Effect of sodium silicate on early growth stages of wheat under drought stress

Wheat yield is decreasing due to climate change, and a method to prevent decreasing yield during drought stress is desirable. In this study, wheat cultivars (Koso and Jokyung) were treated with 15% polyethylene glycol-6000 (PEG) and PEG + Si solution (6.5, 8.7, 13.1 and 26.1 mM). The effect of Si treatment on the alleviation of drought stress was measured using the germination test, shoot relative water content (RWC), seedling stage observation, and quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The results of root/shoot length ratio and shoot length ratio showed that Si treatment induced the alleviation of drought stress in Jokyung cultivar. The result of qRT-PCR showed the alleviation of drought stress in Koso cultivar. In addition, the results with shoot RWC and seedling stage observation showed that the alleviation effects of Si treatment was observed with both Koso and Jokyung cultivar at the high concentration of Si (26.1 mM). All these results suggest that Si treatment at a high concentration could be employed to alleviate drought stress in wheat.

A multiresidue analytical method using LC-MS/MS was developed for insecticides perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in water samples with the simultaneous SPE method. The ranges of recoveries were 95.0~117.2% (Insecticides), 19.7~135.0% (PFCs), and 72.5~86.4%(BFRs) with coefficients of variation of less than 15%. Method detection limit (MDLs) of insecticides, PFCs, and BFRs were 3.0~3.7 ng/L, 0.3~7.1 ng/L, and 5.1~11.7 ng/L, respectively while limit of quantifications (LOQs) were 9.0~11.0 ng/L (insecticides), 0.9~21.4 ng/L (PFCs), and 15.4~35.0 ng/L (BFRs). For understanding the background levels of insecticides, PFCs, and BFRs in the river water, those compounds were monitored in Geum river main stream, So-ok stream, and Daechung Lake sites (Chu-dong, Mun-ui, and Dam) every month (March to December) utilizing the developed method. The compounds of the highest detection frequency were PFOA, PFHxA, PFHpA and dinotefuran (insecticide), whereas BFRs were detected only in March and December (So-ok and Dam). In conclusion, the trends were not observed on periodical and spatial characteristics and the background levels were secured for insecticides, PFCs, and BFRs in Geum river basin.

The single residue analytical method was developed for determining fungicide pencycuron residues in various agricultural commodities with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Pencycuron residue was extracted with acetone from representative crops such as Korean cabbage, apple, brown rice and green pepper. After ethyl acetate/n-hexane partition and subsequent clean-up with silica gel chromatography, pencycuron residue was quantified by reversed phase HPLC with UV detection at 240 nm. The suspected residue of pencycuron was confirmed using selected-ion monitoring (SIM) LC/mass spectrometry (MS). Instrumental limit of quantitation (ILOQ) and method LOQ (MLOQ) were set at 2 ng and 0.02 mg/kg, respectively. Overall recoveries of pencycuron from different crop samples fortified at three levels (MLOQ, 10MLOQ, 100MLOQ) were 72~108%. This proposed method could be useful as official analytical method for quantification of pencycuron residues in agricultural commodities.

<P>The detection of fluorescent probes for biomolecules and control of the function of a complex through a recognition process have not been investigated intensively. A fluorescent peptidyl probe (1) based on the self-assembly stimulated by heparin was synthesized. The fluorescent probe with an aggregation-induced emission fluorophore formed a self assembling complex with heparin, resulting in a sensitive and selective turn-on response to heparin compared to its biological competitors. The detection limits for heparin were measured to be 138.0 pM (R-2 = 0.976) in aqueous solution and 2.6 nM (R-2 = 0.996) in aqueous solution containing human serum. Nanosized aggregates formed through the self-assembly of the complex showed potent resistance against the heparin-digestive enzyme. The dual role of the probe for the detection of heparin and the inhibition of heparinase-mediated digestion through the recognition process was used for the real-time monitoring of the enzyme activity of heparinase for the digestion of heparin. Furthermore, the dual role of the probe was applied for the detection of the oversulfated chondroitin sulfate contaminant in heparin.</P>

<P><B>Aims</B></P><P>To analyse clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of osteosarcoma that developed in survivors of bilateral retinoblastoma.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Three institutions participated in this retrospective study. Among survivors of bilateral retinoblastoma who were diagnosed and treated between 1995 and 2012, 8 cases (4 male, 4 female) of osteosarcoma were identified. Medical records were thoroughly reviewed.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Median age at diagnosis of bilateral retinoblastoma was 8.5 months (range 1.4–18.4 months). Treatment modalities for retinoblastoma were: enucleation+chemotherapy+radiotherapy (n=6); chemotherapy combined with focal therapy (n=1); and chemotherapy+radiotherapy (n=1). Median radiotherapy dose was 46.5 Gy (range 45–54 Gy). Median age at diagnosis of osteosarcoma was 8.9 years (range 5.4–20.3 years). Median interval between retinoblastoma and osteosarcoma was 8.2 years (range 5.0–20.0 years). Tumour locations were femur (n=5), tibia (n=1), mandible (n=1), and nasal cavity (n=1). Two patients presented with lung metastasis. Seven patients received multimodal treatment, and treatment was refused in 1 patient. After diagnosis of osteosarcoma, the patients were followed for a median of 17.3 months (range 4.4–56.4 months). The 2-year overall survival and event-free survival rates were 56.3±19.9% and 33.3±18.0%, respectively. At the time of analysis, 5 patients remained alive, and 2 of them were on therapy. Of the 3 surviving patients without evidence of disease, 2 received high dose chemotherapy with autologous peripheral blood stem cell support.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Our data could be used as a basis for future studies aimed at reaching consensus about long term follow-up and treatment guidelines for this genetically susceptible group of patients.</P>
Study on North Korea's Economic Growth and Foreign Investment Law for the Peaceful Unification

Nowadays there are some changes in international status of North Korea since they are removed from a list of state sponsors of terrorism. Many rumors about the health of Kim, lung Il indicates that these changes might bring an opportunity for North and South to be unified. However, people in South Korea are very worried about the 60-year-gap especially in economy. This economic burden in unification might result in unrest in the society even after the unification. In order to achieve the peaceful unification and preservation of peace after the unification, South Korea must know and understand the current economic situation and the relating problem in North Korea. Therefore, we can minimize the economic burden in case of unification by utilizing its system with some modification. In North Korea, there were many attempts of economic reform influenced by the outer factor such as fall of Soviet Union. However, none of them was in fact successful. Let us examine the Sinuiju Special Administrative region as an example. Although North was desperately copying the economic special zone in Hong Kong establishing separate legislative, executive, and judiciary branch, they were not free from the central government. Therefore, it failed to attract foreign investors. Of course, there was fundamental and profound reason for its failure such as the North Korea's reform was not to intend the pure economic growth for its people but to strengthen the current ruling power such as Kim, lung H. In order to achieve the peaceful unification and preservation the peaceful status, we need to further the study on North Korea's economic reform and its problem.
