Left ventricular (LV) thrombi may be caused by various conditions, particularly myocardial infarction. In most cases, LV thrombus occurs in patients with a significantly reduced ejection fraction. A LV thrombus is extremely rare in patients with normal LV function. We report a case of LV thrombus initially detected on transthoracic echocardiography and confirmed using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in a patient with normal LV wall motion. We highlight the rarity of this condition and the usefulness of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of LV thrombus.

Background: Phototrichogram analysis of normal scalp hair characteristics in Asian populations is not well characterized. Objectives: To investigate the normal hair characteristics of South Koreans using a phototrichogram. Methods: We enrolled 674 males and 683 females between the ages of 10 and 69. Hair density, thickness and the white hair percentage were measured via phototrichogram. Six scalp sites, including front, top, the peak between top and back, back, and the right and left sides were targeted. Results: The mean hair density, hair thickness, and the white hair percentage were not significantly different between genders at any scalp site. The mean hair density and thickness were significantly different according to scalp sites. Hair density declined with age, especially at the peak between top and back. Males and females showed different patterns of aging in hair density. Hair thickness changed little with age. But, mean hair thickness generally tended to increase until the 20s, reach a plateau between the 20s and 50s, and decrease after the 50s. The mean white hair percentages were 1.84 ± 4.24% in males and 1.66 ± 4.21% in females. The mean white hair percentages were significantly increased in subjects greater than 40 years of age. Conclusion: We described the normal characteristics and aging patterns of scalp hair in a Korean population.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Lignocellulosic biomass is an abundant renewable energy source that can be converted into various liquid fuels <I>via</I> thermochemical processes such as pyrolysis. Pyrolysis is a thermal decomposition method, in which solid biomass are thermally depolymerized to liquid fuel called bio-oil or pyrolysis oil. However, the low quality of pyrolysis oil caused by its high oxygen content necessitates further catalytic upgrading to increase the content of oxygen-free compounds, such as aromatic hydrocarbons. Among the three different types of lignocellulosic biomass components (hemicellulose, lignin, and cellulose), lignin is the most difficult fraction to be pyrolyzed because of its highly recalcitrant structure for depolymerization, forming a char as a main product. The catalytic conversion of lignin-derived pyrolyzates is also more difficult than that of furans and levoglucosan which are the main pyrolysis products of hemicellulose and cellulose. Hence, the main purpose of this study was to develop a bench-scale catalytic pyrolysis process using a tandem catalyst (both <I>in-situ</I> and <I>ex-situ</I> catalysis mode) for an efficient pyrolysis and subsequent upgrading of lignin components. While HZSM-5 was employed as an <I>ex-situ</I> catalyst for its excellent aromatization efficiency, the potential of the low-cost additives of bentonite, olivine, and spent FCC as <I>in-situ</I> catalysts in the Kraft lignin pyrolysis at 500 °C was investigated. The effects of these <I>in-situ</I> catalysts on the product selectivity were studied; bentonite resulted in higher selectivity to aromatic hydrocarbons compared to olivine and spent FCC. The reusability of HZSM-5 (with and without regeneration) was examined in the pyrolysis of lignin mixed with the <I>in-situ</I> catalysts of bentonite, olivine, and spent FCC. In the case of using bentonite and spent FCC as <I>in-situ</I> catalysts, there were no obvious changes in the activity of HZSM-5 after regeneration, whereas using olivine as <I>in-situ</I> catalyst resulted in a remarkable decrease in the activity of HZSM-5 after regeneration.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Production of aromatic hydrocarbons from bench-scale catalytic pyrolysis of lignin. </LI> <LI> Combined <I>in-situ</I> and <I>ex-situ</I> pyrolysis configurations. </LI> <LI> <I>In-situ</I> catalysts of bentonite, olivine and spent FCC; <I>ex-situ</I> catalyst of HZSM-5. </LI> <LI> Maximum selectivity to aromatic hydrocarbons using bentonite catalyst. </LI> </UL> </P>
Phylogenetic Contributions of Partial 26S rDNA Sequences to the Tribe Helleboreae (Ranunculaceae)

Monophyly and intergeneric relationships of the tribe Helleboreae, sensu Tamura, and related genera were studied using a 1,100-bp segment at the 5'end of the 26S ribosomal RNA gene. Forty-one OTUs, including eight species of the Helleboreae, were either directly sequenced or obtained from previous publications. Data were analyzed using distance and discrete character methods to infer phylogenetic relationships among the included taxa. The inferred phylogeny did not support monophyly of either Helleboreae or Cimicifugeae whose members were intermixed in our inferred phylogeny. This result is congruent with our previous study, which recommended against finely subdividing, suprageneric higher taxa within the R-chromosome group (subfamily Ranuncluloideae, sensu lato) until more molecular data were accumulated. Our data convincingly suggest the presence of the following three monophyletic groups: the Cimicifuga group (the clade of Actaea, Cimicifuga, Souliea, Eranthis, Anemonopsis, and Beesia), the Trollius group (the clade of Trollius, Megaleranthis, Adonis), and a clade including Anemonopsis and Beesia. Our data also suggest that Trollius and Megaleranthis might be congeners and Eranthis a paraphyletic group.
An Efficient Block Cipher Implementation on Many-Core Graphics Processing Units

This paper presents a study on a high-performance design for a block cipher algorithm implemented on modern many-core graphics processing units (GPUs). The recent emergence of VLSI technology makes it feasible to fabricate multiple processing cores on a single chip and enables general-purpose computation on a GPU (GPGPU). The GPU strategy offers significant performance improvements for all-purpose computation and can be used to support a broad variety of applications, including cryptography. We have proposed an efficient implementation of the encryption/decryption operations of a block cipher algorithm, SEED, on off-the-shelf NVIDIA many-core graphics processors. In a thorough experiment, we achieved high performance that is capable of supporting a high network speed of up to 9.5 Gbps on an NVIDIA GTX285 system (which has 240 processing cores). Our implementation provides up to 4.75 times higher performance in terms of encoding and decoding throughput as compared to the Intel 8-core system.

In teaching statistics in the secondary school, most math teachers do it and students enjoy it well before 11th grade. But, both of teachers and students feel statistics hard at 11th grade, which has been contained permutations, combinations, random variables, probability distributions, hypotheses and tests for normal distribution. In this study, we explore the efficient teaching methods of statistics for math teachers and also find many students enjoying it.
Testing the Monday Effect using High-frequency Intraday Returns: A Spatial Dominance Approach

This paper employs a new testing procedure for detecting the presence of Monday effects using high-frequency intraday data. Our approach to test the Monday effect is based on spatial dominance, which enables us to analyze the expected sum of instantaneous utilities during trading hours by considering the intraday patterns of returns. The testing of the methods used in previous studies compares the expected utilities only at a specific time, usually market closing time. Empirical results from our tests provide strong evidence of the Monday effect for the 1983 to 1987 period. We also find that the Monday effect is driven by large negative returns accrued during early Monday mornings, The conventional analyses for the Monday effect, such as regression analysis and stochastic dominance, cannot provide strong evidence of the Monday effect for the same period because these testing methods do not consider the return behavior during Monday mornings.

The aim of this study was to know whether leaf nitrate can be a substitute of total leaf N to justify plant N status and how nitrate influences macro elements uptake and physiological parameters of tomato plants under different nitrogen levels. Leaf nitrate content decreased in low N, while showed similar value with the control in high N, ranging from 55 to $70mg\;g^{-1}$. Differences in nitrate supply led to nitrate-dependent increases in macro elements, particularly cations, while gradual decrease in P. Physiological parameters, photosynthesis rates and antioxidants, greatly responded in N deficient conditions rather than high N, which didn't show any significant differences compared the control. Considering nitrogen forms and physiological parameters, total-N in tomato plants represented positive relation with growth (shoot dry weight), nitrate and $CO_2$ assimilation, whereas negative relation with lipid peroxidation.
