This paper describes an advanced prototype of voltage-fed zero voltage soft-switching PWM resonant inverter with an active voltage clamped capacitor, which is put into practice for high-frequency high-power induction-heated appliances This application-specific quasi-resonant inverter using the latest generation IGBTs for soft-switching can regulate its output power under a principle of a fixed frequency ZVS-PWM strategy. Its operating principle and unique features are presented as compared with a conventional quasi-resonant ZVS inverter for induction-heated cooker, together with its power regulation characteristics on the basis of its simulation and experimental results. The steady-state performances of this inverter developed for mutli-bumer type induction-heated food cooking appliance are evaluated and discussed from a practical point of view.<br/>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Machine tool made of CFRP has been emerging. Damping capability of the CFRP structure is not fully sufficient for the machine tool. Hence, the viscoelastic damping material has been inserted to improve the damping capability. We developed the optimizing method of the damping material distribution to maximize the damping capability while simultaneously fulfilling requirements regarding the static stiffness and the first resonant frequency of the entire structure. The distribution of the damping material was optimized by the method. The results showed improvement of the damping capability by 23% that was proved through a series of experiments.</P>

Stress fractures of the patella occurring in athletes are quite rare and only 23 cases have been introduced in English literatures. Stress fractures of the patella are classified into two types: transverse and longitudinal. They are mostly seen in the distal one-third of the patella on a plain lateral radiograph. We present here a 16-year-old female basketball player with a stress fracture of the patella. Her serial radiographs demonstrated progression of the fracture including a lytic cortex lesion, known as the gray cortex sign for early stage stress fractures, in the distal one-third of the patella on plain lateral radiographs. In addition, we introduce a surgical technique using non-absorbable suture ligatures (No.2 Ethibond) for a displaced transverse stress fracture of the patella when the extensor mechanism is intact. The ligatures are passed through into the patella using suture passers and simply tied down over the top of the patella. In our case, it led to neither hardware-related nor circumferential loop-related irritation postoperatively.

<P>Functional cooperativity among transcription factors on regulatory genetic elements is pivotal for milestone decision-making in various cellular processes including mammalian development. However, their molecular interaction during the cooperative binding cannot be precisely understood due to lack of efficient tools for the analyses of protein–DNA interaction in the transcription complex. Here, we demonstrate that photoinduced excess electron transfer assay can be used for analysing cooperativity of proteins in transcription complex using cooperative binding of Pax6 to Sox2 on the regulatory DNA element (DC5 enhancer) as an example. In this assay, <SUP>Br</SUP>U-labelled DC5 was introduced for the efficient detection of transferred electrons from Sox2 and Pax6 to the DNA, and guanine base in the complementary strand was replaced with hypoxanthine (I) to block intra-strand electron transfer at the Sox2-binding site. By examining DNA cleavage occurred as a result of the electron transfer process, from tryptophan residues of Sox2 and Pax6 to DNA after irradiation at 280 nm, we not only confirmed their binding to DNA but also observed their increased occupancy on DC5 with respect to that of Sox2 and Pax6 alone as a result of their cooperative interaction.</P>

The phytochemical content of acorn (Quercus aegilops) products (nuts and flour) and by products (shells and leaching waters) regarding their content in total phenols, fatty acids, sodium, potassium and calcium was investigated. Antioxidant activity was also examined. Acorn materials presented high total phenol content (up to 47.6 ± 0.6 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g dry material), with a substantial amount remaining after leaching (11.6 ± 0.7 mg GAE/g flour), and high DPPH radical scavenging and ferric reducing activity. Their content in potassium, calcium, oleic and linoleic acids was considered significant. Molecular weight distribution of proteins and peptides was also studied and found between 7 and 45 kDa; only for acorn shells a band[250 kDa appeared. Leaching parameters (time, material size, material to water ratio, temperature, NaCl presence) significantly affected the phytochemical content of the remained leached material.

Anti-lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antibody administration has the potential benefits of neutralizing and consequently controlling rumen-derived LPS during subacute ruminal acidosis. Four Holstein bulls were used in this crossover study with a 2-week wash-out period. Anti-LPS antibody (0 or 4 g) was administered once daily for 14 days. Significantly lower ruminal LPS and higher 1-h mean ruminal pH were identified in the 4 g group. However, blood metabolites, acute-phase proteins, cytokines, and hepatic transcriptomes were not different between the two groups. Therefore, anti-LPS antibody administration mitigated ruminal LPS release and pH depression without accompanying responses in acute-phase inflammation or hepatic transcriptomic expression.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The absolute optical thickness and surface shape of optical devices are considered as the fundamental characteristics when designing optical equipment. The thickness and surface shape should be measured simultaneously to reduce cost. In this research, the absolute optical thickness and surface shape of a 6–mm-thick fused silica transparent plate of diameter 100mm was measured simultaneously by a three-surface Fizeau interferometer. A measurement method combining the wavelength tuning Fourier and phase shifting technique was proposed. The absolute optical thickness that corresponds to the group refractive index was determined by wavelength tuning Fourier analysis. At the beginning and end of the wavelength tuning, the fractional phases of the interference fringes were measured by the phase shifting technique and optical thickness deviations with respect to the ordinary refractive index and surface shape were determined. These two kinds of optical thicknesses were synthesized using the Sellmeier equation for the refractive index of fused silica glass, and the least square fitting method was used to determine the final absolute optical thickness distribution. The experimental results indicate that the all the measurement uncertainties for the absolute optical thickness and surface shape were approximately 3nm and 35nm, respectively.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The absolute optical thickness and surface shape of a transparent plate were measured simultaneously using wavelength tuning. </LI> <LI> Two kinds of signal from interferogram were separated in the frequency domain using 4<I>N</I> − 3 phase shifting algorithm. </LI> <LI> 4<I>N</I> − 3 algorithm was used for compensating the phase shift errors and coupling errors. </LI> <LI> Two kinds of optical thicknesses were synthesized using Sellmeier equation and least square fitting. </LI> </UL> </P>
