Stress corrosion phenomena of a high strength and high toughness 3Ni-Cr-Mo steel were investigated with various welding and electrochemical parameters. The weldment specimens were prepared by using two different welding techniques of the shielded metal are welding (SMAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW). The K_(ISCC) values of GMAW specimens were higher than those of the SMAW specimens due to higher amount of inclusions in the latter. Dominant crack propagation mode was quasi-cleavage (QC) type in GMAW specimens and intergranular cracking (IG) type in SMAW specimens. The hydrogen charging effect was clearly observed from the specimens tested at -1020 mV (vs. SCE) where hydrogen evolution became significant. However, the hydrogen charging effect can be properly controlled by adjusting the optimum cathodic potential. The stress corrosion property of 3Ni-Cr-Mo steel weldment can be improved by selecting a proper welding method with good shielding efficiency as well as by controlling an appropriate cathodic protection potential.
