This is a series of continuing research on facial bone fractures of Koreans worked by Dept. of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, Dental College of Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea, since 1972. The study was based on a series of 630 patients with facial bone fractures treated as in patient at Yonsei Medical Center, Yonsei University, during the period of Jan. 1982 through Dec, 1987. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The ratio of Men to Women was 4.3 : 1, and admissions for facial bone fractures have been increased year after 1984. 2. The age frequency was highest in the third decade(38.3%). and fourth, second, fifth decade in orders. 3. The traffic accident was the most frequent cause of facial bone fractures(51.3%). 4. The most common location of facial bone fractures was the Mandible(35.3%), and Zygoma complex(29.8%), Nasal bone(15.0%), Maxilla(11.0%) were next in order of frequency. 5. In 291 patients of Mandible fractures, 226(77.7%) had fractures only in Mandible and 65(22.3%) had another facial bone fractures. The most frequent fracture site of mandible was the Symphysis(43.0%) and Angle(22.4%), and Simple fracture was the most frequent in type of fracture(66.9%). Intermaxillarty fixatin & Open reduction was major method of treatment(36.9%). 6. In 394 patients of Midface fractures 323(82.0%) had fractures only in Midface and 71(18.0%) had another facial bone fractures. The most frequent site of Midface fractures was zygoma complex & zygomatic arch(42.7%), and Simple fracture was the most common type of fractures. Observation(Maxilla :44.2%, Zygoma :51.0%) and Open Reduction(Maxilla :20.0%. Zygoma :23.5%) were the major method of treatment. 7. The frequency of Nasal bone fracture was about 1/5 of Midface fractures, and Closed Reduction(42.2%) was the major method of treatment. 8. The complication was reported in only 16 patients, and Malunion was the major complication. 9. Head(44.4%), Lower extrimities(14.5%) and Eye(12.3%) were injured commonly with facial bone fractures. 10. The elapsed time from injury to hospital was within 24 hours in 73.8% of patients, however 15.5% of patients arrived the hospital 72 hours after injury.

The objective of this study was to characterise the pattern of p53 mutations in bladder turmor. In this study, 25 bladder transitional cell carcinomas were analyed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) for p53 nuclear overexpression, and the results were compared with those of polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformational polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) analysis in exon 5-8 of the p53 gene and DNA sequencing analysis. 15 out of 20 cases (75%) showed p53 nuclear immunoreactivities on IHC. On PCR-SSCP analysis, 10 out of 25 cases(40%) had abnormal shifts on mobility. 62% of the mutations were in exon 8. Direct DNA sequencing analysis were performed in these 10 cases to confirm the presence of mutated p53 genes and to determine the type of mutations. Sixteen point mutations were detected in 10 cases. Tow specimens had double mutations and another two had triple mutations. G:C→A:T transitions were the most frequent patterns (62.5%). One mutation was a premature stop codon and two were silent mutations. There out of 10 had a point mutation at codon 285 (GAG/Glu→AAG/Lys) and two had at codon 280(GAG/Glu→AAG/Lys). One of 16 mutations was transition at hot spot codon 273 with CpG site. These results suggest that altered expressions and point mutations of p53 occured in all grade of bladder cancer, but are more associated with hight grade bladder tumors. To elucidate the carcinogenesis of bladder cancer, further studies should be carried out.

Patients with spontaneous pontine hemorrhage very often develop setvere disturbances of consciousness, pupilary abnormalities, respiratory and motor. They have high mortality rate. Therefore, I analyzed the correlation between the Glasgow outcome scale(GOS)and clincial manifestations or computed tomographic(CT)findings in 48 patients with spontaneous pontine hemorrhage to clarify factors predicting the prognosis. I examined 48 Patients with spontaneous pontine hemorrhage; 33 males and 15 females, age 54.6±8.99(mean±S.D.;range 39 to 68)brought to our hospital between January 1995 and December 1999, retrospectively. Correlations between the clinical manifestations, CT findings and the GOS was assessed with multivariate regression analysis. The results were as follow: 1) Patients with the pontine hemorrhage were of 8.8% in those with intracerebral hemorrhage. The ratio of male and female was 33 to 15. The incidence of age is eqial to 40,50 and 60. Total mortality was 41.6%. 2) The poor prognostic factor were that; Glasgow coma scale(GCS)3∼8, irregular respiration. pupilary abnormality, quadriplegia, Brain CT typeⅠ(massive), hydrocephalus, extrapontine extension, Intraventricular hemorrhage(IVH). These clinical analysis should be useful in determining the level of care and future resuscitative efforts.

The study was conducted to investigate the biological activities of an protein-bound polysaccharide (GLP) isolated from the fruit body of Ganoderma lucidum. GLP was extracted by hot water and then it was purified high (GLP-HM) and low (GLP-LM) molecular weight fraction by ethanol precipitation. Both of GLP-HM and GLP-LM at doses of 20 mg/kg in vivo had the ability to inhibit the tumor growth of Sarcoma 180 tumor-bearing mice. Inhibition rates of tumor (%) were inhibited 60.6% and 38.7% by GLP-HM and GLP-LM, respectively. In assay of anti-complementary activity in vitro, the GLP-HM were higher than that of the GLP-LM polysaccharide. And also, the GLP-HM enhanced nitric oxide production of mouse bone marrow cells. When the GLP-HM was injected intraperitoneally in tumor-bearing mouse at doses of 20 mg/kg, the concentration of TNF-α in vivo was 140.9 pg/ml in the serum, 269.6 pg/ml in sarcoma tumor mass and 879.4 pg/ml in liver. This study shows that the high molecular polysaccharide from mushroom can enhance more the bioactivities than that of the low molecular polysaccharide.

Weeds are widely grown in the field and are infected by many viruses. A survey was conducted to identify viruses infecting weeds in Korea. Virus-infected weed samples including Rorippa indica (L.) Hiern, R. islandica (Oed.) Bord, Crepidiastrum denticulatum (Houtt.) Pak & Kawanno, Achyranthes japonica (Miq.) Nakai, and Chrysanthemum boreale (Makino) Makino were collected in Kyonggi Province. These weeds were grown in the greenhouse and were isolated on 10 test plants. Several virus isolates were isolated fron infected tissues and were further studied by host range assay, serological test, electron microscopy (EM), reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and sequencing. Each isolated virus strain was mechanically transmitted to weeds and various hosts including Nicotiana spp., Brassica spp., Vigna unguiculata, Capsicum annuum, and Cucumis sativus and showed systemic mosaic, vein clearing, necrosis, mottle, malformation, chlorosis, and/or death of host plants in some cases. Each virus was then purified using infected leaves and observed by EM. From these results three viruses were isolated and identified as Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV), Broad bean wilt virus (BBWV), and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). RT-PCR using virus-specific oligonucleotide primers and the cloning were conducted to determine the nucleotide sequences of coat proteins of the three viruses their amino acid sequence were deduced. The amino acid sequence homologies were about 92.7 to 99.7%, 96.2 to 97.7%, and 93.9 to 98.6% to other reported TuMV, BBWV, and CMV strains, respectively. These results suggest that many weeds may serve as primary inoculum source of diseases caused by TuMV, BBWV, CMV and that the management of these viral diseases can be achieved through weed control.

Providing an adequate environment for horses is important to minimize the level of stress for domesticated horses. The objectives of this study were 1) to evaluate the effect of living conditions on stress level of horses, 2) to observe the effect of one month confinement on self-maintenance behavior and stereotypic behavior of horses. The experiment was conducted at National Institute of Animal Science, Equine Field Station(Seonghwan-eup, Korea). Horses were staying in the paddock prior to the experiment. On day 1, five horses were randomly selected and housed in metal fence panels stall. Six horses remained in the same paddock. The ratio of neutrophil to lymphocyte (on day 15) and cortisol (on day 1 and 29) from stalled horses were significantly higher than horses in the paddock. Duration or frequency of self-maintenance behaviors such as feeding, drinking, resting, walking was not significantly different between day 1 and day 29. However, the frequency of urination significantly decreased(p<0.05) on day 29 compared with day 1. The frequency of stereotypic behaviors was not different between day 1 and 29. Our data indicate that horses may be more stabled when they are staying in the paddock rather than staying in the stall, but the stress level of horses in the stall during one month confinement was not effective for horses to adapt stereotypic behavior. In conclusion, providing an adequate environment and stress-less horse management techniques can minimize the stress level of horses.
