Allelopathy of pine litter: Delivery of allelopathic substances into forest floor

Red pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.) forest forms sparse forest floor where herbaceous plants do not grow well. Allelopathic chemical interaction was speculated to play an important role in the formation of the forest floor. However, only several phenolic acids and their related compounds have been isolated from the forest floor. Those compounds are universal in many plants and cannot distinguish such strong allelopathic activity of red pine from other plants. The present research investigates whether red pine litter contains some potential allelopathic substances other than phenolics. Aqueous methanol extracts of red pine litter inhibited the growth of cress (Lepidium sativum) and Digitaria sanguinalis L., and increasing the extract concentration increased the inhibition. The extract was then purified by several chromatographies and biological activities of all separated fractions were determined. Two main inhibitory substances were finally isolated and their chemical structures were determined by spectral data as 9α,13β- epidioxyabeit-8(14)en-18-oic acid and abscisic acid-β-Dglucopyranosyl ester. These compounds may be synthesized in pine plants and delivered into the forest floor by defoliation of the needles. Their inhibitory activity on the germination and the growth may play an important role in the formation of the sparse forest floors.

Background: Pemetrexed monotherapy has come to be recognized as one of the standard second-line therapies for advanced non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, there have been no reports of studies that have evaluated the efficacy of pemetrexed according to type of active EGFR mutation, i.e., an exon 19 deletion or an L858R point mutation. Materials and Methods: The records of non-squamous NSCLC patients harboring an EGFR mutation who received pemetrexed monotherapy as a second or later line of chemotherapy at Kitasato University Hospital between March 2010 and October 2015 were retrospectively reviewed, and the treatment outcomes were evaluated. Results: The overall response rate and progression-free survival time (PFS) of the 53 patients with non-squamous NSCLC were 15.1% and 2.3 months, respectively. There were significant differences between the disease control rate (37.5% vs. 76.2%) and PFS time (1.8 months vs. 3.3 months) of the exon 19 deletion group and the L858R point mutation group, and a multivariate analysis identified type of EGFR mutation as well as performance status (PS) as independent predictors of PFS. Conclusions: The clinical data obtained in this study provided a valuable rationale for considering type of EGFR mutation as well as non-squamous histology as predictors of the efficacy of pemetrexed monotherapy.
Physical Properties of a New Ternary Compound RP₃Al<SUB>5</SUB> (R = rare earth)

Electronic properties of a new ternary f-electron system RP ₃Al<SUB>5</SUB> (R: rare earth elements) have been investigated. RPt ₃Al<SUB>5</SUB> crystalizes in the CePt ₃Al<SUB>5</SUB>-type orthorhombic structure where R atoms form 1-dimensional chains along the b-axis. LaPt ₃Al<SUB>5</SUB> shows superconductivity below 0.4 K, while others show magnetic ordering. CePt ₃Al<SUB>5</SUB> orders antiferromagnetically below T<SUB>N</SUB> = 1.2 K with spontaneous moment and shows successive magnetic transition at T<SUB>m</SUB> = 0.9 K. The nearly divalent antiferromagnet EuPt ₃Al<SUB>5</SUB> indicates an unusual valence cross-over behavior into the nearly trivalent state under high pressure of 9 GPa. It is also found that most of RPt ₃Al<SUB>5</SUB> orders antiferromagnetically and, in some cases, shows characteristic features in magnetic suscep- tibility, where the broad maximum appears slightly above T<SUB>N</SUB>, reecting the low-dimensional nature.
Ultrasonic Investigation of the Eu-based Intermetallic System EuZn₂Ge₂

In this study, an elastic property of EuZn₂Ge₂ with the tetragonal ThCr₂Si₂-type structure has been investigated by ultrasonic measurements. Elastic constants C<SUB>33</SUB> and C<SUB>44</SUB> were measured as a function of temperature and magnetic _eld applied along the [001] direction. A previous study reported that EuZn₂Ge₂ exhibited three magnetic phase transitions at T<SUB>N1</SUB> = 14.9 K, T<SUB>N2</SUB> = 8.4 K, and T<SUB>t</SUB> = 5 K. We found that an elastic anomaly appeared in the temperature dependence of both of C<SUB>33</SUB> and C<SUB>44</SUB> at T<SUB>N2</SUB>. On the other hand, the corresponding anomaly was hardly visible at T<SUB>N1</SUB> and T<SUB>t</SUB>. These results suggest that a magneto-elastic coupling at T<SUB>N2</SUB> may be relatively large compared with those at T<SUB>N1</SUB> and T<SUB>t</SUB>.
Subnanometer Vacancy Defects Introduced on Graphene by Oxygen Gas

<P>The basal plane of graphene has been known to be less reactive than the edges, but some studies observed vacancies in the basal plane after reaction with oxygen gas. Observation of these vacancies has typically been limited to nanometer-scale resolution using microscopic techniques. This work demonstrates the introduction and observation of subnanometer vacancies in the basal plane of graphene by heat treatment in a flow of oxygen gas at low temperature such as 533 K or lower. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy was used to directly observe vacancy structures, which were compared with image simulations.
