Purpose: This study was performed to determine the prognostic value of lymphocyte-to-CRP ratio after curative resection for hepatocellular carcinoma. Methods: Between July 2010 and October 2021, 173 consecutive patients (144 male, 29 female) who underwent surgical resection for pathologically confirmed hepatocellular carcinoma were included in this retrospective study. Cox regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between clinicopathological characteristics and recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS). A P-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The patients (mean age, 71 years) were stratified into high (≥9,500, n = 108) and low (<9,500, n = 65) lymphocyte- to-CRP ratio groups. The low lymphocyte-to-CRP ratio group had significantly worse RFS and OS. Low lymphocyte-to- CRP ratio (hazard ratio [HR], 1.865; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.176–2.960; P = 0.008), multiple tumors (HR, 3.333; 95% CI, 2.042–5.343; P < 0.001), and microvascular invasion (HR, 1.934; 95% CI, 1.178–3.184; P = 0.009) were independently associated with RFS, whereas low albumin-to-globulin ratio (HR, 2.270; 95% CI, 1.074–4.868; P = 0.032), α-FP of ≥25 ng/mL (HR, 2.187; 95% CI, 1.115–4.259; P = 0.023), and poor tumor differentiation (HR, 2.781; 95% CI, 1.041–6.692; P = 0.042) were independently associated with OS. Lymphocyte-to-CRP ratio had a higher area under the curve (0.635) than other inflammation-based markers (0.51–0.63). Conclusion: Lymphocyte-to-CRP ratio is superior to other inflammation-based markers as a predictor of RFS in patients with surgically resected hepatocellular carcinoma.
Vortex Lens in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y

The control of pancake vortices (PVs) caused by Josephson vortices (JVs) is demonstrated in the highly anisotropic superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y. The moderately strong attractive interactions between PVs and JVs in the crossing-lattices state under tilted fields are utilized to change the distribution of PVs. Micro-Hall probe magnetometry and differential magneto-optical imaging provide direct evidence for such a novel control. We have succeeded in visualizing the lensing effect of PVs by slowly ramping the in-plane field in the presence of a small c-axis field. How the lensing effect is affected by the history, the density of PVs, and the temperature is systematically studied.

The magnetotransport property of a hole-doped delafossite CuCr0.97Mg0.03O2 with a spin-3/2antiferromagnetic (AF) triangular sublattice was investigated by using a pulsed high magneticfield. A dramatic change of magnetoresistance was observed with a variation of temperature, whichindicates that a spin fluctuation due to a competition between the AF and the ferromagnetic Hund’sinteractions is enhanced at temperatures around the N´eel temperatures (TN). The competitionmay lead to a partially-disordered state at temperatures below TN which may cause a nontrivialpromotion of a 120˚ Neel state.
Anisotropic Magnetic Properties in Åkermanite Sr2MSi2O7 (M=Co, Mn) Crystals

We have investigated the magnetic and the dielectric properties of °akermanite Sr2CoSi2O7 and Sr2MnSi2O7 single crystals. Sr2CoSi2O7 shows a canted antiferromagnetism with a large magnetic anisotropy at temperatures below 7 K. By applying a magnetic field along the [110] direction, an electric polarization emerges along the c axis at temperatures below the magnetic transition temperature. In high magnetic fields, the saturation magnetization becomes enhanced only when the electric polarization appears. In contrast, the magnetization of Sr2MnSi2O7 is isotropic at all temperatures, and its magnetic-field-induced electric polarization is very small. These results suggest that the electronic configuration of the transition-metal ion is of crucial importance for the appearance of electric polarization.
Physical Properties of a New Ternary Compound RP₃Al<SUB>5</SUB> (R = rare earth)

Electronic properties of a new ternary f-electron system RP ₃Al<SUB>5</SUB> (R: rare earth elements) have been investigated. RPt ₃Al<SUB>5</SUB> crystalizes in the CePt ₃Al<SUB>5</SUB>-type orthorhombic structure where R atoms form 1-dimensional chains along the b-axis. LaPt ₃Al<SUB>5</SUB> shows superconductivity below 0.4 K, while others show magnetic ordering. CePt ₃Al<SUB>5</SUB> orders antiferromagnetically below T<SUB>N</SUB> = 1.2 K with spontaneous moment and shows successive magnetic transition at T<SUB>m</SUB> = 0.9 K. The nearly divalent antiferromagnet EuPt ₃Al<SUB>5</SUB> indicates an unusual valence cross-over behavior into the nearly trivalent state under high pressure of 9 GPa. It is also found that most of RPt ₃Al<SUB>5</SUB> orders antiferromagnetically and, in some cases, shows characteristic features in magnetic suscep- tibility, where the broad maximum appears slightly above T<SUB>N</SUB>, reecting the low-dimensional nature.
