      • Two-Stage Flowshop Scheduling with Outsourcing Allowed

        In this paper we study the production-scheduling problem for a two-stage flow shop with outsourcing options. The maintenance of in-house machine and job-related discount for outsourcing cost are considered in model, in which total cost and makespan are regarded as bi-objective for the scheduling problem. Based on the analysis of model, we introduce a concept-packaging to reduce the complexity of problem and then develop heuristic algorithm to solve the problem. Computational experiments using different groups of data are conducted to test the algorithm.

        Positive Association of TEAD1 With Schizophrenia in a Northeast Chinese Han Population

        Objective Schizophrenia is a complex and devastating psychiatric disorder with a strong genetic background. However, much uncertainty still exists about the role of genetic susceptibility in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. TEA domain transcription factor 1 (TEAD1) is a transcription factor associated with neurodevelopment and has modulating effects on various nervous system diseases. In the current study, we performed a case–control association study in a Northeast Chinese Han population to explore the characteristics of pathogenic <i>TEAD1</i> polymorphisms and potential association with schizophrenia.Methods We recruited a total of 721 schizophrenia patients and 1,195 healthy controls in this study. The 9 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the gene region of <i>TEAD1</i> were selected and genotyped.Results The genetic association analyses showed that five SNPs (rs12289262, rs6485989, rs4415740, rs7113256, and rs1866709) were significantly different between schizophrenia patients and healthy controls in allele or/and genotype frequencies. After Bonferroni correction, the association of three SNPs (rs4415740, rs7113256, and rs1866709) with schizophrenia were still evident. Haplotype analysis revealed that two strong linkage disequilibrium blocks (rs6485989-rs4415740-rs7113256 and rs16911710-rs12364619-rs1866709) were globally associated with schizophrenia. Four haplotypes (C-C-C and T-T-T, rs6485989-rs4415740-rs7113256; G-T-A and G-T-G, rs16911710-rs12364619-rs1866709) were significantly different between schizophrenia patients and healthy controls.Conclusion The current findings indicated that the human <i>TEAD1</i> gene has a genetic association with schizophrenia in the Chinese Han population and may act as a susceptibility gene for schizophrenia.

        Synthesis and Characterization of the Intense Red Phosphor AgEu(MoO4)2 for Blue GaN-Based LED Chips

        The intense red-emitting phosphor AgEu(MoO4)2 was prepared by using a sol-gel method. The crystallization process of the precursors was characterized by using a thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The size distribution and the shape of the phosphors were characterized by using a field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE- SEM). The samples obtained by using the sol-gel method had a smaller size, a more regular shape and a narrower particle size distribution than those obtained by using the solid-state method. The photoluminescent excitation spectrum of the AgEu(MoO4)2 phosphor is different from there of other double molybdates AEu(MoO4)2 (A = alkali metal ions) phosphors and its strongest absorption is located at 465-nm. The phosphor AgEu(MoO4)2 shows a strong red emission at 616 nm under excitation of 465 nm blue light, which matches well with commercial blue-light-emitting diodes (LEDs); thus, it is an excellent red phosphor candidate for white LEDs with blue light chips.

        Embedded-Ge source and drain in InGaAs/GaAs dual channel MESFET

        We report the first demonstration of n-type IIIeV metal-semiconductor field-effect transistors (nMESFETs) with IV group material hetero-junction source and drain (S/D) technology. A selective epitaxial growth of germanium (Ge) in the recessed gallium arsenide (GaAs) S/D regions is successfully developed using ultra-high vacuum chemical vapor deposition (UHVCVD) system. The dual channel structure includes an additional 10-nm higher mobility n-In0.2Ga0.8As layer on n-GaAs channel and is introduced to further improve the device performance. The n-MESFET, combining embedded-Ge S/D with In0.2Ga0.8As/GaAs channel, exhibits good transfer properties with a drain current on/off ratio of approximately 103. Due to the small barrier height of Ti/In0.2Ga0.8As Schottky contact, a lattice-matched wide bandgap In0.49Ga0.51P dielectric layer is also integrated into the device architecture to build a higher electron Schottky barrier height (SBH) for gate leakage current reduction. The Ti/In0.49Ga0.51P/n-In0.2Ga0.8As Schottky diode shows a comparable leakage level to Ti/n-GaAs with 2 x 10-2 A/cm2 at a gate voltage of -2.0 V.

        Prebiotic Potential of Xylooligosaccharides Derived from Corn Cobs and Their In Vitro Antioxidant Activity When Combined with Lactobacillus

        In the present work, the in vitro prebiotic activity of xylooligosaccharides (XOS) derived from corn cobs combined with Lactobacillus plantarum, a probiotic microorganism, was determined.These probiotics exhibited different growth characteristics depending on strain specificity. L. plantarum S2 cells were denser and their growth rates were higher when cultured on XOS. Acetate was found to be the major short-chain fatty acid produced as the end-product of fermentation, and its amount varied from 1.50 to 1.78 mg/ml. The antimicrobial activity of XOS combined with L. plantarum S2 was determined against gastrointestinal pathogens. The results showed that XOS proved to be an effective substrate, enhancing antimicrobial activity for L. plantarum S2. In vivo evaluation of the influence of XOS and L. plantarum S2, used both alone and together, on the intestinal microbiota in a mouse model showed that XOS combined with L. plantarum S2 could increase the viable lactobacilli and bifidobacteria in mice feces and decrease the viable Enterococcus, Enterobacter, and Clostridia spp. Furthermore, in the in vitro antioxidant assay, XOS combined with L. plantarum S2 possessed significant 2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl, 2,2’-azino-bis, and superoxide anion radical-scavenging activities, and the combinations showed better antioxidant activity than either XOS or L. plantarum S2 alone.

        Association between Delayed Lactogenesis II and Early Milk Volume among Mothers of Preterm Infants

        Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of delayed lactogenesis Ⅱ on early milk volume in mothers expressing milk for their preterm infants. Methods: 142 mothers with preterm infants participated in a longitudinal cohort study, the milk volumes over 14 days postpartum between mothers with delayed lactogenesis Ⅱ ( 72 hours) and mothers with non-delayed lactogenesis Ⅱ(< 72 hours) were compared using Wilcoxon's rank sum tests. Results: The prevalence of delayed lactogenesisⅡ among mothers of preterm infants was 36.0% (36/100). There existed negative correlations between the onset of lactogenesis Ⅱ and the daily milk volumes( rs ¼ 0.525~0.354, p ¼ .002 ~ p < .001). The milk volumes in every 24-hour of the 14 days postpartum in delayed group were significantly less than that in non-delayed group (p ¼ .002 ~ p < .001). After controlling for the covariates, pregnancy-induced hypertension syndrome, delayed expression initiation, shorter daily sleeping time were found to be the risk factors for delayed lactogenesis Ⅱ. Conclusion: Delayed lactogenesis Ⅱ was associated with lower milk volume in early postpartum period. Women who were at risk for delayed lactogenesis Ⅱ need targeted interventions and additional support during pregnancy and postpartum.

        A Novel 3D Polypseudo-rotaxane Metal-organic Framework Based on a Flexible Bis-pyridyl-bis-amide Ligand

        A novel 3D compound $\{[Cu(L)(H_2O)_4][Cu_2(SIP)_2(L)_2]\}{\cdot}2H_2O$ (1) (L = N,N-bis(4-pyridinecarboxamide)-1,4-butane, SIP = 5-sulfoisophthalate) is hydrothermally synthesized. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that compound 1 is composed of 2D anionic $[Cu_2(SIP)_2(L)_2]_n{^{2n-}}$ double-layers and discrete 1D cationic $[CuL(H_2O)_4]_n{^{2n+}}$ polymeric chains, which represents a rare 3D polypseudo-rotaxane MOF from intercalation of 1D and 2D framework. In addition, the luminescent property and electrochemical behavior of compound 1 have been investigated.

        Neuroprotective Activity of Vitis thunbergii var. taiwaniana Extracts In Vitro and In Vivo

        Vitis thunbergii var. taiwaniana (VTT) is a wild grape native to Taiwan, where it has been used as a folk medicine. In this study, we found that the branch and leaf ethanol extracts of VTT significantly inhibited the inducible nitric oxide (NO) synthase protein expression and NO production in BV2 microglia. Using primary neuronal cells, kainic acid (KA) significantly increased hydrogen peroxide production in a dose-dependent manner. All four ethanol extracts of VTT significantly decreased hydrogen peroxide production. However, only root and branch ethanol extracts were able to prevent the neuronal cell death induced by KA in vitro. In the animal study, administration of all four plant part extracts of VTT delayed the onset of seizure and decreased the hippocampus neuronal cell loss, and the neuroprotective activity could be ranked as follows: branchleaf>root>trunk. The results suggest that VTT extracts have a potential to prevent neurodegeneration through the antioxidative activity by their ability to inhibit NO and hydrogen peroxide production.

        Alpinate Oxyphyllae Fructus Inhibits IGFII-Related Signaling Pathway to Attenuate Ang II-Induced Pathological Hypertrophy in H9c2 Cardiomyoblasts

        Angiotensin II (Ang II) is a very important cardiovascular disease inducer and may cause cardiac pathological hypertrophy and remodeling. We evaluated a Chinese traditional medicine, alpinate oxyphyllae fructus (AOF), for therapeutic efficacy for treating Ang II-induced cardiac hypertrophy. AOF has been used to treat patients with various symptoms accompanying hypertension and cerebrovascular disorders in Korea. We investigated its protective effect against Ang II-induced cytoskeletal change and hypertrophy in H9c2 cells. The results showed that treating cells with Ang II resulted in pathological hypertrophy, such as increased expression of transcription factors NFAT-3/p-NFAT-3, hypertrophic response genes (atrial natriuretic peptide [ANP] and b-type natriuretic peptide [BNP]), and Gαq down-stream effectors (PLCβ3 and calcineurin). Pretreatment with AOF (60–100 μg/mL) led to significantly reduced hypertrophy. We also found that AOF pretreatment significantly suppressed the cardiac remodeling proteins, metalloproteinase (MMP9 and MMP2), and plasminogen activator, induced by Ang II challenge. In conclusion, we provide evidence that AOF protects against Ang II-induced pathological hypertrophy by specifically inhibiting the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) II/IIR-related signaling pathway in H9c2 cells. AOF might be a candidate for cardiac hypertrophy and ventricular remodeling prevention in chronic cardiovascular diseases.
