Effect of Panax Ginseng on the plasma glucose and free fatty acid levels of the normal chicken and experimentally induced-hyperglycemic chicken, and on the release of glucose and glycogen contents in the chicken liver slices was investigated. 1) Plasma glucose levels was not influenced, but plasma FFA level decreased significantly by intravenous administration of Panax Ginseng in the normal chicken. 2) Epinephrine-induced hyperglycemic and hyperlipemic response and hyperglycemia induced by pancreatic ligation were inhibited by Panax Ginseng, and in the glucose tolerance test, Ginseng shortened the recovery time to normal glucose level. 3) In the chicken liver slices, Panax Ginseng inhibited the release of glucose from the specimen, but did not affect glycogen contents of the tissue.
원추각막에서 구면다곡률렌즈 착용이 각막지형도 및 내피세포에 미치는 영향

목적: 원추각막 환자에서 구면다곡률렌즈의 착용이 각막지형도와 내피세포에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 대상과 방법: 6개월 이상 추적 관찰된 37명(49안)의 원추각막 환자에서 구면다곡률렌즈를 착용한 19명(26안)과 착용하지 않은 18명(23안)의 의무기록을 후향적 분석하였다. 구면다곡률렌즈 착용후 최대교정시력, 전안부 소견을 6개월간 관찰하였고, 렌즈 착용전과 6개월 후의 각막지형도 및 내피세포 소견을 분석하였다. 결과: 21안(80.8%)에서 렌즈 착용 후 0.8이상의 최대교정시력을 보였다. 각막지형도검사에서 구면다곡률렌즈 착용전과 착용 6개월 후의 변화량에서 가장 가파른 Sim-K, shape factor(SF), 원추 정점 굴절력은 대조군과 비교하여 유의한 통계적 차이가 있었으며(p<0.05), 가장 완만한 Sim-K, corneal irregularity measure(CIM)의 변화량은 두 군 사이에 차이가 없었다(p>0.05). 내피세포 소견의 변화에서 두 군의 차이는 없었따(p>0.05). 결론: 원추각막 환자에서 구면다곡률렌즈의 단기간 착용은 원추각막의 진행을 유발하지 않았고 각막 내피세포에 영향이 없었다. Purpose: To analyze the effect of the spheric multi-curve lens on the changes of corneal topography and endothelial cells in keratoconic eye. Methods: Forty-nine eyes of 37 keratoconic patients who had been followed more than 6 months were included in the study. Twenty-six eyes of 19 patients were fitted with spheric multi-curve lens, and the remaining 23 eyes of 18 patients were followed without any lens fitting as control. After spheric multi-curve lens fitting, visual acuity, and slit lamp examination were evaluated. Changes of corneal topography and endothelial cell were evaluated at first visit and 6 months after lens fitting. Results: After lens fitting, 21 eyes (80.8%) showed best corrected visual acuity of better than 20/25. The value of the steepest Sim-K, shape factor (SF), and apical corneal power on corneal topography were significantly decreased in the spheric multi-curve lens fitting group compared to the control group (p<0.05). On the other hand, the value of the flattest Sim-K, and corneal irregularity measure (CIM) were not sighnificantly changed (p>0.05). There were no significant differences in change of corneal endothelial cell density, mean cell area and percentage of hexagonal cell betweeen the two groups (p>0.05). Conclusions: Short-term wearing of spheric multi-curve lens for 6 months in keratoconic patients showed no effect on progression of keratoconus and cornealendothelial cells.

3-O-α-D-Glucopyranosyl-L-serine의 合成過程은 다음과 같은 段階로 되어 있다. a) N-Benyloxycarbonyl-3-O-(3, 4, 6-tri-O-acetyl-2-O-nitro-α-D-glucopyranosyl)-L-serine benzgl ester Koenigs-Knorr 反應에 依해서 3, 4, 6-tri-O-acetyl-2-O-nitro-β-D-glucopyranosyl chloride와 N-Benzyloxycarbonyl-L-serine benzyl ester을 縮合시켰다. 收量은 75% b) 3-O-(3, 4, 6-Tri-O-acetyl-α-D-glucopyranosyl)-L-serine 加水素分解 (Hydrogenolysis)에 依하여 N-Benyloxycarbonyl-3-O-(3, 4, 6-tri-O-acetyl-2-O-nitro-α-D-glucopyranosyl)-L-serine benzyl ester에서 benzyl과 benzyloxycarbonyl와 O-nitro의 保護group을 除去하었다. 結晶性, 收量은 90% c) 3-O-α D-Glucopyranosyl-L-serine Ammonia加 methanol로 3-O-(3, 4, 6-tri-O-acetyl-α-D-glucopyranosyl)-L-serine에서 acetyl group을 除去하여 얻었으며, 無定形의 白色固體 收量은 70% The procedure consisted of the following steps: a) N-Benyyloxycarbonyl-3-O-(3, 4, 6-tri-O-acetyl-2-O-nitro-α- D-glucopyranosyl)-L-serine benzyl ester N-Benzyloxycarbonyl-L-serine benzyl ester was condensed with 3, 4, 6-tri-O-acetyl-2-O-nitro-β-D-glucopyranosyl chloride under the condition of Koenigs -Knorr procedure. The product was obtained in 75%yield. b) 3-O-(3, 4, 6-tri-O-acetyl-α-D-glucopyranosyl)-L-serine Hydrogenolysis of the product removed benzzl, benzyloxycarbonyl, and O-nitro protecting groups. The product was obtained as a crystalline solid in 90% yield. c) 3-O-α D-Glucopyranosyl-L-serine After deacetylation of 3-O-(3, 4, 6-Tri-O-acetyl-α-D-glucopyranosyl)-L-serine with methanolic ammonia, the desired 3-O-α-D-Glucopyranosyl-L-serine was oobtained as an amorphous, white solid in 75%yield.
Preliminary Effects of Oral Uridine on the Ocular Surface in Dry Eye Patients

<P>We designed a randomized, double blinded, 3-months controlled prospective clinical study to investigate effects of oral uridine on the ocular surface in dry eye patients. Twenty-seven patients who diagnosed as dry eye with lower than 5 mm of wetting in the Schirmer strip, with corneal epithelial erosion and who completely followed-up till 3 months were enrolled. Corneal-conjunctival fluorescein staining, non-anesthetic Schirmer test, impression cytology, and Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) were evaluated in the experimental and placebo groups at the baseline, 1 and 3 months after start of medication in a double blinded manner. Fluorescein stain score of the cornea was markedly decreased in oral uridine group compared to the placebo group at 3 months after medication (<I>P</I>=0.032, Mann-Whitney U test). The Schirmer wetting score for the oral uridine group was significantly increased (<I>P</I>=0.001, Wilcoxon signed rank test) at 3 months and its difference between two groups was statistically significant (<I>P</I>=0.030, Mann-Whitney U test). OSDI scores were significantly decreased at 1 and 3 months in treatment group. Oral uridine is effective in treatment of dry eyes.</P>
In-depth morphological study of mesiobuccal root canal systems in maxillary first molars: review

A common failure in endodontic treatment of the permanent maxillary first molars is likely to be caused by an inability to locate, clean, and obturate the second mesiobuccal (MB) canals. Because of the importance of knowledge on these additional canals, there have been numerous studies which investigated the maxillary first molar MB root canal morphology using in vivo and laboratory methods. In this article, the protocols, advantages and disadvantages of various methodologies for in-depth study of maxillary first molar MB root canal morphology were discussed. Furthermore, newly identified configuration types for the establishment of new classification system were suggested based on two image reformatting techniques of micro-computed tomography, which can be useful as a further 'Gold Standard' method for in-depth morphological study of complex root canal systems.
