        Exploring the Experiences of Automobile Manufacturing Workers Participating in Rehabilitation Exercise Programs after Industrial Accidents

        Purpose: This study was analyzed with a qualitative research method by applying a phenomenological method to examine the experiences and perceptions and attitudes about health care of workers participating in rehabil-itation exercises after suffering an industrial accident while working in the K automobile manufacturing industry in Korea. Method: As for the selection of research participants, a total of 12 participants were selected as the final research participants, including 1 female and 11 male, who could provide a wealth of information on the subject of the study. For data collection and analysis, Colaizzi's six-step analysis method was used to identify the partic-ipants' experiences and cognitive changes who participated in the rehabilitation program. Also, the participants' facial expressions and actions were recorded so that they could be used as additional observational data and reflected in the results of further research. Results: As a result of the study, 5 categories, 13 topic collections, 32 topics, and 97 construct meanings were finally confirmed. Specifically, the importance of strengthening the intrinsic motivation of the participants was emphasized in order to continuously practice health promotion after an industrial accident in the automobile manufacturing industry. In addition, it appears that a method of self-awareness of the necessity of exercise, giving fun of the complex program, and preventing and managing it in daily life is needed. Conclusion: The contents derived from the results of this study represent the changing perception of workers toward continuous health promotion management and improvement after an industrial accident. Through the research results, it was an opportunity to confirm the changing perception of health care among workers, and it is expected to be actively used in the future by developing rehabilitation exercise programs at the workplace in the automobile industry.

      • Autophagy deficiency leads to protection from obesity and insulin resistance by inducing Fgf21 as a mitokine

        Despite growing interest and a recent surge in papers, the role of autophagy in glucose and lipid metabolism is unclear. We produced mice with skeletal muscle–specific deletion of Atg7 (encoding autophagy-related 7). Unexpectedly, these mice showed decreased fat mass and were protected from diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance; this phenotype was accompanied by increased fatty acid oxidation and browning of white adipose tissue (WAT) owing to induction of fibroblast growth factor 21 (Fgf21). Mitochondrial dysfunction induced by autophagy deficiency increased Fgf21 expression through induction of Atf4, a master regulator of the integrated stress response. Mitochondrial respiratory chain inhibitors also induced Fgf21 in an Atf4-dependent manner. We also observed induction of Fgf21, resistance to diet-induced obesity and amelioration of insulin resistance in mice with autophagy deficiency in the liver, another insulin target tissue. These findings suggest that autophagy deficiency and subsequent mitochondrial dysfunction promote Fgf21 expression, a hormone we consequently term a 'mitokine', and together these processes promote protection from diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance.

      • Exploiting Replicated Cache Blocks to Reduce L2 Cache Leakage in CMPs

        <P>Modern chip multiprocessors (CMPs) employ large L2 caches to reduce the performance gap between processors and off-chip memory. However, as the size of an L2 cache increases, its leakage power consumption also becomes a major contributor to the total power dissipation. Managing the leakage power of L2 caches, therefore, is an important issue in realizing low-power CMPs. In CMPs with private L2 caches, each processor makes a copy of the data in its local cache in order to access the data faster, which is called replication. In this paper, we propose a novel leakage management technique that dynamically turns off replications in private L2 caches for leakage power reduction by exploiting two key observations: 1) the cost of an extra cache miss due to the turned-off replication is small because the same cache block exists in another on-chip cache and 2) turning off the replication incurs no extra cache miss if it is invalidated by other processors in order to maintain cache coherence. Since blindly turning off the frequently accessed replications can degrade performance, the proposed technique dynamically controls the number of turned-off replications. The proposed technique can be implemented by slightly modifying the MESI protocol with a new turned-off shared (TOS) coherence state. The TOS state indicates that the corresponding block is shared by other caches but turned off. Experiments on a four-processor CMP with private L2 caches show that the proposed technique reduces the energy consumption of the L2 caches and the main memory by 19.4% on average, with less than 1% performance loss over the existing cache leakage management technique.</P>

        Pragmatic Language Characteristics of Children with Mild Intellectual Disabilities using Audio-VisualDiscourse Tasks (KOPLAC)

        Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the pragmatic language characteristics of school-aged children with mild intellectual disabilities. To do so, this study examined general pragmatic competence and its sub-domains of pragmatic language. Methods: Thirty-six children participated in this study: 12 mild intellectual disabilities (ID group), 12 age-matched normally developing children (CA-TD), and 12 vocabulary age-matched children (LA-TD). The Korean Meta-Pragmatic Language Assessment for Children (KOPLAC) was used for pragmatic language assessment. It consists of three sub-domains: communication regulation, discourse and story information inferences, and meta-linguistic awareness. Results: CA-TD showed significantly higher performances than ID and LA-TD in communication regulations (conversation partner and communication context regulation) and the irony/metaphor task. However, there were no significant differences between ID and LA-TD. The results showed significant differences in performance on indirect expression tasks and reference language among the three groups. ID group showed significantly lower performance than CA-TD and LA-TD in the storytelling task. However, we found no significant differences between CA-TD and LA-TD in the storytelling task. Conclusion: The three groups showed significant differences in general pragmatic competence and the sub-domains of pragmatic language. These results imply that school-aged children with intellectual disabilities have weaker pragmatic language abilities. Based on these findings, children with intellectual disabilities may need more support to improve their pragmatic language abilities. The results also suggest that pragmatic language abilities may need to be considered when assessing and intervening with school-aged ID children. 배경 및 목적: 본 연구에서는 경도 지적장애 아동의 화용언어 특성을 고찰하기 위해 대화 및 이야기 화면으로 제시되는 시청각적 담화과제를 포함한 한국아동 메타-화용언어검사(KOPLAC)를 실시하여 총 정반응률과 하위영역에 따른 세 집단 간의 차이를 알아보고자 하였다. 방법: 본 연구에서는 경도 지적장애, 언어연령일치 일반, 생활연령일치 일반 총 36명의 아동을 대상으로 한국아동 메타-화용언어검사(KOPLAC)를 통해 의사소통 조율 과제, 담화 및 이야기정보 추론 과제, 상위언어인식 과제를 실시하였다. 세 연령 집단이 화용언어평가의 하위과제에 따라 어떠한 차이를 나타내는지를 알아보기 위해 일원분산분석을 실시하였고, 사후검정을 이용하여 유의한 차이를 보이는 세부영역 및 집단을 살펴보았다. 결과: 세 집단 간 화용언어 평가 총 정반응률 및 세부영역 모두에서 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 지적장애 아동이 가장 낮은 수행력을 보였는데, 이는 생활연령이 같은 일반아동 집단뿐만 아니라 언어연령이 같은 일반아동 집단과 비교하였을 때도 유의하게 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 논의 및 결론: 경도지적장애 아동은 화용언어 발달에 지연을 보이고 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었으며, 화용언어의 발달은 또래상호작용, 성인기 이후의 사회적 관계에도 영향을 미치기 때문에 지적장애 아동의 언어능력을 평가하고 중재를 계획할 때 화용언어능력과 발달 특성을 고려해야 한다는 점을 시사한다.

        VoIP Capacity Analysis in Full Duplex WLANs

        <P>With the increase of the popularity of voice over wireless local area networks (VoWLANs), how to improve the capacity of VoWLANs is being actively investigated. A recent technology to allow simultaneous transmission and reception, i.e., full duplex (FD) communications, can be a promising candidate for improving the capacity of VoWLANs. In this paper, we develop an analytical model of an FD medium access control protocol for VoWLANs, and study its capacity. Extensive simulation results are given to show the effects of FD communications, different voice over IP (VoIP) codecs, and data connections on the VoIP capacity.</P>

        Yuja Juice and Concentrate Enhance Immunomodulating Effects via Increasing Immune-Related Cytokines in RAW264.7 Cells and Mouse Splenocytes

        Good immunity is highly valued in modern society. Although yuja’s efficacy in immunity enhancement has been elucidated, there have been few studies on its role. In this study, we investigate the immune enhancement activity of yuja juice extracts (YJEs) and yuja concentrate extracts (YCEs). The immunoregulatory potencies of YJE and YCE were examined by determining cell viability and the expression of cytokines and immune-related molecules in RAW264.7 cells and mouse primary splenocytes. YJE and YCE induced the production of inducible nitric oxide synthase and cytokines (IL-10, IL-4, IL-6, and IFN-c) at 1000 lg/mL concentration in RAW 264.7 cells. In addition, in mice that were orally administered 3000 or 2000 mg/kg concentrations of YJE or YCE, immune-related cytokines in splenocytes were boosted to levels higher than those in control mice. Importantly, no liver toxicity was observed at all doses. Thus, our results suggest that compounds present in YJEs and YCEs represent novel natural immune-modulatory substances.

      • Recovery and Dynamic Flow Analysis of Mercury from Waste Fluorescent Lamps in Korea

        End-of-life fluorescent lamps containing with a toxic metal of mercury are collected from municipal waste streams. There are still huge amounts of the lamps in use from households, commercial areas, and industrial sectors, although demands for the lamps have been gradually decreasing with recent replacement with light emitting diode (LED) lamps. According to the "The Second Energy Fundamental Plan in Korea" published by the Korea Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in 2014, existing public fluorescent lamps will be entirely replaced with 100% LED lighting after 2020. Thus, enormous amounts of end-of-life fluorescent lamps will end up with disposal. It is important to properly manage and recycle the lamps due to the presence of mercury. In this study, dynamic flow analysis was conducted to estimate the flow of materials that are recycled or discarded through the use phase over time by considering the life span of the lamp product. Mass flow of mercury in the lamps was also examined by quantifying flow and stocks of the substance in a well-defined system based on mass balance approach. Dynamic flow analysis is used to quantify past material flows, establish the material flow patterns and apply the lifetime of the lamps, and the replacement rate in order to track the temporal changes in the material flows. Based on the results, the amount of end-of-life fluorescent lamps generated was estimated to be about 100 million in 2008, and is expected to gradually increase to 140 million in 2014 and then decrease to about 100 million in 2019. Mercury from the lamps has steadily declined from 2.19 ton-Hg in 2008. In 2030, the expected emission of fluorescent lamps was estimated at about 10 million, and mercury was estimated at only 22 kg- Hg. The flow of mercury in fluorescent lamps was expected to continually decrease by 2030 due to the increased LED replacement. It implies that the amount of mercury emissions to the environment is expected to sharply decline in the future.
