A New Record of Nannizziopsis mirabilis from Field Soil in Korea

Nannizziopsis mirabilis (KNU17-67) was isolated from a field soil sample collected from Jejudo in 2017. This fungal isolate was identified and described by its morphological characters and the internal transcribed spacer rDNA gene sequencing. Potato dextrose agar medium was used to study its macro and micromorphology. In addition, a molecular phylogenetic tree was constructed for its precise confirmation as N. mirabilis . This fungal isolate has not officially been reported previously in Korea.
Seven Unrecorded Fungal Species from Field Soils in Korea

Seven unrecorded species in the phylum Ascomycota, Emericellopsis pallida (KNU16-167), Scedosporium aurantiacum (KNU16-190), Duddingtonia flagrans (KNU16-279), Bionectria rossmaniae (KNU16-309), Exophiala xenobiotica (KNU16-79), Pseudocercosporella fraxini (KNU16-102), and Stachybotrys sansevieriae (KNU16-141), were isolated in 2016 from field soils collected from various locations in Korea. All of the species were identified and described based on morphological characteristics and rDNA internal transcribed spacer sequence data. Morphological features of these fungi were examined on potato dextrose agar, oatmeal agar, malt extract agar, Czapek yeast extract agar, and yeast extract sucrose agar. Full descriptions and illustrations of their morphological characteristics are provided.
Intra-Specific Variability forSalinity Tolerance in Indian Mucuna pruriens L. (DC.) Germplasm

Mucuna pruriens L. (DC.) is a tropical legume cover crop with important agronomic and medicinal uses. Assessment of intra-specific variability for salt tolerance can aid its introduction in salinity affected areas. This paper reports first study on germplasm screening for variability in this trait among 35 accessions evaluated using nine indicative parameters. The experiments carried out under controlled condition revealed different levels of tolerance for the selected growth (3), physiological (2), and biochemical (2) characters - of which the first two provided reliable indicators for large-scale screening. Overlaying this data with diversity estimates from the AFLP analysis revealed 19 genetically divergent (> 90%) parental combinations that are useful for breeding as well as genetic mapping of this trait. Thus, this investigation opens-up new prospects for genetic improvement of M. pruriens to resourcefully recover them for coastal agriculture.
Two New Records of Ascomycetes from Crop Field Soils in Korea

In the ongoing survey of fungal diversity in Korea, two Ascomycetes species, namely Rhinocladiella similis and Toxicocladosporium irritans, were isolated in 2016. These species were identified based on the internal transcribed spacer region and morphological characteristics. This is the first report of these species in Korea, and the morphological characteristics and images of the fungi are presented.

Background: Use of prebiotics in companion animal nutrition is often considered advantageous over probiotics because of the ease of handling, ability to withstand processing and storage etc. While most of the studies on prebiotic use in dogs have been done with processed food as basal diet, the response in relation to homemade diet feeding is not very well explored. Methods: The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary mannanoligosaccharide (MOS) supplementation on nutrient digestibility, hindgut fermentation, immune response and antioxidant indices in dogs. Ten Spitz pups were divided into two groups: control (CON) with no supplementation, and experimental (MOS) wherein the basal diet was supplemented with MOS at 15 g/kg diet. All dogs were fed on a home-prepared diet for a period of 150 days. The study protocol included a digestion trial, periodic blood collection and analysis for lipid profile and erythrocytic antioxidants. Immune response of the animals was assessed towards the end of the feeding period. Results: Results revealed no significant (P > 0.05) variations in palatability score, intake and apparent digestibility of nutrients between the groups. Faecal score, faeces voided, faecal pH, concentrations of ammonia, lactate and short-chain fatty acids were comparable (P > 0.05) between the two groups. Cell-mediated immune response, assessed as delayed-type of hypersensitivity response, was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the MOS group. The percent of lymphocyte sub-populations CD4+ and ratio of CD4+:CD8+ were also significantly (P < 0.05) higher in MOS group. The serum IgG levels were similar (P > 0.05) in both the groups. Supplementation of MOS lowered (P < 0.05) serum total- and LDL- cholesterol levels, when compared with the control group. The erythrocytic antioxidant indices were similar (P > 0.05) between the two groups. Conclusions: The results indicated that supplementation of MOS at the rate of 15 g/kg in the diet of dog augmented the cell-mediated immune response and serum lipid profile without any influences on digestibility of nutrients, hindgut fermentation and antioxidants indices.

Osteoclasts are unique bone remodeling cells derived from multinucleated myeloid progenitor cells. They play homeostatic vital roles in skeletal modeling and remodeling but also destroy bone masses in many pathological conditions such as osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Receptor activation of NF-KB li-gand (RANKL) is essential osteclastogenesis. In this study, we investigated the effects of bromo-honaucin A (Br-H A) isolated from Leptolyngbya crossbyana (cyanobacterium). To investigate the me-chanism of the inhibitory effect of Br-H A on osteoclstogenesis. we employed Br-H Ain RANKL-treated murine monocyte/macrophage RAW 264.7 cells for osteoclastic differentiation in-vitro. The inhibitory effects on in-vitro osteoclastogenesis was evaluated by counting the number of Tartarate resistant acid phospatase (TRAP) positive multinucleated cells and by measuring the expression level of osteoclast-specific genes like matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9). cathepsin K (CATH K), GRB2-associated-binding protein 2 (GAB2), c-terminal myc kinase (C-MYC). C-terminal Src kinase (C-SRC) and Microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF). Moreover, Br-H A blocked the resorbing capacity of RAW 264.7 cells on calcium phosphate-coated plates. Finally, Br-H A clearly decreased the expression of Akt and also decreased the activation of ERK. Thus, the study identifies Br-H A as potent inhibitor potentialin the treatment of diseases involving abnormal bone lysis such as osteoporosis. rheumatoid arthritis, and periodontal bone degradation.
Factors Associated With Stillbirth Among Pregnant Women in Nepal

Objectives: Stillbirth is a common adverse pregnancy outcome that represents a distressing and traumatic event for women and their partners. The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with stillbirth in ever-pregnant women in Nepal. Methods: This study utilized the individual women’s dataset from the Nepal Demographic and Health Survey, conducted in 2016. The dependent variable of interest was whether women had at least 1 stillbirth during their lifetime. The associations between independent variables and the dependent variable of the study were analyzed using a multiple logistic regression model. Results: Among 8918 ever-pregnant women aged 15-49 years, 488 had experienced at least 1 stillbirth during their lifetime, representing 5.5% of the total. After adjusting each factor for the confounding effects of other factors, maternal age, maternal education, place of residence, and sub-region remained significantly associated with having experienced stillbirth. Conclusions: Stillbirth continues to be a major problem among women, especially those with higher maternal age, those who are illiterate, and residents of certain geographical regions. To minimize stillbirth in Nepal, plans and policies should be focused on women with low education levels and residents of rural areas, especially in the western mountain and far-western hill regions.
Aspergillus caninus (Syn: Phialosimplex caninus): a New Isolate from Field Soils in Korea

During the study of indigenous fungal communities in soil samples collected from various field soils in Sancheong, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea in 2017, several species of Aspergillus were discovered. Aspergillus caninus (KNU17-7) was isolated, identified, and described based on the results from macro and micro morphological characteristics and molecular characterization. Morphologically, it was identified using five different growth media: potato dextrose agar, oatmeal agar, yeast extract sucrose agar, czapek yeast extract agar, and malt extract agar. For the molecular identification, sequencing of internal transcribed spacer, β-tubulin, and calmodulin genes was performed. Based on this characterization, our study isolate was identified as Aspergillus caninus. This fungal species has not been officially reported in Korea before, and we report here with its morphological and molecular phylogenetic characterization.
