        Hypolipidemic Effect of Moringa oleifera Lam Leaf Powder and its Extract in Diet-Induced Hypercholesterolemic Rats

        The leaves of Moringa oleifera Lam possess some potential medicinal value. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of M. oleifera leaf powder and its extract against hyperlipidemia in rats. Adult male albino rats were divided into six groups. The first group was fed on a basal diet that served as a negative control, whereas the others were fed on a high-fat diet (HFD) containing moringa leaf powder at 0.737% or 1.475% or administered daily with 200 or 400 mg dry moringa leaf extract/kg bw for 60 days. A positive control group was fed on the HFD. Serum indices related to lipid profile, oxidative status, and liver function were analyzed. Feeding rats on an HFD containing moringa leaf powder at 0.737% or an oral dose of its dry extract at 400 mg/kg bw alleviated the harmful elevation of cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, malondialdehyde, and the activities of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase in serum that were induced by the HFD. This is the first study demonstrating the hypocholesterolemic effect of M. oleifera leaf powder.

        Novel Brominated Quinoline and Pyrimidoquinoline Derivatives as Potential Cytotoxic Agents with Synergistic Effects of γ-Radiation

        New quinoline derivatives 6, 7 and 19, pyrimidoquinoline derivatives 8-16 and triazolopyrimidoquinoline derivatives 17 and 18 bearing a bromo-substituent were synthesized starting from 3-(4-Bromophenylamino)-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-2-enone 3. All the newly synthesized compounds were evaluated for their in vitro anticancer activity against human breast cancer cell line (MCF7). Compounds 9, 11, 17 and 18 showed IC50 values (36.4, 39.7, 39.02 and 36.4 μM, respectively) comparable to that of the reference drug doxorubicin (IC50 = 32.02 μM). On the other hand, compound 6, 14 and 19 exhibited better activity than doxorubicin with IC50 values of 8.5, 23.5 and 23.7 μM. Additionally, the most potent compounds 6, 14 and 19 were evaluated for their ability to enhance the cell killing effect of γ-radiation.

        Novel 4-(4-substituted-thiazol-2-ylamino)-N-(pyridin-2-yl)-benzenesulfonamides as Cytotoxic and Radiosensitizing Agents

        A series of novel 4-(4-substituted-thiazol-2-ylamino)-N-(pyridin-2-yl) benzene-sulfonamides were synthesized and screened for their cytotoxic activity against human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7). Compounds 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, and 14 displayed significant activity against MCF-7 when compared to doxorubicin, which was used as a reference drug. The synergistic effect of Gamma radiation for the most active derivatives 7, 9, and 11 was also studied and their IC50 values markedly decreased to 11.9 μM, 11.7 μM, and 11.6 μM, respectively.

        Dual Sliding Statistics Switching Median Filter for the Removal of Low Level Random-Valued Impulse Noise

        A new nonlinear filtering algorithm for effectively denoising images corrupted by the random-valued impulse noise, called dual sliding statistics switching median (DSSSM) filter is presented in this paper. The proposed DSSSM filter is made up of two subunits; i.e. Impulse noise detection and noise filtering. Initially, the impulse noise detection stage of DSSSM algorithm begins by processing the statistics of a localized detection window in sorted order and non-sorted order, simultaneously. Next, the median of absolute difference (MAD) obtained from both sorted statistics and non-sorted statistics will be further processed in order to classify any possible noise pixels. Subsequently, the filtering stage will replace the detected noise pixels with the estimated median value of the surrounding pixels. In addition, fuzzy based local information is used in the filtering stage to help the filter preserves the edges and details. Extensive simulations results conducted on gray scale images indicate that the DSSSM filter performs significantly better than a number of well-known impulse noise filters existing in literature in terms of noise suppression and detail preservation; with as much as 30% impulse noise corruption rate. Finally, this DSSSM filter is algorithmically simple and suitable to be implemented for electronic imaging products.

      • Optimal Maintenance Scheduling in a Two Identical Component Parallel Redundant System Subject to Exponential Power Hazards

        This paper presents equations, which can be used to evaluate the failure frequency and the failure rate of a two identical component parallel redundant system in which each component can operate in its wear out period, and the failure rate of each component is exponential power distribution. The optimum maintenance interval for a two identical component parallel redundant system can be obtained using these equations. The proposed approach is presented and illustrated using several numerical examples. The optimum maintenance interval for each component in a two identical parallel redundant system will depend on factors such as: failure rate, repair and maintenance times of each component in the parallel redundant systems.

        Establishment of callogenesis and plant regeneration protocols for endemic Origanum syriacum ssp. sinaicum

        Origanum syriacum ssp. sinaicum is a medicinal perennial endemic herb grown in the mountain areas in Saint Katherine, Sinai, Egypt. Leaves of this species have a history of use in traditional herbal medicine. The efects of Murashige and Skoog’s medium (MS) containing auxins alone or in combination with cytokinin to produce calli were investigated. The obtained results showed that MS medium containing 2 mg L−1 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) alone recorded the earliest callusing time and the best callus percentage formation. The combination of 0.25 mg L−1 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) with 2 mg L−1 2,4-D resulted in the highest callus percentage and fresh weight. The diferent levels of growth regulators in the media exhibited the morphological changes in calli. Nodal segments were more efective than leaf explants in terms of callus percentage, callus fresh and dry weight, and callus initiation time. After 45 days of callus culture, the combination of 1 mg L−1 BA with 0.25 mg L−1 α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) was successful in promoting organogenesis, resulting in a high frequency of shootlets. The maximum number of rooting shootlets was achieved by supplementing the MS medium with 0.5 mg L−1 indole-3 butyric acid (IBA). This study reports an efective plant regeneration protocol that can be used for the conservation of endemic species.

        DFT and experimental study on adsorption of dyes on activated carbon prepared from apple leaves

        This work reports utilization of apple leaves as a source of activated carbon. Activated carbon from apple leaves is prepared by two diferent methods, thermal activation where AC1 is obtained and chemical activation using H3PO4 and ZnCl2 where AC2 and AC3 are obtained, respectively. XRD analysis revealed that all types of prepared ACs have a semi-crystalline nature with a mean crystallite size of 13, 21.02, and 39.47 nm for AC1, AC2, and AC3, respectively. To identify the most suitable desorption temperature, the exothermic behavior was discovered for the three types of ACs by DSC. The exothermic onset temperatures are 340 °C, 200 °C, 400 °C, or AC1, AC2, and AC3, respectively. The point of zero charge for the three types of ACs is 8.6, 7.3, and 2.5 for AC1, AC2, and AC3, respectively. The BET surface area analysis data demonstrated that mesoporous structure was developed in AC1 and AC2, while a microporous structure was developed in AC3. Quantum chemical calculations for ACs is carried out using Density Functional Theory (DFT). Application of the prepared ACs in adsorption of basic dye C.I. base blue 47 is studied. The maximum removal efciency was 65.1%, 96% and 99% for AC1, AC2, and AC3, respectively under the infuence of diferent operating aspects. Adsorption data are modeled by Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms. The data revealed that adsorption of basic dye C.I. base blue 47 on AC1 follows Langmuir isotherm and adsorption on AC2 and AC3 follows Freundlich isotherm.

        최근 저탄소 녹색성장의 달성을 위해 전력기기의 에너지효율 특성을 보다 정밀하게 측정하는 것이 요구되고 있다. 전력에너지 전달에 필수적으로 쓰이는 변성기류의 손실평가를 위해 부담특성의 정확한 평가가 요구된다. 이를 위해 부담의 기본요소인 저주파 임피던스를 보다 능률적으로 유연하게 측정할 수 있는 디지털 듀얼소스 브라지 (Dual Source Bridge)를 고안하고, 실험을 통해 그 가능성을 조사하는 연구가 수행되었다. 이론적인 분석과 아울러 1㎑에서 교류저항을 기준저항에 대해 측정하는 실험을 수행한 결과 별도의 위상안정화 수단 없이도 상용의 전압원을 이용하여 약 10?⁴ 이내의 정밀도가 달성됨으로써, 고안된 더블소스 브리지가 원리적으로 타당성이 있음이 입증되었다. 디지털 전압원의 위상 및 진폭의 안정도를 개선할 여지가 많아 고안된 디지털 더블소스 브리지는 향후 매우 유용한 저주파 임피던스 측정수단으로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

      • Expression Patterns of Cancer Stem Cell Markers During Specific Celecoxib Therapy in Multistep Rat Colon Carcinogenesis Bioassays

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of colon cancer stem cells (CSCs) during chemically-induced rat multi-step colon carcinogenesis with or without the treatment with a specific cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor drug (celecoxib). Two experiments were performed, the first, a short term 12 week colon carcinogenesis bioassay in which only surrogate markers for colon cancer, aberrant crypt foci (ACF) lesions, were formed. The other experiment was a medium term colon cancer rat assay in which tumors had developed after 32 weeks. Treatment with celecoxib lowered the numbers of ACF, as well as the tumor volumes and multiplicities after 32 weeks. Immunohistochemical proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) labeling indexes LI (%) were downregulated after treatment by celecoxib. Also different cell surface antigens known to associate with CSCs such as the epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM), CD44 and CD133 were compared between the two experiments and showed differential expression patterns depending on the stage of carcinogenesis and treatment with celecoxib. Flow cytometric analysis demonstrated that the numbers of CD133 cells were increased in the colonic epithelium after 12 weeks while those of CD44 but not CD133 cells were increased after 32 weeks. Moreover, aldehyde dehydrogenase-1 activity levels in the colonic epithelium (a known CSC marker) detected by ELISA assay were found down-regulated after 12 weeks, but were up-regulated after 32 weeks. The data have also shown that the protective effect of celecoxib on these specific markers and populations of CSCs and on other molecular processes such as apoptosis targeted by this drug may vary depending on the genetic and phenotypic stages of carcinogenesis. Therefore, uncovering these distinction roles of CSCs during different phases of carcinogenesis and during specific treatment could be useful for targeted therapy.
