<P/><P>We report on the successful integration of low-cost, conformal, and versatile atomic layer deposited (ALD) dielectric in Ni–Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>–Co magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) where the Ni is coated with a spin-filtering graphene membrane. The ALD tunnel barriers, as thin as 0.6 nm, are grown layer-by-layer in a simple, low-vacuum, ozone-based process, which yields high-quality electron-transport barriers as revealed by tunneling characterization. Even under these relaxed conditions, including air exposure of the interfaces, a significant tunnel magnetoresistance is measured highlighting the robustness of the process. The spin-filtering effect of graphene is enhanced, leading to an almost fully inversed spin polarization for the Ni electrode of −42%. This unlocks the potential of ALD for spintronics with conformal, layer-by-layer control of tunnel barriers in magnetic tunnel junctions toward low-cost fabrication and down-scaling of tunnel resistances.</P>
Prehospital Levetiracetam Use in Adults With Status Epilepticus: Results of a Multicenter Registry

Background and Purpose Status epilepticus (SE) is a neurological emergency due to prolonged seizure activity or multiple seizures without full recovery in between them. Prehospital SE management is crucial since its duration is correlated with higher morbidity and mortality rates. We examined the impact of different therapeutic strategies in the prehospital setting with a focus on levetiracetam. Methods We initiated the Project for SE in Cologne, a scientific association of all neurological departments of Cologne, the fourth-largest city in Germany with around 1,000,000 inhabitants. All patients with an SE diagnosis were evaluated over 2 years (from March 2019 to February 2021) to determine whether prehospital levetiracetam use had a significant effect on SE parameters. Results We identified 145 patients who received initial drug therapy in the prehospital setting by professional medical staff. Various benzodiazepine (BZD) derivatives were used as first-line treatments, which were mostly used in line with the recommended guidelines. Levetiracetam was regularly used (n=42) and mostly in combination with BZDs, but no significant additional effect was observed for intravenous levetiracetam. However, it appeared that the administered doses tended to be low. Conclusions Levetiracetam can be applied to adults with SE in prehospital settings with little effort. Nevertheless, the prehospital treatment regimen described here for the first time did not significantly improve the preclinical cessation rate of SE. Future therapy concepts should be based on this, and the effects of higher doses should in particular be reexamined.

Purpose : To describe how a robust implementation of a radial 3D gradient-echo sequence with stack-of-stars samplingcan be achieved, to review the imaging properties of radial acquisitions, and to share the experience from more than5000 clinical patient scans. Materials and Methods: A radial stack-of-stars sequence was implemented and installed on 9 clinical MR systems operatingat 1.5 and 3 Tesla. Protocols were designed for various applications in which motion artifacts frequently pose a problemwith conventional Cartesian techniques. Radial scans were added to routine examinations without selection of specificpatient cohorts. Results: Radial acquisitions show significantly lower sensitivity to motion and allow examinations during free breathing. Elimination of breath-holding reduces failure rates for non-compliant patients and enables imaging at higher resolution. Residual artifacts appear as streaks, which are easy to identify and rarely obscure diagnostic information. The improvedrobustness comes at the expense of longer scan durations, the requirement for fat suppression, and the nonexistence of atime-to-center value. Care needs to be taken during the configuration of receive coils. Conclusion: Routine clinical use of radial stack-of-stars sequences is feasible with current MR systems and may serve assubstitute for conventional fat-suppressed T1-weighted protocols in applications where motion is likely to degrade theimage quality

Development of a Homogenous Test Scheme for Bus-Based and Multiplex-Based Data Path Architectures

Almost all high-level synthesis tools either use a bus-based or a multiplex-based architecture to implement the data-path. Each of these architectures presents advantages and disadvantages and there is no definitive argument to support any of them as the best choice (1), (2), (3). In either case, the final data-path must be tested. It is important to emphasize that to ensure the reliability of the device all functional units, all connections and all registers must be thoroughly tested. Given that two architecture classes are available and that inside each of the classes many different solutions are possible, we may argue if there is a systematic test approach that can be always used. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the possible architectural solutions and derives a homogenous test scheme that can be employed for all cases. This is a very relevant result because it implies that the high-level synthesis does not have to bother about testability as far as bus-based or mux-based architectures are concerned. Furthermore, this paper focuses the analysis on built-in self test. The achieved homogeneity means that a single test controller synthesizable description may be devised for any data-path. As a consequence the cost of implementing a built-in self test can be precisely evaluated.

Evidence from several epidemiological and experimental studies points to a beneficial role of dietary polyphenols in inflammatory bowel disease. In this study, we investigate the protective effect of dietary supplementation with various amounts of a polyphenol-rich grape pomace extract (GPE) on the development of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in rats. Rats were fed 21 days on a semisynthetic diet enriched with GPE (0.1%, 0.5%, and 1%), and acute colitis was induced by DSS (40 g/L in the drinking water) administration during the last 7 days. The low GPE content in the diet (0.1%) attenuated clinical signs and colon shortening and limited DSS-induced histological lesions. GPE 0.1% also attenuated the DSS-induced increase in myeloperoxidase activity and improved superoxide dismutase activity. Higher amounts of GPE in the diet induced only weak and nonsignificant protective effects. These results suggest that consumption of a low amount of polyphenol-rich GPE helps protect against colitis development.

The present paper is a review of the main activities carried out within the context of the COMPTINN' program, a joint research project founded by a FUI program (Fonds $Unifi{\acute{e}}s$ $Interminist{\acute{e}}riels$) in which four research teams focused on the thermo-oxidation behaviour of HTS-TACTIX carbon-epoxy composite at 'high' temperatures ($120^{\circ}C-180^{\circ}C$). The scientific aim of the COMPTINN' program was to better identify, with a multi-scale approach, the link between the physico-chemical mechanisms involved in thermo-oxidation phenomena, and to provide theoretical and numerical tools for predicting the mechanical behaviour of aged composite materials including damage onset and development.

Experience of host-associated olfactory stimuli during development affects subsequent foraging decisions in many parasitoids, leading to host fidelity. We have recently shown that odours emitted by an alien host-plant complex (HPC) may affect this learning process. However, the consequences of this olfactory experience on parasitoid host foraging decisions is unknown. Here, we investigated if olfactory preferences induced by ex perience might drive parasitoid HPC choice and oviposition decisions. We presented two HPCs in dual choice experiments to Aphidius ervi females that had been reared on each HPC, either in a simple (one HPC) or complex (two HPCs) olfactory environment. HPC choice, time before landing on a HPC and number of aphid attacks were recorded. Early experience had contrasting effects on each of these parameters. Regardless of their origin, parasitoids did not land preferentially on any HPC, but they more frequently attacked one of the two hosts (Acyrthosiphon pisum) once they had landed on its HPC. Females emerging from the A. pisum/faba bean HPC attacked more aphids, regardless of the host species. Finally, the olfactory complexity of the environment had inconsistent effects on foraging decisions. These observations, contrasting with previous results obtained in olfactometer assays, indicate that olfactory preferences induced in early stages are not sufficient to predict parasitoid oviposition decisions. Moreover, the integration of multiple signals at several scales might generate different foraging patterns at each step of the host selection process.

Worldwide prevalence of noncommunicable chronic degenerative diseases is among the main causes of death worldwide. The consumption of some foods such as nuts and seeds may be beneficial in preventing these diseases. Dipteryx alata Vogel (DA), known popularly as Baru, belongs to the family Fabaceae and is a native fruit tree from the Brazilian savanna. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of seeds of DA on the metabolic and oxidative profile of Wistar rats. Animals were divided randomly into four groups (n = 10): G1 (control group), and G2 (treated with DA 20%), G3 (treated with DA 30%), and G4 (treated with DA 40%). After 40 days, animals were euthanized and metabolic and oxidative profiles were analyzed (glycemia, cholesterol, triglycerides [TGs], high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol [HDL-c], very low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol [VLDL-c], low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol [LDL-c], C reactive protein, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, Lee index, weight, visceral fat, ferric reducing ability of plasma, and ferric–xylenol orange method. The use of the seeds was effective in reducing TGs, VLDL-c, LDL-c, and increasing HDL-c but did not interfere in the percentage of weight gain, visceral fat, levels of total cholesterol, and oxidative stress. Based on our results, it is possible to say that the use of DA may improve the lipid profile of Wistar rats and we may suggest that the consumption of DA almonds or products prepared with them may be an effective option for the intake of healthy products.
