        Serial Frozen Fecal Microbiota Transplantation in the Treatment of Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-obstruction: A Preliminary Study

        Background/Aims Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) is a serious, life-threatening motility disorder that is often related to bacterial overgrowth. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) results in restoration of the normal intestinal microbial community structure. We investigated the efficacy of FMT in the treatment of CIPO patients. Methods Nine patients (age 18-53 years) with CIPO were enrolled in this prospective, open-label study. Patients received FMT for 6 consecutive days through nasojejunal (NJ) tubes and were followed up for 8 weeks after treatment. We evaluated the rate of clinical improvement and remission, feeding tolerance of enteral nutrition, and CT imaging scores of intestinal obstructions. Lactulose hydrogen breath tests were performed before FMT and 8 weeks after FMT to evaluate for the presence small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). Results FMT significantly alleviated bloating symptoms, and symptoms of pain were relieved 2 weeks after FMT. Enteral nutrition administered through a NJ tube after FMT was well-tolerated by 66.7% (6/9) of patients. CT scores of intestinal obstructions were significantly reduced after FMT (P = 0.014). SIBO was eliminated in 71.0% (5/7) of patients. Conclusions This pilot study demonstrated the safety of using FMT. FMT may relieve symptoms in selected patients with CIPO. FMT may also improve patient tolerance of enteral nutrition delivered via a NJ tube. (J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2017;23:289-297)

        Impact of ejaculation upon effect of acupuncture on chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome: Secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial

        Background: Acupuncture can improve chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). Ejaculation frequencies might impact the conditions of CP/CPPS. The present study aimed to explore the impact of different ejaculation frequencies on the effect of acupuncture among men with CP/CPPS. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of the data from a multicenter, randomized, clinical trial. Eligible participants were patients with moderate to severe CP/CPPS, who had taken 8-week acupuncture treatment, and followed until week 32. Participants fell into the category of 0–3, 4–7, or at least 8 according to their monthly ejaculation frequencies reported at baseline. The primary outcome was the proportion of responders, defined as men who reported at least 6 points reduction from baseline in the National Institute of Health-Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIHsingle bondCPSI) total score at weeks 8 and 32. Results: 214 participants were included in this secondary analysis, of whom 42 reported a monthly ejaculation frequency of 0–3, 89 reported a frequency of 4–7, and 83 reported a frequency of at least 8. At week 8, 52.20% participants with an ejaculation frequency of 0–3 responded to the acupuncture treatment, 65.38% participants with a frequency of 4–7 responded, and 63.09% participants with a frequency of at least 8 responded. At week 32, 56.14%, 59.57%, and 68.36% participants responded in the three groups, respectively. No significant differences were observed between three groups (all P>0.05). Conclusion: Acupuncture can improve symptoms of CP/CPPS, regardless of ejaculation frequencies. Ejaculation frequencies may not affect the efficacy of acupuncture on CP/CPPS among Chinese men.       • Structural Directed Growth of Ultrathin Parallel Birnessite on β-MnO<sub>2</sub> for High-Performance Asymmetric Supercapacitors

        <P>Two-dimensional birnessite has attracted attention for electrochemical energy storage because of the presence of redox active Mn<SUP>4+</SUP>/Mn<SUP>3+</SUP> ions and spacious interlayer channels available for ions diffusion. However, current strategies are largely limited to enhancing the electrical conductivity of birnessite. One key limitation affecting the electrochemical properties of birnessite is the poor utilization of the MnO<SUB>6</SUB> unit. Here, we assemble β-MnO<SUB>2</SUB>/birnessite core–shell structure that exploits the exposed crystal face of β-MnO<SUB>2</SUB> as the core and ultrathin birnessite sheets that have the structure advantage to enhance the utilization efficiency of the Mn from the bulk. Our birnessite that has sheets parallel to each other is found to have unusual crystal structure with interlayer spacing, Mn(III)/Mn(IV) ratio and the content of the balancing cations differing from that of the common birnessite. The substrate directed growth mechanism is carefully investigated. The as-prepared core–shell nanostructures enhance the exposed surface area of birnessite and achieve high electrochemical performances (for example, 657 F g<SUP>–1</SUP> in 1 M Na<SUB>2</SUB>SO<SUB>4</SUB> electrolyte based on the weight of parallel birnessite) and excellent rate capability over a potential window of up to 1.2 V. This strategy opens avenues for fundamental studies of birnessite and its properties and suggests the possibility of its use in energy storage and other applications.         Synthesis of Montmorillonite/Poly(acrylic acid-co-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid) Superabsorbent Composite and the Study of its Adsorption

        A novel superabsorbent composite was prepared by intercalation polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) in the presence of montmorillonite (MMT), using ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator and $N,N'$-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a cross linker. The superabsorbent composite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Maximum absorbency of the composite in distilled water and 0.9% sodium chloride solution was 722 and 108 g/g, respectively. The composite was used for removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. Maximum amount of adsorption for $Ni^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ was 211.0, 159.6 and 1646.0 mg/g, respectively, and the adsorption was in accordance with both Langmuir and Freundlich model. The composite could be regenerated and reused in wastewater treatment.

      • Novel integrative soft computing for daily pan evaporation modeling

        Regarding the high significance of correct pan evaporation modeling, this study introduces two novel neurometaheuristic approaches to improve the accuracy of prediction for this parameter. Vortex search algorithms (VSA), sunflower optimization (SFO), and stochastic fractal search (SFS) are integrated with a multilayer perceptron neural network to create the VSA-MLPNN, SFO-MLPNN, and SFS-MLPNN hybrids. The climate data of Arcata-Eureka station (operated by the US environmental protection agency) belonging to the years 1986-1989 and the year 1990 are used for training and testing the models, respectively. Trying different configurations revealed that the best performance of the VSA, SFO, and SFS is obtained for the population size of 400, 300, and 100, respectively. The results were compared with a conventionally trained MLPNN to examine the effect of the metaheuristic algorithms. Overall, all four models presented a very reliable simulation. However, the SFS-MLPNN (mean absolute error, MAE = 0.0997 and Pearson correlation coefficient, R<sub>P</sub> = 0.9957) was the most accurate model, followed by the VSA-MLPNN (MAE = 0.1058 and R<sub>P</sub> = 0.9945), conventional MLPNN (MAE = 0.1062 and R<sub>P</sub> = 0.9944), and SFO-MLPNN (MAE = 0.1305 and RP = 0.9914). The findings indicated that employing the VSA and SFS results in improving the accuracy of the neural network in the prediction of pan evaporation. Hence, the suggested models are recommended for future practical applications.

      • Long-circulating siRNA nanoparticles for validating Prohibitin1-targeted non-small cell lung cancer treatment

        <P><B>Significance</B></P><P>This study developed a new generation lipid–polymer hybrid nanoparticle platform for effective systemic delivery of small interfering RNA (siRNA) to tumors, which represents a challenging hurdle for the widespread application of RNA interference (RNAi) in cancer research and therapy. With promising in vivo features such as long blood circulation, high tumor accumulation, and effective gene silencing, the hybrid siRNA nanoparticles were successfully used to reveal and validate a putative therapeutic target, Prohibitin1 (PHB1), in non-small cell lung cancer treatment. In vivo antitumor efficacy results and human tissue microarray analysis further suggested the feasibility of utilizing PHB1 siRNA nanoparticles as a novel therapeutic agent. This hybrid RNAi nanoparticle platform may serve as a valuable tool for validating potential cancer targets and developing new cancer therapies.</P><P>RNA interference (RNAi) represents a promising strategy for identification and validation of putative therapeutic targets and for treatment of a myriad of important human diseases including cancer. However, the effective systemic in vivo delivery of small interfering RNA (siRNA) to tumors remains a formidable challenge. Using a robust self-assembly strategy, we develop a unique nanoparticle (NP) platform composed of a solid polymer/cationic lipid hybrid core and a lipid-poly(ethylene glycol) (lipid-PEG) shell for systemic siRNA delivery. The new generation lipid–polymer hybrid NPs are small and uniform, and can efficiently encapsulate siRNA and control its sustained release. They exhibit long blood circulation (<I>t</I><SUB>1/2</SUB> ∼8 h), high tumor accumulation, effective gene silencing, and negligible in vivo side effects. With this RNAi NP, we delineate and validate the therapeutic role of Prohibitin1 (PHB1), a target protein that has not been systemically evaluated in vivo due to the lack of specific and effective inhibitors, in treating non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) as evidenced by the drastic inhibition of tumor growth upon PHB1 silencing. Human tissue microarray analysis also reveals that high PHB1 tumor expression is associated with poorer overall survival in patients with NSCLC, further suggesting PHB1 as a therapeutic target. We expect this long-circulating RNAi NP platform to be of high interest for validating potential cancer targets in vivo and for the development of new cancer therapies.</P>

        Linking empowering leadership to innovative behavior in professional learning communities: the role of psychological empowerment and team psychological safety

        This study investigates the mediating role of teachers’ psychological empowerment and the moderating role of team psychological safety in the relationship between empowering leadership and teachers’ innovative behavior in teaching and research groups (TR groups) as professional learning communities. In total, 507 teachers from 114 TR groups in China participated in this study. The multilevel model results show that empowering leadership improves teachers’ innovative behavior by increasing teachers’ psychological empowerment, which is not influenced by team psychological safety. A supplementary analysis shows that the relationship between team psychological safety and teachers’ innovative behavior is also mediated by psychological empowerment.
