Application of Supercharge End-to-Side (SETS) Obturator to Femoral Nerve Transfer in Electrical Injury-Induced Neuropathy to Improve Knee Extension

        Katie Pei-Hsuan Wu,Li-Ching Lin,Johnny Chuieng-Yi Lu 대한성형외과학회 2022 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.49 No.6

Femoral nerve injuries are devastating injuries that lead to paralysis of the quadriceps muscles, weakening knee extension to prohibit ambulation. We report a devastating case of electrical injury-induced femoral neuropathy, where no apparent site of nerve disruption can be identified, thus inhibiting the traditional choices of nerve reconstruction such as nerve repair, grafting, or transfer. Concomitant spinal cord injury resulted in spastic myopathy of the antagonist muscles that further restricted knee extension. Our strategy was to perform (1) supercharge end-to-side technique (SETS) to augment the function of target muscles and (2) fractional tendon lengthening to release the spastic muscles. Dramatic postoperative improvement in passive and active range of motion highlights the effectiveness of this strategy to manage partial femoral nerve injuries.

Vibration analysis of a Timoshenko beam carrying 3D tip mass by using differential transform method

Kati, Hilal Doganay,Gokdag, Hakan Techno-Press 2018 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.65 No.4

Dynamic behaviour of beam carrying masses has attracted attention of many researchers and engineers. Many studies on the analytical solution of beam with concentric tip mass have been published. However, there are limited works on vibration analysis of beam with an eccentric three dimensional object. In this case, bending and torsional deformations of beam are coupled due to the boundary conditions. Analytical solution of equations of motion of the system is complicated and lengthy. Therefore, in this study, Differential Transform Method (DTM) is applied to solve the relevant equations. First, the Timoshenko beam with 3D tip attachment whose centre of gravity is not coincident with beam end point is considered. The beam is assumed to undergo bending in two orthogonal planes and torsional deformation about beam axis. Using Hamilton's principle the equations of motion of the system along with the possible boundary conditions are derived. Later DTM is applied to obtain natural frequencies and mode shapes of the system. According to the relevant literature DTM has not been applied to such a system so far. Moreover, the problem is modelled by Ansys, the well-known finite element method, and impact test is applied to extract experimental modal data. Comparing DTM results with finite element and experimental results it is concluded that the proposed approach produces accurate results.

Dysregulation of the EphrinB2−EphB4 ratio in pediatric cerebral arteriovenous malformations is associated with endothelial cell in vitro and functions as a novel noninvasive biomarker in patients

        Katie Pricola Fehnel,David L. Penn,Micah Duggins-Warf,Maxwell Gruber,Steven Pineda,Julie Sesen,Alexander Moses-Gardner,Nishali Shah,Jessica Driscoll,David Zurakowski,Darren B. Orbach,Edward R. Smith 생화학분자생물학회 2020 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.52 No.-

We investigated (1) EphrinB2 and EphB4 receptor expression in cerebral AVMs, (2) the impact of an altered EphrinB2: EphB4 ratio on brain endothelial cell function and (3) potential translational applications of these data. The following parameters were compared between AVM endothelial cells (AVMECs) and human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMVECs): quantified EphrinB2 and EphB4 expression, angiogenic potential, and responses to manipulation of the EphrinB2:EphB4 ratio via pharmacologic stimulation/inhibition. To investigate the clinical relevance of these in vitro data, Ephrin expression was assessed in AVM tissue (by immunohistochemistry) and urine (by ELISA) from pediatric patients with AVM (n=30), other cerebrovascular disease (n=14) and control patients (n=29), and the data were subjected to univariate and multivariate statistical analyses. Compared to HBMVECs, AVMECs demonstrated increased invasion (p=0.04) and migration (p=0.08), impaired tube formation (p=0.06) and increased EphrinB2:EphB4 ratios. Altering the EphrinB2:EphB4 ratio (by increasing EphrinB2 or blocking EphB4) in HBMVECs increased invasion (p=0.03 and p<0.05, respectively). EphrinB2 expression was increased in AVM tissue, which correlated with increased urinary EphrinB2 levels in AVM patients. Using the optimal urinary cutoff value (EphrinB2>25.7pg/μg), AVMs were detected with high accuracy (80% vs. controls) and were distinguished from other cerebrovascular disease (75% accuracy). Posttreatment urinary EphrinB2 levels normalized in an index patient. In summary, AVMECs have an EphrinB2:EphB4 ratio that is increased compared to that of normal HBMVECs. Changing this ratio in HBMVECs induces AVMEC-like behavior. EphrinB2 is clinically relevant, and its levels are increased in AVM tissue and patient urine. This work suggests that dysregulation of the EphrinB2:EphB4 signaling cascade and increases in EphrinB2 may play a role in AVM development, with potential utility as a diagnostic and therapeutic target.

      • PATHWAYS TO CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT: QUALITATIVE INSIGHTS

        Kati Kasper-Brauer,Anna Nauen,Margit Enke 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2018 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2018 No.07

Engaged customers are a crucial asset in many service industries, especially in the tourism and hospitality context (e.g. So, King, Sparks, Wang, & Hall, 2016). Positive effects of customer engagement (CE), such as word-of-mouth, community participation, or provision of new ideas for services are likely to become increasingly important for companies and help them develop unique offerings and generate new revenue streams (e.g. Kumar & Pansari, 2016; Venkatesan, 2017; Verhoef, Reinartz, & Krafft, 2010). Although previous research has repeatedly emphasized the positive effects of CE, the patterns that bring about CE are less clear. This research contributes to the investigation of CE antecedents and draws on data elicited from a series of focus group discussions and interviews with customers, experts and executives in the services, hotel, and tourism industry. The findings from these qualitative studies point to complex patterns of customer and firm based antecedents (e.g. Brodie et al., 2011; van Doorn et al., 2010) that play a role in stimulating CE. Among other results, the findings show that customers exhibit different motives for engaging, such as feelings of familiarity, pride and belonging, helpfulness or emotions and companies need to adjust their approaches to meet these motives. In sum, these findings contribute to the literature on CE by unveiling different antecedents of CE and investigating their interplay. This article also contributes to the services and relationship management literature by investigating which relationship characteristics play a role in CE and how they bring about engagement behaviors.

Effects of Reactive Air Brazing Parameters on the Interfacial Microstructure and Shear Strength of GDC–LSM/Crofer 22 APU Joints

        Kati Raju,Seyoung Kim,Young-Hoon Seong,Dang-Hyok Yoon 한국세라믹학회 2019 한국세라믹학회지 Vol.56 No.4

In this paper, the joining characteristics of GDC–LSM ceramics with Crofer 22 APU metal alloys was investigated at different brazing temperatures and holding times by reactive air brazing. Brazing was performed using Ag–10 wt% CuO filler, at three different temperatures (1000, 1050, and 1100°C for 30 minutes) as well as for three different holding times (10, 30, and 60 minutes at 1050°C). The interfacial microstructures were examined by scanning electron microscopy and the joining strengths were assessed by measuring shear strengths at room temperature. The results show that with increasing brazing temperature and holding time, joint microstructure changed obviously and shear strength was decreased. Shear strength varied from a maximum of 100±6 MPa to a minimum of 18±5 MPa, depending on the brazing conditions. These changes were attributed to an increase in the thickness of the oxide layer at the filler/metal alloy interface.

The Changing Anatomy of Regional Trade Agreements in East Asia

Kati Suominen 동아시아연구원 2009 Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.9 No.1

The recent proliferation of regional trade agreements in the East Asian region can be seen as the most notable development in the region's trading panorama in recent years. Yet, very little is as yet understood about the anatomy of these agreements and, consequently, their full implications to the regional economy. This article strives to fill this gap by analyzing the structure of four dozen RTAs by their various key component parts, including tariff liberalization schedules, rules of origin, and competition policy, customs, investment, and services provisions. The results reveal that intra-Asian RTAs are generally quite rapidly liberalizing, with the exception of agriculture, but they are also quite thin in trade-related disciplines when compared with the more legalistic US trans-Pacific RTAs and those of Mexico and Chile. The proposed Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific would inherently be a construct of the political economy interests of these various constituent RTAs.
