In-vivo antiproliferative activity of Morus latifolia leaf and bark extracts against Ehrlich’s ascites carcinoma

        Md. Shihabul Islam,Chowdhury Arif Jahangir,Md. Sifat Rahi,Md. Mahmudul Hasan,Salek Ahmed Sajib,Kazi Md. Faisal Hoque,Md Abu Reza 한국독성학회 2020 Toxicological Research Vol.36 No.1

Cancer is the second death causing disease all over the world and until today 100 different types of cancer have been identified whose treatment methods consist of serious side effects on human body. To reduce the frequency of adverse effects of cancer treatment, nowadays plant derived natural components are getting priority. The plant Morus latifolia is widely available in northern part of Bangladesh. The earlier researches suggested that popular varieties of some Morus sp. like Morus alba, Morus indica etc. have good anti-proliferative activity. Hence, this study was designed to evaluate the anti-proliferative activity of leaf and bark extracts of M. latifolia against Ehrlich’s ascites carcinoma (EAC) in vivo. The leaf and bark extracts of M. latifolia were used in several bioassays including Brine shrimp lethality test, hemagglutination activity test, antioxidant activity test, and cell growth inhibition test. Besides, fluorescence microscopy was performed to study apoptotic features in EAC cells, and molecular analysis like real-time PCR were also conducted. The results of Brine shrimp lethality test, hemagglutination activity test, and antioxidant activity assay supported the cell growth inhibition capability of leaf and bark extracts which was confirmed by in vivo cell growth inhibition bioassay. Moreover, the experimental extracts were able to induce cell apoptotis through altering the expression pattern of Bcl-2 and Bax genes. All of the results of this study suggest that several noble compounds are present in M. latifolia plant extracts which are capable for healing cancer cells.

Economic and non-economic loss and damage to climate change: evidence from a developing country shrimp farms to cyclone Bulbul

Islam, Md. Monirul,Nipa, Tanjila Akter,Islam, Md. Sofiqul,Hasan, Mahmudul,Khan, Makidul Islam The Korean Society of Fisheries and Aquatic Scienc 2022 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.25 No.4

Loss and damage have become a vital contemporary issue in climate change studies and actions in developing countries. However, studies are scant on this in the fisheries sector around the world. In Bangladesh, there is no study on the loss and damage in fisheries dependent communities. This study assesses economic and non-economic loss and damage to coastal shrimp farms due to cyclone Bulbul in Gabura Union of Shyamnagar Upazila, Satkhira district, using a mixed method approach. Results show that all shrimp farms' dependent communities are affected by cyclone Bulbul to some extent. About 14%, 57%, and 29% of the farms were totally, heavily and moderately damaged due to farm inundation and dyke damage. The estimated mean loss and damage per shrimp farm was worth USD 4,633. Around 31% and 72% of the farms' fencing nets and traps were lost, which was worth USD 333 per farm. There were also loss and damage to other resources such as houses, solar panels, livestock and agricultural crops where the estimated mean loss and damage per household was worth USD 3,170. This study reported that the rich shrimp farmers encountered proportionately more economic loss and damage than their poor counterparts. However, this does not mean that the poor suffered less. The current study found a range of non-economic loss and damage in different aspects of the shrimp farmers' household members such as unbearable mental pain, deterioration of health, physical injuries, disabilities, etc. and access to services (e.g., inadequate food, lack of safe drinking water, lack of medical facilities, disruption of education systems), social infrastructure (e.g., damage of roads and markets) and disturbance of cultural functions. The findings suggest that urgent short- and long-term actions may be taken to save the aquaculture farms and dependent livelihoods from economic and non-economic loss and damage to cyclones in future.

Effect of Citrus macroptera Fruit Pulp Juice on Alteration of Caspase Pathway Rendering Anti-Proliferative Activity against Ehrlich’s Ascites Carcinoma in Mice

        Md. Mahmudul Hasan,Md. Shihabul Islam,Kazi Md. Faisal Hoque,Ariful Haque,Md Abu Reza 한국독성학회 2019 Toxicological Research Vol.35 No.3

Citrus macroptera (Rutaceae) has long been used in folk medicine in Bangladesh. Considering the folkloric context, this study was aimed to scrutinize anti-proliferative activity of C. macroptera fruit pulp juice (CMFPJ) against Ehrlich’s ascites carcinoma (EAC). The anti-proliferative capacity of CMFPJ was investigated and confirmed primarily using MTT assay. In vivo anti-proliferative aptitude of CMFPJ was investigated with 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg/day intraperitoneal (i.p.) treatment. Anti-proliferative efficacy of CMFPJ was assessed based on EAC growth inhibition. CMFPJ inhibited EAC growth in vitro in a dose-dependent manner. And the percentages of in vivo EAC growth inhibition were 19.53, 49.2, and 68.9% at 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg CMFPJ respectively. CMFPJ significantly induced expression of apoptosis regulatory genes caspase-8, caspase-9, cytochrome-c, and caspase-3. This considerable anti-cancer activity was perhaps due to combinatorial effect of lectin, polyphenols, and flavonoids present in CMFPJ.

In vitro Propagation and Genetic Transformation System Using Immature Embryo in Elite Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Cultivars

( Md Mahmudul Islam ),( Zahida Yesmin Roly ),( Young Sook Lee ),( Md Khalekuzzaman ) 한국육종학회 2014 Plant Breeding and Biotechnology Vol.2 No.1

Rice (Oryza sativa L.), as a cereal grain, is the most widely consumed staple food for a large part of the world`s human population especially in Asia. Three indica rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars namely BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan56 and BRRI dhan57 were used in this study to investigate the regeneration ability in rice. Regeneration potential was found to be highest (80.00%) for BRRI dhan29 and lowest (70.00%) for BRRI dhan57. Consequently, the highly regenerating indica rice cultivar BRRI dhan29 was used for genetic transformation. Embryogenic calli induced after 20 days were used for genetic transformation in the experiment. Agrobacterium strain LBA4404 was transformed with pBI121 binary vector which contains kanamycin resistance gene as a selectable marker gene and GUS as a reporter gene. Calli infected with this strain were analyzed by using 5-bromo 4-chloro 3-indolyl- D glucuronide (X-gluc) as a substrate. Expression of gene was determined by using the transformed shoots and roots. Stable integration and expression of GUS gene were also confirmed by using PCR analysis. The frequency of transformation in terms of transient GUS assay was found to be 35.0 ± 2 S.E. This study will provide valuable information for genetic transformation in cereal crops.

      • Reinforcement Learning-based UAVs Trajectory Control to assist VANETs

        Md. Mahmudul Islam,Malik Muhammad Saad,Ru Yang,Muhammad Toaha Raza Khan,Junho Seo(서준호),Dongkyun Kim(김동균) 한국통신학회 2021 한국통신학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2021 No.6

Intelligent transportation system (ITS) provides an efficient solution to road safety traffic. Enabling ITS requires connectivity among vehicles. However, dynamic vehicular net-works cause link disruption among vehicles. To overcome this, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are deployed to provide connectivity between vehicles that are beyond the communication range. UAVs act as a relay node in providing connectivity among vehicles. We propose multi-agent reinforcement learning to control the trajectory for the deployment of UAVs. Each UAV acts as an agent to find the optimal position, from where it can provide coverage to the maximum number of vehicles. The proposed scheme is expected to increase the packet delivery ratio (PDR) and throughput while reducing the end-to-end delay.

Effect of Powder Bed Fusion Process Parameters on Microstructural and Mechanical Properties of FeCrNi MEA: An Atomistic Study

        Ishat Raihan Jamil,Ali Muhit Mustaquim,Mahmudul Islam,Md Shajedul Hoque Thakur,Mohammad Nasim Hasan 대한금속·재료학회 2023 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.29 No.3

In our study, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) have been conducted on equimolarFeNiCr medium entropy alloy (MEA) powders. With the development of newer LPBF technologies capable of printing at themicroscale, an even deeper understanding of the underlying atomistic effects of the process parameters on the microstructuraland mechanical properties of the manufactured FeNiCr MEA products is required. In accordance with previous literature, the parameters of the LPBF process have been systematically varied, including layer resolution from 1 to 6, laser powerfrom 100 μW to 220 μW, bed temperature from 300 to 600 K, and laser scan speed from 0.5 Å/ps to 0.0625 Å/ps. Consistentwith prior macroscopic experimental findings, the atomistic results suggest that additive manufacturing using thinner layersimparts higher ultimate tensile strength (UTS) than fabricating with thicker layers. The latter, however, requires a shorterprocess time but induces keyhole defect formation if the laser-induced temperature is not sufficiently high enough. Increasingthe temperature proves useful in mitigating this problem. Enhancement of UTS for the multi-rowed powders has beenobserved by raising the substrate temperature to 600 K, slowing down the laser or by raising the power to 160 μW duringproduction. Beyond certain critical power, however, the UTS of the product diminishes due to the emergence of multiplevacancies. These results will help researchers to find a good balance between the production speed and strength of additivemanufactured products at the nanoscale.

      • A Comparative Analysis on Machine Learning based Intelligent Forwarding Schemes in VNDN

        Ayesha Siddiqa,Muhammad Toaha Raza Khan,Md.Mahmudul Islam,Muhammad Ashar Tariq,Malik Muhammad Saad,Dongkyun Kim 한국통신학회 2022 한국통신학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2022 No.2

Vehicular named data networks (VNDN) schemes use predefined routing information for communication rather than dynamic network information. Therefore, the researchers encourage to integrate the machine learning (ML) algorithms in VNDN for intelligent communication. In this paper, we have discussed the machine learning (ML) based vehicular named data network (VNDN) schemes for intelligent packet forwarding in highly dynamic topology. We have discussed the intelligent ML-VNDN forwarding schemes which take dynamic network information for interest/data forwarding to increase communication efficiency. Moreover, this article explains the comparative analysis between naïve VNDN schemes and ML-based NDN schemes, also discussed their future directions.
