Chlorophyll-Related Compounds Inhibit Cell Adhesion and Inflammation in Human Aortic Cells

        Kuan-Hung Lin,Ching-Yun Hsu,Ya-Ping Huang,Jun-You Lai,Wen-Bin Hsieh,Meng-Yuan Huang,Chi-Ming Yang,Pi-Yu Chao 한국식품영양과학회 2013 Journal of medicinal food Vol.16 No.10

The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of chlorophyll-related compounds (CRCs) and chlorophyll (Chl) a + b on inflammation in human aortic endothelial cells. Adhesion molecule expression and interleukin (IL)-8, nuclear factor (NF)-jB p65 protein, and NF-jB and activator protein (AP)-1 DNA binding were assessed. The effects of CRCs on inflammatory signaling pathways of signal transducers and activators of transcription 3 (STAT3) and mothers against decapentaplegic homolog 4, respectively induced by IL-6 and transforming growth factor (TGF)-b, in human aortic smooth muscle cells cultured in vitro were also investigated. HAECs were pretreated with 10 lM of CRCs, Chl a + b, and aspirin (Asp) for 18 h followed by tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-a (2 ng/mL) for 6 h, and U937 cell adhesion was determined. TNF-a–induced monocyte-endothelial cell adhesion was significantly inhibited by CRCs. Moreover, CRCs and Chl a + b significantly attenuated vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, and IL-8 expressions. Treatments also significantly decreased in NF-jB expression, DNA binding, and AP-1 DNA binding by CRCs and Asp. Thus, CRCs exert anti-inflammatory effects through modulation of NF-jB and AP-1 signaling. Ten micromoles of CRCs and Asp upregulated the expression of mothers against decapentaplegic homolog 4 (Drosophila) (SMAD4) in the TGF-b receptor signaling pathway, and SMAD3/4 transcription activity was also increased. Ten micromoles of CRCs were able to potently inhibit STAT3-binding activity by repressing IL-6–induced STAT3 expression. Our results provide a potential mechanism that explains the anti-inflammatory activities of these CRCs.

      • Pyogenic Liver Abscess as a Warning Sign for Primary Liver Cancer: A Nationwide Population-based Study

        Huang, Wen-Kuan,Lin, Yung-Chang,Chiou, Meng-Jiun,Yang, Tsai-Sheng,Chang, John Wen-Cheng,Yu, Kuang-Hui,Kuo, Chang-Fu,See, Lai-Chu Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.8

Background: There have been no large-scale population-based studies to estimate the subsequent risk of primary liver cancer (PLC) among patients with pyogenic liver abscess (PLA). This study aimed to provide relevant data. Materials and Methods: The Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database for the years 2000 and 2005 was used. The PLA group were adult inpatients who were newly diagnosed with PLA from 2000 to 2008. The control group was randomly selected and matched with the PLA group in terms of age, sex, and date in which medical treatment was sought other than for PLA. Results: There were 1,987 patients each in the PLA and control groups. In total, 56 had PLC, 48 (2.4%, 601.5 per 100,000 person-years) from the PLA group, and 8 from the control group. After adjusting for potential covariates, the hazard ratio of PLC for the PLA group was 3.4 times that of the control group (95% confidence interval = 1.6-7.3, p <0.001). The PLC risk for the PLA group was significantly higher within the first year after PLA diagnosis (hazard ratio: 35.4) as compared with the control group and became insignificant (hazard ratio: 2.0, 95% confidence interval = 0.8-4.9) more than one year after PLA diagnosis. Conclusions: Patients with PLA have a higher rate of PLC than matched controls, especially within the first year after the diagnosis of PLA, suggesting PLA is a warning sign for PLC.

Validation of the Chinese Version of the Schizophrenia Cognition Rating Scale

        Kuan-Wei Huang,Pao-Yen Lin,Yu Lee,Yu-Chi Huang,Chi-Fa Hung,Sheng-Yu Lee,Chih-Ken Chen,Liang-Jen Wang 대한신경정신의학회 2022 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.19 No.7

Objective The Schizophrenia Cognition Rating Scale (SCoRS) is an interview-based assessment tool for evaluating the cognitive deficit and daily functioning of patients with schizophrenia. Methods Sixty-eight patients with schizophrenia and 68 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals were recruited to validate the Chinese version of SCoRS in this study. All participants underwent cognitive assessment using the SCoRS, which was verified by the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS), and the UCSD Performance-based Skills Assessment, Brief Version (UPSA-B). Patients with schizophrenia were additionally assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS).Results SCoRS ratings reported by patients (SCoRS-S), those reported by the interviewer (SCoRS-I), and SCoRS global scores (SCoRS-G) showed significant correlation with all subscales of the BACS and the UPSA-B. On receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, SCoRS-S, SCoRS-I, and SCoRS-G significantly differentiated patients with schizophrenia from healthy controls. Moreover, SCoRS-S and SCoRS-I ratings showed positive correlation with the negative symptoms and general symptoms of PANSS.Conclusion The Chinese version of SCoRS showed good discriminant, concurrent, and external validity, suggesting that it is a useful and convenient tool for assessment of cognitive function among Mandarin-speaking patients with schizophrenia in clinical practice.

<P><B>Summary</B></P> <P>We conducted the largest investigation of predisposition variants in cancer to date, discovering 853 pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in 8% of 10,389 cases from 33 cancer types. Twenty-one genes showed single or cross-cancer associations, including novel associations of <I>SDHA</I> in melanoma and <I>PALB2</I> in stomach adenocarcinoma. The 659 predisposition variants and 18 additional large deletions in tumor suppressors, including <I>ATM</I>, <I>BRCA1</I>, and <I>NF1</I>, showed low gene expression and frequent (43%) loss of heterozygosity or biallelic two-hit events. We also discovered 33 such variants in oncogenes, including missenses in <I>MET</I>, <I>RET</I>, and <I>PTPN11</I> associated with high gene expression. We nominated 47 additional predisposition variants from prioritized VUSs supported by multiple evidences involving case-control frequency, loss of heterozygosity, expression effect, and co-localization with mutations and modified residues. Our integrative approach links rare predisposition variants to functional consequences, informing future guidelines of variant classification and germline genetic testing in cancer.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> 871 predisposition variants/CNVs discovered in 8% of 10,389 cases of 33 cancers </LI> <LI> Pan-cancer approach identified shared variants and genes across cancers </LI> <LI> 33 variants affecting activating domains of oncogenes showed high expression </LI> <LI> 47 VUSs prioritized using cancer enrichment, LOH, expression and other evidence </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical Abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • SAR Image Matching Algorithm Base on Improved Hu Invariant Moments

        Lin Kuan,Zhang Yi,Dang Yawen,Huang Junheng 보안공학연구지원센터(IJSIP) 2015 International Journal of Signal Processing, Image Vol.8 No.1

SAR image matching as a key technology is valuable in theory and practicality. Recent years, wide attention has been paid to cross-correlation algorithm and Hu invariant moments algorithm in the image matching field. The paper introduces concept of the two methods, and takes samples to analyze them to summarize the merits and faults. These two methods are not so effectual for SAR image matching. So based on the traditional Hu invariants moments algorithm, a new kind of improved Hu invariant moments algorithm is proposed. The experimental results prove that the improved method is stable and reliable under some variations for rotation in SAR image matching.

‘목소리’의 재현을 통해 실현된 자기 이야기의 역사화 욕망 - 1990년대 한국 김인숙과 타이완 구묘진(邱妙津)의 소설을 대상으로

        황관진(Huang, Kuan-chen) 한국현대소설학회 2022 현대소설연구 Vol.- No.85

This article examines the way of ‘voice’s expression’ in Kim In-sook and Chiu Miao-chin’s 1990’s novels to find out how the women’s desire be illuminated through the feminine writing. Feminism’s representation work began late in Korea and Taiwan to overcome the collective crisis left by the war and dictatorship. Considering this historical background, it is an important issue to focus on the feminine writing of Korea and Taiwan in the 1990s. Kim In-sook and Chiu Miao-chin, as writers representing atypical femininity, had a common fate of wrestling with their dual identity while enjoying the opportunity to visualize themselves as middle-class intellectuals without abandoning their status as elite women. Therefor, the conflict of real life, in which about their central position of cultural class but also marginal in the social system, turns into a contradiction within them and manifests itself as a desire to explore and re-establish one’s identity. Kim In-sook and Chiu Miao-chin express emotions such as deviant desires and erotic physical pleasures in people living one the margins of society through later-talked and diary/epistolary novels. The secret emotions, which were considered impure and violated the so-called gender ‘essence’, are embodied through the narrative about ‘words’ and ‘body’ expressed by the writer with imagination. Their novels not only have an effect on typical confession narratives that differentiate themselves from ‘female’ reflected in men’s standards, but also fulfill the desire for de-collectivization. By representing the woman’s own story as it is, it has successfully reproduced the pluralistic and fluid identity that transcends essentialism. Kim In-sook and Chiu Miao-chin’s novels focused on shaping women’s desire for historization, not in the gender status, but as an autonomous human being. Based on this, it leaves an opportunity to reorganize the field of literature in both countries to respond to modern gender problems as a third world.
