The Myth of the “New Phoenicians" : Are Lebanese People Really Cosmopolitan?
Masaki Mizobuchi,Yutaka Takaoka 부산외국어대학교 지중해지역원 2013 The Mediterranean Review Vol.6 No.1
Most previous studies have assumed the following hypothesis: the Lebanese diaspora continues to have strong attachments to the homeland based on close networks of personal connections, and almost all Lebanese have a strong interest in foreign countries through such networks. That is why the Lebanese have come to be commonly known as the “New Phoenicians.” Furthermore, the large amount of remittances from the Lebanese diaspora has been pointed out by almost all previous studies as clear evidence of such networks. The BCRI’s “Middle East Opinion Poll (Lebanon 2010)” and the “Middle East Opinion Poll (Lebanon 2012),” conducted in collaboration with our Japanese research team, however, presented a serious challenge to the common belief. Thus, we conclude that the widespread image of the Lebanese as “New Phoenicians” represents only a small segment of society; in contrast, the majority of middle- or low-income Lebanese do not receive any benefit from such global networks. Fabrication of BIT Thick Films Patterned by Proton Beam Writing
Masaki Yamaguchi,Kazuki Watanabe,Hiroyuki Nishikawa,Yoichiro Masuda 한국물리학회 2017 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.71 No.2
In this study, we fabricated thick films with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) added to bismuth titanate (Bi4Ti3O12) to form a lead-free ferroelectric material. We examined the direct patterning of these materials by using proton-beam irradiation. When 50% PVP was added to the organic source solution, the c-axis orientation was promoted and cracks were suppressed due to stress relaxation. In addition, a dot and an arbitrary-shape micro-pattern were formed on bismuth-titanate thick film by micromachining using a proton beam.

Many patients with mental disorders visit emergency departments (EDs). However, the majority of these patients do not receive psychiatric assessment. In the present study, we investigated the detailed proportion of patients with mental disorders visiting an urban ED in the largest northern city in Japan. A retrospective chart review study was performed at a University Hospital from January 2012 to December 2015. The reasons for psychiatric consultations made by ED staff, and the primary psychiatric diagnoses were investigated. Among all living patients, 20% of them received consultations. The most common reason for consultation was suicide attempt followed by agitation or insomnia. Of all diagnoses, organic mental disorder was the most frequent and the mean age was significantly higher than the other diagnostic groups. Our study indicated that the frequency of psychiatric consultation was high. This indicates the high demand for mental health services at the ED. A thorough psychiatric assessment can provide adequate psychiatric services to acute patients; thereby possibly preventing suicide attempters from later actually dying by suicide.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether a vocabulary size test is a valid and reliable measure of longitudinal growth in vocabulary size (VS), and to investigate the relationship between growth in VS and use of vocabulary learning strategies (VLS). Kasahara's (2006) revised version of Mochizuki's (1998) Vocabulary Size Test (VST) was administered to 209 Japanese senior high school students at three time points during their course of study. In addition, a VLS questionnaire based on Schmitt’s (1997) taxonomy was administered and used to investigate the relationship between vocabulary growth and patterns of strategy use. Cronbach alpha for the three administrations of the VST ranged from .79 to .85, indicating adequate reliability of the VST. A cluster analysis of strategy use yielded three distinct patterns: low, medium, and high frequency use of strategies. A two-way mixed ANOVA with year as the within-subjects factor and strategy cluster as the between-subjects factor found a significant mean effect for year and strategy use, but no effect for the interaction. The large effect size for year supports the claim that the revised VST is a valid measure of vocabulary size for Japanese high school students. The relationship between VS and strategy use confirms the potential of the revised VST for investigating theoretical and pedagogical factors affecting vocabulary growth.
