Flexural strength of circular concrete-filled tubes
Lee, Minsun,Kang, Thomas H.-K. Techno-Press 2016 Advances in computational design Vol.1 No.4
The flexural strength of circular concrete-filled tubes (CCFT) can be estimated by several codes such as ACI, AISC, and Eurocode 4. In AISC and Eurocode, two methods are recommended, which are the strain compatibility method (SCM) and the plastic stress distribution method (PSDM). The SCM of AISC is almost the same as the SCM of the ACI method, while the SCM of Eurocode is similar to the ACI method. Only the assumption of the compressive stress of concrete is different. The PSDM of Eurocode approach is also similar to the PSDM of AISC, but they have different definitions of material strength. The PSDM of AISC is relatively easier to use, because AISC provides closed-form equations for calculating the flexural strength. However, due to the complexity of calculation of circular shapes, it is quite difficult to determine the flexural strength of CCFT following other methods. Furthermore, all these methods give different estimations. In this study, an effort is made to review and compare the codes to identify their differences. The study also develops a computing program for the flexural strength of circular concrete filled tubes under pure bending that is in accordance with the codes. Finally, the developed computing algorithm, which is programmed in MATLAB, is used to generate design aid graphs for various steel grades and a variety of strengths of steel and concrete. These design aid graphs for CCFT beams can be used as a preliminary design tool.

Biocidal products are used for multiple kinds of purposes in home environments. Biocidal active substances are used for personal hygiene, surface disinfection, pest control, and chemical preservation. Despite the wide domestic consumption of repellents for pest control, little is known about exposure and risk in home environments. Empenthrin and naphthalene are commonly used in repellents and insecticides, which are mostly cassette types placed in wardrobes or urinals. In this study, authority reports such as EU-BPR Assessment US-EPA RED reports were reviewed and multi-route exposure and risk assessments were conducted for the consumption of repellents containing empenthrin and naphthalene among biocidal products. Exposure assessments were conducted for infants, children, and adults, assuming exposure to the products during installation and through indoor occupants after installation. Exposure factors and algorithms were considered as mentioned in the legal notices of the Chemical Product Safety Act of Korea and Korean Exposure Factors Handbook for Children. Exposures by multi-pathways(dermal, inhalation, and oral routes) were estimated, the hazard of the active components was conducted, and risk assessment with products’ actual content was evaluated.
Development and Validation of a Multidimensional Measure of Positive Body Image
Lee, Minsun,Lee, Hyun-Hwa The Korean Society of Clothing and Textiles 2022 한국의류학회지 Vol.46 No.4
Current studies validate the Body Positive Scale (BP Scale) as a self-assessment instrument that captures four dimensions of the positive body image construct. We developed and evaluated a 17-item BP Scale using two focus group interviews and four independent samples (n = 1,379) of Korean women who completed online survey questionnaires. We generated an initial pool of items via literature review, content validation with experts, and focus group interviews, subsequently refining the items through exploratory analysis (Study 1). We confirmed the BP Scale's underlying dimensions with young Korean female samples (Study 2, Study 4) and with a community sample (Study 3). We also examined the construct validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability over a six-week interval. Overall, the results supported that the four-factor BP Scale demonstrates adequate validity and reliability in measuring positive body image among Korean women. The BP Scale provides a method for researchers and practitioners to understand and assess individuals' positive body image in a multifaceted manner.
The Effects of Exploitation and Exploration on the Firm Innovation Performance in Emerging Economies
Minsun Lee,Jihye Jeong,Dae-il Nam 한국국제경영학회 2020 國際經營硏究 Vol.31 No.1
This study empirically analyzes the effects of exploitation and exploration on the innovation performance of emerging companies. We assumed that R&D expenditures or outsourcing production are positively associated with the level of innovation of the firm. The study conducted an analysis based on World Bank data collected from 2008 to 2009 for 1,555 companies in 11 emerging countries. As a result, firms in many emerging economies with insufficient resources and in low-tech manufacturing industries have shown that exploratory innovation activities, represented by investments in R&D expenditure, are still critical to achieving superior performance in new product production. On the other hand, exploitative activities through outsourcing did not have a significant impact on firms’ innovation performance. Through the results of this analysis, this study suggests that exploratory activities are meaningful in emerging countries to increase their innovation performance.
