Negation is a controversial area of Korean syntax that has recently drawn considerable attention, particularly from native generative grammarians. Various analyses have been proposed, but all of these fail to capture the fact that the variable behavior of negation depends on certain constraints that are regular and predictable. This study is an attempt to throw some light on the nature of these constraints and to show that the variability is a natural result of a set of different but related rules.
'Irregular' Verbs in Korean Revisited

A number of Korean verbs do not follow the general phonological rules in their conjugation. However, the patternedness of their "irregularity" has long noted by most grammarians. Thus even the earliest analyses set up different "classes" of "irregular" verbs. Furthermore it was well known that many of the irregularities wrer due to some earlier historical processes. More recently in applying the generative theory, many linguists have come to believe that most, if not all, of these "anomalous" verbs are not really exceptions to some fixed rules but that they behave differently because they have different underlying forms. Thus superficially identical forms of "regular" and "irregular" verbs are thought to be a direct result of certain phonological rules which neutralize them in a well-defined environment. This paper purports to review some of the "regular"solutions thus far given and to present my own claim on the underlying representations of the "irregular" verbs and the phonlogical rules required to derive their phonetic representations. Choy gives twelve classes of verbs which show anomaly either in the shape of their stems or tin the affixes that are attached to them. I shall group them into five sections in each of which related processes will be discussed.

<B>Abstract</B><P>We previously reported that lentiviral vectors derived from the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) were efficient at transducing rhesus hematopoietic repopulating cells. To evaluate the persistence of vector-containing and -expressing cells long term, and the safety implications of SIV lentiviral vector-mediated gene transfer, we followed 3 rhesus macaques for more than 4 years after transplantation with transduced CD34+ cells. All 3 animals demonstrated significant vector marking and expression of the GFP transgene in T cells, B cells, and granulocytes, with mean GFP+ levels of 6.7% (range, 3.3%-13.0%), 7.4% (4.2%-13.4%), and 5.6% (3.1%-10.5%), respectively. There was no vector silencing in hematopoietic cells over time. Vector insertion site analysis of granulocytes demonstrated sustained highly polyclonal reconstitution, with no evidence for progression to oligoclonality. A significant number of clones were found to contribute at both 1-year and 3- or 4-year time points. No vector integrations were detected in the MDS1/EVI1 region, in contrast to our previous findings with a γ-retroviral vector. These data show that lentiviral vectors can mediate stable and efficient long-term expression in the progeny of transduced hematopoietic stem cells, with an integration profile that may be safer than that of standard Moloney murine leukemia virus (MLV)-derived retroviral vectors.</P>

Low cost and scalable manufacturing of highly doped cellulose for enhanced multifunctional applications is still an issue. In this work, eco-friendly nanocomposites were fabricated by incorporating regenerated cellulose (RC) of 10, 30, and 50 wt% into an exfoliated graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), resulting in the intercalation of GnPs. The thermal and electrical properties of hybrid nanocomposites were investigated. The structural property was conducted through scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction analyses. Strong frequency-dependent dielectric response was found due to the change of the permittivity and the loss tangent of nanocomposites by different content of RC, which is associated with the polarizations behavior. Non-elastic relaxation at the GNPs–RC chains interfacial areas in an alternating field was identified as the main cause of polarization losses among others. Detailed ferroelectric measurements provided the evidence of the ideal resistive behavior of the nanocomposites, which are confirmed by the resistivity measurements along the out-of-plane direction of the nanocomposite sheets.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We investigated the tailored electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of polyester-matrix composites consisting of glass fiber textiles coated with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (xGnPs). The effects of various combinations of material parameters, including MWCNT length, xGnP size, MWCNT:xGnP weight ratio, host-substrate surface configuration of carbon nanomaterials (CNMs), and their amount coated per unit area, on the EMI SE were studied. The shielding mechanisms, namely, absorption, reflection, and multiple reflections, are discussed based on the underlying governing physics. EMI SE measurements showed that coating glass fibers with hybrid MWCNTs/xGnPs at 8/2 ratio yields EMI SEs higher than those of composites containing the same content of a single-type of CNM, ranging from 56.8 dB at 30 MHz to 35.3 dB at 1.5 GHz. Morphological studies showed that, upon placement on glass fiber surfaces, 1D fiber-like MWCNTs serve as interconnects that bridge the randomly oriented 2D platelet-like xGnPs to form an efficient plane shield of electromagnetic waves.</P>

본고는 지난 50년간 미국에서 눈부신 발전을 이룩한 한국어학에 관한 연구들을 개관한 것이다. 한국어의 언어학적 현상들은 일반 언어학 이론의 발전에 커다란 공헌을 하고 있으며, 미국에서도 한국어에 대해 언어학 전반에 걸친 다양한 연구가 진행되고 있다. 우선 음성학과 음운론 분야에서는 중복음, 후두자질, 음절말 자음의 의무적인 불과 현상 등에 대한 논의를 소개하였다. 어휘론과 형태론에 관한 연구는 음운론적 교체에 대해 어떤 형태론적 제약들이 적용되는가 하는 문제들이 연구되었다. 통사론과 의미론의 두 측면에서 격, 장단형부정, 존칭, 문법화, 동사 ‘하-’에 관한 다양한 문제들이 조명될 것이다. 이 외에도 언어변화나 문자(한글), 언어습득에 대한 연구들까지 분석할 것이다.

<P>Highly porous amorphous Zn<SUB>2</SUB>SnO<SUB>4</SUB> electrodes are prepared using electrospinning techniques and combined with organic or ruthenium dyes to fabricate dye‐sensitized solar cells. As reported by Sung‐Yeon Jang, Renaud Demadrille, Il‐Doo Kim, and co‐workers on page 3146, the devices based on 3‐μm‐thick electrodes and the organic dyes demonstrate significantly improved performances compared to those using the ruthenium complex. Using this approach, solar cells with power conversion efficiencies up to 3.7% are obtained. </P>
