        The Relatedness Between Graphene Oxide Lateral Size and the Mechanical Properties of Calcium Alginate Composite Fibers

        It is widely recognized that combining alginate with graphene oxide (GO) is an effective method in improving the propertiesof alginate fiber. However, how the lateral size of GO influences the properties of the composite fiber is still unclear. Inthis work, GO was separated into four kinds of different lateral sizes with the assistance of centrifugation and high-powerultrasound. The tensile strength of calcium alginate/graphene oxide (CaAlg/GO) composite fiber increased with the lateralsize of GO. Surprisingly, the combination of large and small GO performed the superior reinforcement effect. The tensilestrength and Young’s modulus increased from 407.66 MPa and 13.87 GPa to 556.97 MPa and 20.57 GPa, respectively. Inaddition, the water absorption ability of CaAlg/GO composite fiber reduced with the decreasing of the lateral size of GO. With significantly improved mechanical properties and fine biocompatibility, the CaAlg/GO composite fibers may havepotential applications in the biotechnological, biomedical, and tissue engineering areas.

        Chirality detection of amino acid enantiomers by organic electrochemical transistor

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Chiral recognition of α-amino acids is attracting increasing interest due to the importance of α-amino acids in protein metabolism as well as in food products and pharmaceuticals. Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) with gate electrodes modified with molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) films were fabricated and successfully used as highly selective and sensitive chiral recognition biosensors for <SMALL>D/L</SMALL>-tryptophan (<SMALL>D</SMALL> <SMALL>/</SMALL> <SMALL>L</SMALL>-Trp) and <SMALL>D/L</SMALL>-tyrosine (<SMALL>D</SMALL> <SMALL>/</SMALL> <SMALL>L</SMALL>-Tyr). The MIP films, which can specifically recognize and has an electrocatalytic effect on the oxidation of Trp and Tyr, together with the amplification function of an OECT, provide a highly sensitive and selective OECT biosensor. The sensor showed a linear response range for <SMALL>L</SMALL>-Trp and <SMALL>L</SMALL>-Tyr from 300 nM to 10 μM with a sensitivity of 3.19 and 3.64 μA/μM, respectivity. And the detection limit for <SMALL>L</SMALL>-Trp and <SMALL>L</SMALL>-Tyr is of 2 nM and 30 nM (S/N > 3). The selectivity factors of <SMALL>L</SMALL>-Trp, <SMALL>D</SMALL>-Trp, <SMALL>L</SMALL>-Tyr and <SMALL>D</SMALL>-Tyr to their enantiomers are 11.6, 3.5, 14.5 and 2.6, respectively.         Factors Influencing the Quality of Standardized Treatment for Patients with Post–Cardiac Arrest Syndrome

        Background and Objectives: For the present study, we investigated the factors that influence the quality of standardized treatment for patients with post–cardiac arrest syndrome (PCAS) to improve the quality of PCAS treatment. Subjects and Methods: We collected data on patients with cardiac arrest (CA) who were admitted to the intensive care units (ICUs) of 11 hospitals-Class II Grade A or above-in Suzhou from January to October 2013. Indexes of standardized treatment were observed within 72 hrs of CA. We analyzed monitoring techniques, monitoring frequency, ICU human and material resources, and intensivists’ knowledge of PCAS treatment to explore how those factors affected the management of patients with PCAS. Results: The bed/nurse ratio and the frequency with which core temperature was recorded correlated closely with the implementation of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) within 6 hrs of CA. The bed/doctor ratio and intensivists’ knowledge about PCAS correlated closely with high-quality blood glucose control within 6 hrs of CA. Furthermore, the frequency with which core temperature was recorded was an independent factor influencing the quality of TH implementation, and the number times blood gas was analyzed was an independent factor influencing how well partial pressure of carbon dioxide was kept within the normal range in the 6 hrs after CA. Conclusion: The frequency of core temperature measurements and the number of times blood gas is analyzed are the most important factors influencing the quality of standardized treatment for patients with PCAS.

      • An LDPC-COFDM based High Speed Mobile Wireless Communication System

        Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (COFDM) is very well matched to the terrestrial channel, being able to cope with severe multi-path and the presence of co-channel narrowband interference. This paper presents an image and video transmission scheme based on COFDM for high speed mobile wireless communication system in which a good Rate-Compatible Low-Density Parity-Check codes structure is applied, this structure can provide a large range of supporting rates, and provide very good error performance, low decoding latency and low computational complexity at the decoder. The test experiment was made in television live transmitting to validate the designed system. The results show that our COFDM-based mobile wireless digital multimedia broadcasting system can transmit high definition image and video when it being equipped for 486Kilometre/Hour’s high speed rail, The Channel Bit Error Rate <2.0E-4 and Carrier to noise ratio(C/N) >30dB when the output power at 30dBm.

        Identification of two rare mutations c.1318G>A and c.6438+2T>G in a Chinese DMD family as genetic markers

        Background Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a fatal X-linked recessive disorder with no efective treatment, which underscores the importance of avoiding the birth of children with DMD by identifying pathogenic mutations and obtaining an accurate prenatal diagnosis. Objective The objective of this study was to analyze the genetic defect of a Chinese family where all male patients have died of DMD. Methods Multiplex ligation dependent probe analysis (MLPA) and next-generation sequencing (NGS) were employed to detect DMD mutations. The candidate mutations were then validated by Sanger sequencing. In vitro splicing assay was further conducted to examine the potential efect of the novel DMD splice site mutation on splicing. Results We found that two rare DMD mutations c.1318G>A and c.6438+2T>G passed from generation to generation among female carriers and they may be used as genetic markers in the Chinese DMD family. In vitro splicing assay further revealed that the novel classical splice site mutation c.6438+2T>G gave rise to a new donor splice site, which resulted in a frame shift of the transcripts and a premature termination at position 2159 in exon 45 (p.Y2144Nfs*16). Conclusion We found that two co-inherited mutations passed from generation to generation in female carriers and they may be used as genetic markers in the Chinese DMD family. Our fndings not only expanded the DMD mutation spectrum, but also provided an important basis for identifying of female carriers and avoiding the birth of afected male children in this DMD family.

        Biodegradation of C5-C8 Fatty Acids and Production of Aroma Volatiles by Myroides sp. ZB35 Isolated from Activated Sludge

        In the effluents of a biologically treated wastewater from aheavy oil-refining plant, C5-C8 fatty acids including pentanoicacid, hexanoic acid, heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, and2-methylbutanoic acid are often detected. As these residualfatty acids can cause further air and water pollution, a newMyroides isolate ZB35 from activated sludge was explored todegrade these C5-C8 fatty acids in this study. It was foundthat the biodegradation process involved a lag phase thatbecame prolonged with increasing acyl chain length whenthe fatty acids were individually fed to this strain. However,when fed as a mixture, the ones with longer acyl chains werefound to become more quickly assimilated. The branched 2-methylbutanoic acid was always the last one to be depletedamong the five fatty acids under both conditions. Metaboliteanalysis revealed one possible origin of short chain fatty acidsin the biologically treated wastewater. Aroma volatiles including2-methylbutyl isovalerate, isoamyl 2-methylbutanoate,isoamyl isovalerate, and 2-methylbutyl 2-methylbutanoatewere subsequently identified from ZB35 extracts, linking thesource of the fruity odor to these esters excreted by Myroidesspecies. To our best knowledge, this is the first finding of thesearoma esters in bacteria. From a biotechnological viewpoint,this study has revealed the potential of Myroides species asa promising source of aroma esters attractive for food andfragrance industries.

      • DC component Mitigation Utilizing BP-PI and Repetitive Control in Transformless Grid-Connected Inverters

        Transformerless grid-connected inverters, due to their advantages in high efficiency, small volume and light weight, gain more research and interest in recent years. Due to the asymmetrical driving signal in pulse-width-modulation (PWM) caused by time-delay, zero-drift of the current sensors and imparities of the power transistors, etc. Output of the grid current contains dc component. As a result, power quality of the grid is degraded. In this paper, a dc component suppression scheme with recursive integral PI controller are introduced, according to the change tendency of tracking error, the coefficients of PI controller are regulated by BP neural network in real time, and the global optimization requirements are met. Sliding-Window-Double-Iteration-Method (SWDIM) is utilized for fast dc current extraction. Simulation results from a 2-kW three-phase grid-connected inverter confirm the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

      • Numerator-Denominator Model Based H<SUB>∞</SUB> Robust Control for LCL Filter-Based Grid-Connected Inverters under Weak Grid Conditions

        In the grid-connected inverter controller system, conventional PI or PR controller decrease their lowfrequency gain and bandwidth to maintain the stability of the system. However, this degrades the disturbance rejection and current tracking capability. To solve this problem, this paper gives an H∞ robust control scheme based on Numerator Denominator Model method, which has the advantages of simplified current controller design procedure, can place the poles of closed-loop system at the desired place. By properly selecting the weight function, the proposed control scheme can not only achieve good robustness in disturbance rejection capability, but also gives a straight forward to design the dynamic performance. Simulation and experimental comparison results between PR and H∞ controller is demonstrated. The results prove that the proposed control scheme shows obviously improvements on the robustness of inverter and meanwhile does not lose advantages on the dynamic performance.

        Effects of Ti and La Additions on the Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of B-Refined and Sr-Modified Al–11Si Alloys

        The effects of Ti and La additions on the microstructures and mechanical properties of B-refined and Sr-modifi ed Al–11Sialloys were investigated in the present work. The interactions among Ti, La, B and Sr elements were discussed employingmicrostructure observation, thermal analysis and tensile test, respectively. It was found that the addition of 0.05 wt% Binduces a transformation of eutectic Si from fi nely fi brous to coarsely plate-like morphology in the Al–11Si alloy with 0.02wt%Sr modifi cation, owing to the poisoning of IIT mechanism, and the eutectic Si grows only with TPRE mechanism. Bothtitanium and lanthanum can neutralize the co-poisoning effect between Sr and B in the Al–11Si alloy, but the neutralizingeffect of La is dependent on the addition sequence. The combinative addition of La and B elements promotes the effectiverefi nement of α-Al grains, but an inhomogeneous modifi cation of eutectic Si phases is also observed, leading to a slightlydecrease in the elongation.
