Discussion of “Physio-Chemical Properties, Consolidation, and Stabilization of Tropical Peat Soil Using Traditional Soil Additives – A State of the Art Literature Review” by Afnan Ahmada, Muslich Hartadi Sutantoa, Mohammed Ali Mohammed Al-Bareda, Indr

        Brendan C. O’Kelly 대한토목학회 2022 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.26 No.8

This discussion article provides commenting on the sections of the review paper by Ahmad et al. (the authors) concerning consistency limits determinations for peats and peaty soils, drawing on the writer’s experiences regarding the usefulness of liquid limit (LL) and plastic limit (PL) testing/results for these soils in explaining their geotechnical behaviors/properties. From the writer’s experience, despite being regularly specified in geotechnical engineering practice and used in research work, the conventional consistency limits tests generally do not produce physically meaningful results when testing peat soils, especially for more fibrous peats. Hence, the writer does not agree with the authors’ recommendations on consistency limits testing of peats; namely, they recommended that an utmost effort is needed to improve the quality and standard of the thread rolling test and the fall-cone test for consistency limits determinations of highly organic soils such as peat. Rather than grappling with various known inherent shortcomings of consistency limits testing for peats and other highly organic soils, a suggested way forward for assessing the likely geoengineering behavior/properties of these materials points to the routine measurement of a more useful suite of index tests; namely, their natural water content, organic content, fiber content, and humification (decomposition) level. In this discussion, the above aspects are explored in detail, including greater elaboration of the writer’s earlier research work in this area, which was touched on in the authors’ paper.

Determining the Safety and Effectiveness of Electrocautery Enhanced Scissors for Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (with Video)

        Kelly E. Hathorn,Walter W. Chan,Hiroyuki Aihara,Christopher C. Thompson 대한소화기내시경학회 2020 Clinical Endoscopy Vol.53 No.4

Background/Aims: Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) has recently come to the forefront in the management of achalasia. Weaimed to analyze the efficacy and safety of the use of electrocautery enhanced scissors (EES) for POEM. Methods: This retrospective cohort study prospectively collected the data of all adult patients (aged ≥18 years) with normal foregutanatomy who underwent POEM using EES. The patients’ baseline characteristics and procedure details (time, tunnel length, myotomy length, depth, and location) were recorded. The primary outcome was clinical success (3-month post-procedure Eckardtscore of ≤3). The secondary outcomes were technical success and adverse events. A paired Student’s t-test was performed. Results: Fifteen patients were included in this study. The technical success rate of myotomy using EES was 100%. Fellows participatedin the myotomy in all cases. The clinical success rate was 93.3% (14/15). The mean pre-Eckardt score was 5.4±2.5, while the meanpost-Eckardt score was 1.3±1.3, which indicated a significant improvement (p≤0.0001). The most common treatment-related adverseevents were post-procedure pain (4, 26.7%) and symptomatic reflux disease (4, 26.7%). Conclusions: In the largest series to date on the use of EES in POEM, we demonstrated that this technique has both technical andclinical efficacy as well as an excellent safety profile.

Assessment of the mechanical properties of the muscle-tendon unit by supersonic shear wave imaging elastography: a review

Kelly Mônica Marinho e Lima,José Francisco Silva Costa Júnior,Wagner Coelho de Albuquerque Pereira,Liliam Fernandes de Oliveira 대한초음파의학회 2018 ULTRASONOGRAPHY Vol.37 No.1

This review aimed to describe the state of the art in muscle-tendon unit (MTU) assessment by supersonic shear wave imaging (SSI) elastography in states of muscle contraction and stretching, during aging, and in response to injury and therapeutic interventions. A consensus exists that MTU elasticity increases during passive stretching or contraction, and decreases after static stretching, electrostimulation, massage, and dry needling. There is currently no agreement regarding changes in the MTU due to aging and injury. Currently, the application of SSI for the purpose of diagnosis, rehabilitation, and physical training remains limited by a number of issues, including the lack of normative value ranges, the lack of consensus regarding the appropriate terminology, and an inadequate understanding of the main technical limitations of this novel technology

Complex Pastoralism in an Age of Technological Transformation: Jean Toomer’s Cane and the Poetics of Racial Untranslatability

        ( Kelly Walsh ) 미국소설학회(구 한국호손학회) 2021 미국소설 Vol.28 No.1

Jean Toomer’s Cane has long been recognized as a singular work of American modernism, mixing prose, lyric poetry, black spirituals, and drama to forge an aesthetic search for African American self-realization. In staging the failure of black characters to achieve this by rooting themselves in the soil and rustic life of Georgia, I argue, Cane enacts a complex pastoralism, which focalizes the dissonant and pervasive doubleness of black life in an age of technological transformation. With bifurcations that include African and American, past and present, rural and urban, South and North, black vernacular speech and standardized English writing, Toomer ironizes and racializes the longing for an unspoiled Arcadia that might redress the insufficiencies of the present. In the face of the racialized forces of modernization and industrialization, which threaten to translate black consciousness and aspirations into a single idiom, Toomer insists on a writing that maintains intimate contact with the contradictions and particularities of black life, forging complexities that resist translation and subvert unexamined American myths of exceptionalism and progress. Ultimately, African American self-realization remains unachieved in Cane; its complex pastoralism reveals this open-ended project requires inventively affirming the antitheses of modern black life, defiantly asserting its singularity and untranslatability.

      • Overweight boy’s and girl’s experiences with and perception of athletic clothing and its relationship to physical activity participation

        Kelly L. Reddy-Best,Jennifer Harmon 한국의류학회 2015 Fashion and Textiles Vol.2 No.1

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between athletic clothing and physical activity in overweight children. The perceptions of athletic clothing among overweight children were also investigated. The researchers asked: (a) what are overweight children’s experiences with athletic clothing, (b) does clothing impact overweight children’s motivation to participate in physical activity, and (c) are there differences between boys and girls? Focus groups and individual interviews were conducted with 35 children between the ages of 9 and 14 who were considered overweight according to their body mass index. Literature on social physique anxiety and body image provided the conceptual framework for the study. Four key themes emerged from the children’s discussions of their experiences with athletic clothes and participation in physical activity: (a) body exposure concerns, (b) clothing size exposure concerns, (c) desire to quit because of athletic clothes, and (d) positive experiences with athletic clothes.

Forging Autonomy in a Tough Neighborhood

        Kelly Robert Edwin(로버트 켈리) 21세기정치학회 2009 21세기 정치학회보 Vol.19 No.3

The two Koreas have the toughest political geography on the planet. Like Canada, Switzerland, Paraguay, and other medium states abutting great powers, the Koreas constantly face the threat of absorption (Poland in 1939) or bullying and domination (Mongolia during the Cold War). However, Korea uniquely faces not one but three local great powers, and in the past it has been victim to their alternating imperial pretensions. Japanese and Russian power are today in eclipse, but China is rising rapidly. It presents the greatest future threat to Korean autonomy. Post-World War II North and South Korea have successfully carved out autonomy through creative diplomacy. Drawing from their modern histories, as well as a counterfactual united Korea, I suggest three strategies for middle power autonomy. North Korea has successfully played local opponents off each to create foreign policy space for itself. South Korea has recruited an external patron (the US) to bolster its pushback on local encroachment. And a united Korea may pursue neutralist finlandization to avoid the ire of the rising China. Such strategies for middle power autonomy are rarely the subject of international relations research. I conclude with the prediction that South Korea will continue its client relationship with the US until reunification.

The Effects of Pilates Exercise on Cardiometabolic Health, Low Back Pain and Disease

( Kelly Michiya ),( Myung Dong Choi ) 한국체육학회 2018 International journal of human movement science Vol.12 No.1

Pilates is a form of exercise that challenges core strength and seeks to improve both muscular endurance and postural alignment and it may prove to be helpful for those with medical issues in improving general fitness through building strength and flexibility. This paper reviews the studies that investigated the efficacy of Pilates exercises on medical conditions including cardiometabolic parameters, low back pain, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, ankylosing spondylitis, and breast cancer. Due to the limited number of studies investigating cardiometabolic parameters, it is difficult to draw a conclusion despite some favorable findings. While more studies exist on the effect of Pilates on low back pain than studies on other conditions, they are still limited and lack generalizability due to the heterogeneity of participants as well as the variability of exercises prescribed. Even then, it appears that Pilates is feasible and effective in alleviating symptoms associated with low back pain and other medical conditions. Overall, the studies reviewed here have shown high adherences rates in Pilates training with no adverse effects.
