Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the patients` perspectives on nursing students` clinical practices in the wards, and to investigate their willingness for allowing students to practice on them. Methods: This was a descriptive study. 116 inpatients were recruited from the S University Hospital. A 60-item questionnaire was applied to collect the data. The participants were 19 years and older with sound judgement, and were not in special or intensive care units. Data analysis was done in SPSS/WIN 22.0 using descriptive statistics, Fishers exact test, and the ANOVA test. the participant answered to questionnaire from April 29th 2016 to May 10th. Results: 40 participants (34.5%) stated they would allow students` practice, while 72 (61.2%) said they would allow only under staff supervision. 5 participants (4.3%) stated they would not allow whatsoever. The 3 most allowed were emotional support, oral care, and vital signs measurement while the 3 least allowed were gastric feeding, intravenous catheterization, and urinary catheterization. Conclusion: Patients were more inclined to allow students to practice on them when a member of the medical team was present. A fair number of participants said they would be more inclined to allow students` practice if they felt the student was competent; hence, reinforcing simulation sessions is vital in enhancing students` competency and ultimately practice allowance.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Mitochondrial dysfunction and dyslipidemia are associated with obesity-linked metabolic disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ginger extract on muscle mitochondrial biogenesis and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) metabolism in high-fat diet-fed rats. Supplementation with ginger extract reduced final body weight and epididymal adipose tissue mass without affecting energy intake (<I>p</I> <0.05). Ginger extract increased mitochondrial size and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content as well as key genes expression related to mitochondrial biogenesis, including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α), nuclear respiratory factor-1 (NRF-1) and transcription factor A (Tfam) in skeletal muscle (<I>p</I> <0.05). In addition, ginger extract elevated serum HDL-C along with up-regulating ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1), apolipoprotein A-1 (ApoA-1) and lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) mRNA in liver (<I>p</I> <0.05). These results suggest that ginger extract may have a beneficial effect against obesity-related metabolic disorders with elevating muscle mitochondrial biogenesis and serum HDL-C level.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Effect of ginger extract was investigated in high-fat diet-fed rats. </LI> <LI> Treatment with ginger extract increased muscle mitochondrial biogenesis. </LI> <LI> Treatment with ginger extract elevated serum high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol level. </LI> <LI> Taken together, ginger extract might have beneficial effect against obesity-related metabolic disorders. </LI> </UL> </P>

Ecklonia cava, an edible marine brown alga (Laminariaceae), is a rich source of bioactive compounds such as fucoidan and phlorotannins. Ecklonia cava extract (ECE) was prepared using 70% ethanol extraction and ECE contained 67% and 10.6% of total phlorotannins and dieckol, respectively. ECE treatment significantly inhibited receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclast differentiation of RAW 264.7 cells and pit formation in bone resorption assay (p <0.05). Moreover, it suppressed RANKL-induced NF-κB and mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling in a dose dependent manner. Downregulated osteoclast-specific gene (tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase, cathepsin K, and matrix metalloproteinase-9) expression and osteoclast proliferative transcriptional factors (nuclear factor of activated T cells-1 and c-fos) confirmed ECE-mediated suppression of osteoclastogenesis. ECE treatment (100 μg/ml) increased heme oxygenase-1 expression by 2.5-fold and decreased intercellular reactive oxygen species production during osteoclastogenesis. The effective inhibition of RANKL-stimulated osteoclast differentiation and oxidative stress by ECE suggest that ECE has therapeutic potential in alleviating osteoclast-associated disorders.
Hybrid-solid oxide electrolysis cell: A new strategy for efficient hydrogen production

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Water electrolysis based on a solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) has potential to be cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient for hydrogen production. There are two types of SOECs, depending on electrolyte materials: oxygen ion conducting SOECs (oxygen-SOECs) and proton conducting SOECs (proton-SOECs). Here we report our new findings in exploring a SOEC based on a mixed-ion conductor that can transport both oxygen ion and proton at the same time, which is denoted as “Hybrid-SOEC”. When BaZr<SUB>0.1</SUB>Ce<SUB>0.7</SUB>Y<SUB>0.1</SUB>Yb<SUB>0.1</SUB>O<SUB>3-<I>δ</I> </SUB> was used as an electrolyte, the Hybrid SOEC shows the highest efficiency, demonstrating a current density of 3.16Acm<SUP>−2</SUP> at 1.3V and 750°C in 10% humidified hydrogen at hydrogen electrode and 10% humidified air at air electrode. Moreover, the Hybrid SOEC exhibits no observable degradation in performance for more than 60h of continuous operation, implying a robust system for hydrogen production.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The new concept of “Hybrid-SOEC“ based on mixed ionic conducting electrolyte is proposed. </LI> <LI> The Hybrid-SOEC shows excellent performance compared with other water-electrolysis systems. </LI> <LI> Current density of 3.16Acm<SUP>−2</SUP> at 1.3V (@750°C) is achieved based on the Hybrid-SOEC operation. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
