High sensitivity, stable ultraviolet photodiodes of a ZnSSe PIN junction structure on p+-GaAs substrates were developed by using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). These short-wavelength photodiodes are fabricated on p-type (100) GaAs by utilizing an optimized \hetero-interface super-lattice (SL) buer" consisting of ZnTe-ZnSe multiple quantum well (MQW), overcoming a large energy barrier (>1 eV) for hole conduction in the GaAs-ZnSe hetero-interface. Another new important improved technique is to form an extremely thin, high-donor doping n+-window layer of 150 Å for incident ultraviolet light, by which we have established a high sensitivity of 0.11 A/W (ηex = 45 %: wavelength = 300 nm) with very low dark leakage currents (sub pA/mm2 at 20 V) at 300 K.
Relationship of IGF-I mRNA Levels to Tissue Development in Chicken Embryos of Different Strains
Kita, K.,Noda, C.,Miki, K.,Kino, K.,Okumura, J. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2000 Animal Bioscience Vol.13 No.12
Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) mRNA levels in the eyes, heart, liver and breast muscle removed from dwarf egg-type, normal egg-type and normal meat-type chicken embryos at 7, 14 and 20 days of incubation were measured. There was no influence of chicken strain on IGF-I gene expression in the eyes and liver. The IGF-I gene expression in eyes increased significantly along with the incubation period. In the liver, IGF-I gene expression at 20 days of incubation was significantly higher than that at 14 days of incubation. In the muscle, the lowest value for IGF-I gene expression was observed in meat-type chicken embryos. Regression analysis revealed that IGF-I gene expression was significantly correlated to the weights of the eyes and liver, but not the muscle. We conclude that there is little influence of strain on tissue IGF-I gene expression in chicken embryos during incubation but that tissue development in chicken embryos is nevertheless at least partly regulated by the change in IGF-I gene expression.

A Study on the Perceptions of Korean EFL Learners on Four Native Varieties of English Accents
Bohyon Chung,Miki H. K. Bong 한국영어어문교육학회 2017 영어어문교육 Vol.23 No.1
This paper explores how Korean EFL learners perceive the four native varieties of English, namely British English (BrE), American English (AmE), Australian English (AusE) and Canadian English (CE). An experimental study with 121 undergraduate students in Korea was conducted. Adopting the indirect approach, survey questions employed in the experiment include adjectives, phrases or verbs, corresponding to three dimensions of attitudes: (1) dynamism (awareness, confidence) (2) status (superiority/privileged) and (3) solidarity (preference, favor). The collected data were analyzed according to frequency count, and two different ANOVAs. Results indicate that Korean EFL learners are likely to have recognized that one privileged English accent exists (Status) and they prefer a particular native variety of English accents (Solidarity). They show a less agreeable or less confident attitude, however, in their self-reported English accent identification level (Dynamism). In the English accent identification task, participants demonstrate better performance in recognizing BrE and AmE better than others (Dynamism: Awareness, Preference). Further comparisons are delivered in two conditions: gender and English proficiency level. Findings call for the properties of various English accents to be included in the learning materials or stimuli for students. In this way what is taught and learned will correspond to the present WE context.
Dual modulation of human hepatic zonation via canonical and non-canonical Wnt pathways

The hepatic lobule is divided into three zones along the portal-central vein axis. Hepatocytes within each zone exhibit a distinctive gene expression profile that coordinates their metabolic compartmentalization. The zone-dependent heterogeneity of hepatocytes has been hypothesized to result from the differential degree of exposure to oxygen, nutrition and gut-derived toxins. In addition, the gradient of Wnt signaling that increases towards the central vein seen in rodent models is believed to play a critical role in shaping zonation. Furthermore, hepatic zonation is coupled to the site of the homeostatic renewal of hepatocytes. Despite its critical role, the regulatory mechanisms that determine the distinctive features of zonation and its relevance to humans are not well understood. The present study first conducted a comprehensive zone-dependent transcriptome analysis of normal human liver using laser capture microdissection. Upstream pathway analysis revealed the signatures of host responses to gut-derived toxins in the periportal zone, while both the canonical Wnt pathway and the xenobiotic response pathway govern the perivenular zone. Furthermore, we found that the hypoxic environment of the perivenular zone promotes Wnt11 expression in hepatocytes, which then regulates unique gene expression via activation of the non-canonical Wnt pathway. In summary, our study reports the comprehensive zonation-dependent transcriptome of the normal human liver. Our analysis revealed that the LPS response pathway shapes the characteristics of periportal hepatocytes. By contrast, the perivenular zone is regulated by a combination of three distinct pathways: the xenobiotic response pathway, canonical Wnt signaling, and hypoxia-induced noncanonical Wnt signaling.
