This study investigates the efect of extrusion temperature on room temperature tensile properties of as-extruded AZ91plates regarding microstructure and texture development. Forward extrusion was performed at 300, 350 and 400 °C with anextrusion ratio of 25:1. Yield strength rather increases from 212 to 224 MPa as extrusion temperature rises, despite graingrowth from 11.9 to 41.2 µm. To understand the underlying mechanisms of this unusual hardening, the efects of microstructural features are discussed with emphasis on grain size, precipitates, stored strain energy and texture. Microscopicanalyses and simulation results reveal that grain refnement, continuous precipitates and stored strain have no decisive efecton yield strength. Development of stronger basal texture leads to an increase in yield strength. Texture strengthening makesbasal<a>slip more difcult to be activated when loading along the extrusion direction. Based on this, stronger basal textureplays a more dominant role in increasing yield strength.

In 2016, as a part of the research program 'Survey of Korean Indigenous Species', diverse environmental samples were collected from various sources of freshwater, seawater, soil, wetland, reclaimed land, sand, pine forest, plant root, ginseng field, solar saltern, and caves. Thousands of bacterial strains were isolated from the diverse samples and identified based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses. The present study, as a phylogenetic subset of the primary research program, reports 24 unrecorded bacterial species in Korea that belong to the orders Rhizobiales and Sphingomonadales in the class Alphaproteobacteria. Based on the high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities (>98.8%) and formation of a robust phylogenetic clade with the closest type species, it was determined that each strain belonged to each independent and predefined bacterial species. There is no official report that these 24 bacterial species have been described in Korea; therefore, 10 species of nine genera in the order Rhizobiales and 14 species of seven genera in the order Sphingomonadales are described for unreported alphaproteobacterial species in Korea. Gram reaction, colony and cell morphology, biochemical properties, and isolation sources are also provided in the species description section.
Preventive Effects of Melatonin on the Cell-Mediated Immunotoxicity of Cadmium in ICR Mice

To investigate the preventive effects of melatonin (MLT) on the immunotoxicity of cadmium acetate[Cd(AC)2] in ICR mice, Mlt(10,50mg/kg as cadmium) were orally administered to mice once a day (5:00, PM) for 28 consecutive days. Cadmium(Cd) test solution was also administered at 25mg/kg of cadmium through the same route 2hr after administration of MLT daily, Mice were immunized and challenged with sheep red blood cells (SRBC). Immune functions evaluated were delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) response, mitogenic response, and flow cytometry analysis. The results of these studies were summarized as follows ; DTH response was abnormally increased in mice treated with Cd alone. DTH response was normally depressed in mice treated with Cd plus MLT along with the increase of MLT doses. The mitogenic response of splenic T cell to Con A and that of B cells to LPS was remarkably increased by MLT treatment as compared with treatment of Cd alone In case of CD 8+ cells, the slight increase was observed in MLT treatment. Splenic T cells and B cells were significantly increased by MLT treatment as compared with treatment with Cd alone. These results suggest that MLT has significant preventive effects on the immunotoxic status induced by Cd exposure.

<P>Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common, progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN). Numerous studies have provided evidence suggesting that neuroinflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of PD. In this study, we used lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced in vitro and in vivo inflammation models to investigate whether human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) have a protective effect on the dopaminergic system through anti-inflammatory mechanisms. The hMSC treatment significantly decreased LPS-induced microglial activation, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA expression, and production of NO and TNF-α compared with the LPS-only treatment group. In co-cultures of microglia and mesencephalic dopaminergic neurons, hMSC treatment significantly decreased the loss of tyrosine hydroxylase-immunopositive (TH-ip) cells. The hMSC treatment in rats showed that TH-ip neuronal loss induced by LPS stimulation in the SN was considerably decreased and was clearly accompanied by a decrease in activation of microglia, as well as TNF-α and iNOS mRNA expression and production of TNF-α. These data suggest that hMSCs have a neuroprotective effect on dopaminergic neurons through anti-inflammatory actions mediated by the modulation of microglial activation. Along with various trophic effects and trans-differentiational potency, the anti-inflammatory properties of MSCs could have major therapeutic implications in the treatment of PD. © 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc.</P>

In this study, traditionally fermented Korean soybean paste, eoyukjang, was characterized and its microorganisms were isolated. The contents of amino-type and ammonia-type nitrogens in the pastes we examined were 89.60 to 98.93mg/% and 0.32 to 0.30mM, respectively. Antioxidant activity increased during ripening, with antioxidant activities in 1- and 4-year-old pastes measured at 9.80 and 13.84 μmol of Trolox equivalents/g, respectively. Twenty-two and 19 microorganisms were isolated from soybean pastes under aerobic and anaerobic conditions,respectively. After identification, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens,Bacillus subtilis, and Bacillus vallismortis were dominant. In the enzyme activities, protease and lipoxygenase activities were observed from 0.065 to 0.733 unit/mg protein and 0.016 to 0.19 unit/mg protein, respectively. Amylase activity was, however, broad between 43.1 to 571.8 unit/mg protein.

<P>Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is a serious clinical problem worldwide. The aim of the present study was to examine the antimicrobial activity of oxyresveratrol (ORV) against MRSA. The antimicrobial activity of ORV was evaluated against three strains of MRSA and one methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) strain using a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay, MTT colorimetric assay, checkerboard dilution test and time-kill assay. The MIC of ORV for all strains was moderate at 125 ?g/ml. Of note, the antimicrobial activity and fractional inhibitory concentration index values of ORV were markedly increased in the presence of a non-growth inhibitory dose of certain antibiotics. Time-kill curves revealed that a combination of ORV with ciprofloxacin or with gentamicin reduced bacterial counts to below the lowest detectable limit after 24 h. These effective combinations may be used as potential antimicrobial regimens for use in the management of MRSA.</P>
