<P>We developed a simple dual signal (color and ‘<I>Off</I>-<I>On</I>’ fluorescent change) ensemble system based on the complex between a rhodamine derivative <B>1</B> and Al<SUP>3+</SUP> for the detection of pyrophosphate (PPi) in 100% aqueous solutions. The complex between the rhodamine compound and Al<SUP>3+</SUP> was utilized as a chemosensing ensemble for the first time. The ensemble showed highly sensitive and selective fluorescent and colorimetric response to pyrophosphate among the anions in 100% aqueous solutions and no interference of the potent biological competitors including ATP, ADP, and phosphate for the detection of PPi in 100% aqueous solutions at pH 7.4.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>A simple dual signal ensemble system based on the complex between a rhodamine derivative <B>1</B> and Al<SUP>3+</SUP> was developed for the detection of pyrophosphate (PPi) in 100% aqueous solutions. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c0an00059k'> </P>
Sustainable Development: Some Reflections in the Asian Context

Although Asia has experienced remarkable economic growth for the past two decades, the growth has been followed by social and economic inequality and environmental degradation. The challenges that Asia faces remain as big obstacles and appropriate measures need to be taken for the region’s sustainability. Hence, in order for Asia to pursue sustainable growth, the study emphasizes that the region needs to address the following areas: energy, transportation, urbanization, water security, biodiversity, oceans, and climate change. The linkage between economic development and environmental protection is definite and it is imperative that both grow in a same direction in Asia.

The complete structural characterization of dehydrodivanillin, an important natural product of interest to the food, cosmetics and aroma industries, has been carried out using multi-dimensional NMR spectroscopic techniques, and its previously $reported^{13}$C-NMR values have been reassigned. Dense and granular thin films of dehydrodivanillin have been grown by sublimation under high vacuum and studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), electrical and optical techniques. The transmittance spectra of the films indicate a wide optical band gap of more than 3 eV. Typical J-V characteristics of Glass/ITO/dehydrodivanillin/Al structure exhibited moderate current densities ${\sim}10^{-4}\;A/cm^2$ at voltages > 25 V with an appreciable SCLC mobility of the order of $10^{-6}\;cm^2$/V-s.

We have synthesized the nanorods of CdS―ZnO composite by chemical method and have investigated their structure, optical and electrical properties by suitable techniques. The X-rays diffraction results prove the co-existence of CdS and ZnO in usual hexagonal structure and no peak corresponding to any intermediate phase has been identified. The above observation has been confirmed by micro-Raman study. The photo-current action spectra of CdS―ZnO nanorods show a significant enhancement of the photo-current due to visible sensitization by surface CdS layer. In an attempt to explore the catalytic activity of CdS―ZnO, the photodegradation of 3,4-dihydroxy benzoic acid has been investigated under visible irradiation from a halogen lamp. The concentration of aqueous solution of 3,4-dihydroxy benzoic acid decreases with increase in the irradiation time which is attributed to photodegradation of the benzoic acid. A possible mechanism for the redox reactions responsible for degradation of the benzoic acid has been suggested.
