        Numerical evaluation of periodic nanowire-based phase sensitive surface plasmon resonance detection

        Localized surface plasmon (SP)-based amplification of sensitivity in a phase-sensitive SP resonance (SPR) biosensor is investigated numerically. SP is localized by surface-relief periodic nanowires. An optimum sample obtained by modeling DNA hybridization and water-glycerin mixture employed a gold grating with 300nm period and 10nm thickness on a gold film and an SF10 glass substrate. The localized SPR structure was shown to have the sensitivity enhanced by more than 10 times than conventional SPR for detecting DNA hybridization at an identical film thickness of 40nm. The enhancement was found to be associated with field localization near the nanostructure. The results suggest a novel approach of improving the sensitivity of SPR detection.

        Control Effect on Root-knot Nematodes by Hot Water Dipping Treatment in Kiwifruit

        When kiwifruit root system infected with nematodes was treated by hot water dipping treatment, the maximum temperature for this treatment was suggested as $50^{\circ}C$. The lowest killing temperature of internal root-knot in the root tissue was $48^{\circ}C$. Consequently, root-knot nematodes could be killed without damaging root tissues by the hot water dipping treatment at $48^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes. This could be useful for organic production and distribution of kiwifruit seedlings by avoiding the synthetic nematicides which are not easily decomposed in soil once applied.

      • Hydrogenation of monolayer molybdenum diselenide via hydrogen plasma treatment

        <P>Functionalization of transition metal dichalcogenides has been studied with the aim of tuning their electrical and optical properties, but structural information during functionalization and its reversibility have not been elucidated. We report a simple and effective method for hydrogenation of monolayer MoSe2 using hydrogen plasma treatment. The covalent bonding of hydrogen to MoSe2 was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the degree of hydrogenation was modulated from 32% to 80% by increasing the plasma treatment time from 5 to 40 s. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed a 1.5% reduction in the lattice constant of hydrogenated MoSe2 without structural damages or defects; crystal structures of hydrogenated MoSe2 and as-prepared MoSe2 were identical. Photoluminescence (PL) investigation of hydrogenated MoSe2 showed charge transfer from hydrogen to MoSe2. Furthermore, reversible desorption of hydrogen from hydrogenated MoSe2 was achieved by heat treatment. The optical and electrical properties of as-prepared and hydrogenated MoSe2 samples were compared. The PL peak of hydrogenated MoSe2 returned to the as-prepared one after heat treatment at 500 degrees C. Furthermore, the electron mobility of MoSe2 decreased from 29 to 9 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) after hydrogenation and was restored to 27 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) upon heat treatment at 500 degrees C. This reversible hydrogen adsorption and desorption lends control over the optical and electrical properties of monolayer MoSe2 and contributes to the hydrogen functionalization of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides and other two-dimensional materials.</P>

        The Nested Variable Model of FDI Spillover Effects: Estimation Using Hungarian Panel Data

        A new empirical model is presented that considers the productivity spillover effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) by focusing on the multi-layered structure of industrial classifications. In this model, the market presence of horizontal FDI in a host country is expressed using multiple spillover variables with a nested structure corresponding to the aggregated level of industrial classification. Using large-scale firm-level data from Hungary, we estimated the nested variable model and verified horizontal FDI spillover effects that cannot be captured with the conventional model having a single horizontal variable.

        The valley Hall effect in MoS<sub>2</sub> transistors

        <P><B>Using the valleys in monolayer MoS<SUB>2</SUB></B></P><P>The electronic structure of the two-dimensional material MoS<SUB>2</SUB> has two distinct “valleys” of energy that may help to carry information in future electronic devices. Mak <I>et al.</I> observed the so-called valley Hall effect in a monolayer of MoS<SUB>2</SUB>. The electrons from different valleys moved in opposite directions across the sample, with one valley being overrepresented with respect to the other. The scientists achieved this by shining circularly polarized light on the material, which created an imbalance in the population of the two valleys. The findings may enable practical applications in the newly formed field of valleytronics.</P><P><I>Science</I>, this issue p. 1489</P>

      • USING WALKING-WITH APPROACH TO EXPLORE EMBODIED DINING PRACTICES FOR WORKPLACE IMPRESSION MANAGEMENT

        Consumer studies mainly take a cross-sectional approach to understand leisure and home consumption. This paper takes the mundane workplace as a unit of consumption and adopts a processual view to understand what and how cultural capital for impression management is acquired and changes over career trajectories. Integrating the theories of Goffman (1959) and Bourdieu (1977; 1984; 1990), the study explores how embodied habitual practices (habitus) enables and shapes impression management to build desirable work identity (Hallett, 2003). The walking-with interviews are used to seek conversations with senior executives in Hong Kong along their work routes. It proves to be a proficient approach and data collection technique to explore mundane consumption practices where knowledge is incorporated with people’s competence and artefacts (Mak, Lai, Tsaousi, & Davies, 2022). Among different resources for impression management, dining knowledge emerged as a significant cultural practices for performative self and building up of social capital.

        Intraoperative femoral condyle fracture in primary total knee arthroplasty - a case-control study in Asian population

        Purpose: Intraoperative femoral condyle fracture is a significant but rarely reported complication during primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This is the first study to identify the incidence, risk factors, location and outcome of these fractures in an Asian population with modern posterior-stabilized (PS) TKA. Materials and methods: We reviewed 2682 consecutive primary TKAs performed between 2011 and 2017 in a single centre; 23 femoral condyle fractures were identified and analysed. Results: Fractures were managed conservatively with screw fixation or revision arthroplasty. Mean follow up was 3.0 years (range 3 months to 5.9 years). All patients achieved bone union and good functional outcome. The mean Knee Society Knee score was 89.4 (range 71–100) and the function score was 80.2 (range 60–95) at a mean of 3.0 years post-operation. Bilateral surgery was found to be a significant risk factor for femoral condyle fracture, while there was a higher trend of fracture in female patients and Stryker articular surface mounted (ASM) navigation. Conclusions: Intraoperative fracture is not uncommon with modern PS TKA. Postulated risk factors for fracture were discussed. Early identification of risk factors and a rigorous surgical technique may reduce risk of fracture. A good functional result was expected after proper treatment.

      • Adoption of Overhead Rigid Conductor Rail System in MTR Extensions

        The conventional overhead catenary system for both 1500V d.c. traction system and 25kV a.c. traction system have been used in the existing railways of Mass Transit Railway Corporation Limited (MTRCL) in Hong Kong for over 20 years. Another type of overhead line system, the overhead rigid conductor rail system has now been increasingly used in the tunnel sections of underground metro system in Europe, Mainland China and South Korea. The non-tension and low resistance characteristics of the rigid conductor rail system have advantages in enhancing and improving various aspects including energy efficiency, reliability, maintainability and availability of the overhead line system. This paper gives an outline of the overhead rigid conductor rail system and the benefits of adopting such system for the new MTR extensions including West Island Line, Kwun Tong Line Extension, South Island Line (East) and Shatin to Central Link. The result of simulation study to demonstrate the acceptable dynamic performance for the interface with the pantograph of rolling stock for line operating speed up to 130kph is included in this paper.
