were used. A p-value of less than .05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The observed survival rate of patients with endometrioid adenocarcinoma was significantly lower (p = .002) in MELF-pattern positive patients when compared with MELF-pattern negative patients. The overall survival rate of patients whose tumors had more than 114 vessels/mm2 of tissue was significantly low (p < .001). Interestingly, a similar observation was found in patients with increased vessel area, evidenced by VEGF expression in the glandular tumor component. Conclusions: Our study suggests, for the first time, that these criteria may be used as risk factors of endometrioid adenocarcinoma progression during 5 years after radical surgical treatment. However, a large independent cohort of samples should be considered in the future to validate our findings.
