Globalization has led to a dramatic increase in intercultural service encounters between services providers and customers from diverse cultural backgrounds. This paper explores the causal relationship between service employees‟ cultural intelligence and adaptive sales behavior in intercultural service encounters, and the mediating effect of cognitive and emotional empathy on this relationship. A quantitative survey methodology was utilized to collect data on 341 salespeople at duty-free shops located on Jeju Island, Korea. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 18 and Amos 18. The results show that cultural intelligence has a significant impact on cognitive empathy, emotional empathy, and adaptive sales behavior. Cognitive empathy has a positive impact on adaptive sales behavior, whereas the relationship between emotional empathy and adaptive sales behavior is not significant. Additionally, cognitive empathy mediates the relationship of cultural intelligence and adaptive sales behavior. This study has useful managerial implications for employee selection, training, and development in service firms engaged in intercultural service encounters. This study extends prior research on intercultural service encounters by exploring the direct impact of cultural intelligence on intercultural adaptation and the mediating effect of empathy, suggesting the presence of a cognitive mechanism that plays a key role in the impact of cultural intelligence on adaptive sales behavior.
Acute Pancreatitis Due to a Duodenal Ulcer
Sung Ik Pyeon,Jong Ho Hwang,Yong Tae Kim,Ban Seok Lee,Sang Ho Lee,Jae Nam Lee,Jae Hoon Cheong,Kong Jin Oh 대한소화기내시경학회 2014 Clinical Endoscopy Vol.47 No.6
Duodenal ulcers and acute pancreatitis are two of the most commonly encountered gastrointestinal diseases among the general population. However, duodenal ulcer-induced pancreatitis is very rarely reported worldwide. This report elaborates on a distinct medical treatment that contributes to partial or complete treatment of acute pancreatitis induced by a duodenal ulcer scar.
Rabbit Model for in vivo Study of Intervertebral Disc Degeneration and Regeneration
Kong, Min-Ho,Do, Duc-H.,Miyazaki, Masashi,Wei, Feng,Yoon, Sung-Hwan,Wang, Jeffrey C. The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2008 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.44 No.5
Objective: The purpose of this study is to verify the usefulness of the rabbit model for disc degeneration study. Materials: The L1-L2, L2-L3, L3-L4. or L4-L5 lumbar intervertebral disc (IVD) of 9 mature male New Zealand White rabbits were injured by inserting a 16-gauge needle to a depth of 5 mm in the left anterolateral annulus fibrosus while leaving L5-L6 IVD uninjured. Three other rabbits also received intradiscal injections of rabbit disc cells transfected with adenovirus and bone morphogenetic protein-2 (ad-BMP-2) at L4-L5 in addition to injury by 16-gauge needle at the L1-L2 level. Using digitized radiographs, measurements of IVD height were made and analyzed by using the disc height index (DHI). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the injured discs, injected discs, and uninjured L5-L6 discs were performed at 15 weeks post surgery and compared with preoperative MRI scans. Results: All twelve rabbits showed consistent results of disc degeneration within 15 weeks following annular puncture. DHIs of injured discs were significantly lower than that of the uninjured L5-L6 discs (p<0.05). The mean value of disc degeneration grade of injured discs was significantly higher than that of uninjured discs (p<0.05). The injection of disc cell transfected with ad-BMP-2 did not induce disc regeneration at 15 weeks after injection. Conclusion: This study showed that the injured disc had a significant change in DHI on simple lateral radiograph and disc degeneration grade on MRI scans within 15 weeks in all rabbits. Rabbit annular puncture model can be useful as a disc degeneration model in vivo.
Ozone Kinetics and Diesel Decomposition by Ozonation in Groundwater
Kong, Sung-Ho,Kwon, Choong-Il,Kim, Moo-Hoon 한국화학공학회 2003 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.20 No.2
The ozone kinetics (ozone auto-decomposition; effects of pH and solubility) and diesel/TCE/PCE decomposition (effects of hydroxyl radical scavenger, pH, and ozone/H_2O_2) by ozonation process were investigated in aqueous phase using deionized water, simulated groundwater, and actual groundwater. Reactions with deionized water and groundwater both showed the second-order reaction rates; the reaction rate was much higher in groundwater(half-life of 14.7 min) than in deionized water(half-life of 37.5 min). It was accelerated at high pH condition in both waters. The use of ozone showed high oxidation rates of TCE, PCE, and diesel. Hydroxyl radical scavengers acted as inhibitors for diesel decomposition, and high pH condition and addition of hydrogen peroxide could promote to degrade diesel in groundwater indicating ozone oxidation process could be effectively applied to treating diesel contaminated-groundwater.
Recent Advances of Artificial Intelligence in Manufacturing Industrial Sectors: A Review
Sung Wook Kim,Jun Ho Kong,Sang Won Lee,Seungchul Lee 한국정밀공학회 2022 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.23 No.1
The recent advances in artificial intelligence have already begun to penetrate our daily lives. Even though the development is still in its infancy, it has been shown that it can outperform human beings even in terms of intelligence (e.g., AlphaGo by DeepMind), implying a massive potential for its broader application in various industrial sectors. In particular, the growing public interest in industry 4.0, which focuses on revolutionizing the traditional manufacturing scene, has stimulated a deeper investigation of its possible applications in the related industries. Since it has several limitations that hinder its direct usage, research on the convergence of artificial intelligence with other engineering fields, including precision engineering and manufacturing, is ongoing. This overview looks to summarize some of the important achievements made using artificial intelligence in some of the most influential and lucrative manufacturing industries in hopes of transforming the manufacturing sites.
