SEPARATION OF FATTY ACIDS BY CRYSTALLIZATION USING TWO LIQUID PHASES
Maeda, Kouji,Nomura, Yoshihisa,Fukui, Keisuke,Hirota, Shouji 한국화학공학회 1997 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.14 No.3
First, the phase diagrams for the water+ethanol+fatty acids system were described, and the separation method was considered. Second, the separation of lauric acid+myristic acid mixture in the ethanol aqueous solution including ethanol by liquid-liquid extraction and crystallization has been examined. The extraction of fatty acids from the organic phase to the aqueous solution has been done. Fatty acids in the aqueous solution were crystallized using the aqueous SLE surface. The solvent-free mole fraction of lauric acid in the aqueous solution was a little higher than that in the organic phase. Fine crystals made in the aqueous solution had better purity for lauric acid than the solvent-free mole fraction of lauric acid in the aqueous solution. The effects of the mole fraction of ethanol in the aqueous solution, the mole fraction of lauric acid in the organic solution, extraction temperature and crystallization temperature on the purity of the crystals were reported.

Students becoming physical therapists (PT) or occupational therapists (OT) cannot experience rehabilitation for actual patients’ troubles before clinical training. For this reason we have developed the knee joint robot imitating patients" troubles such as range of motion trouble, contracture, rigidity, spasticity and so on. Therefore students can experience rehabilitation for patients’ troubles virtually by using the robot. Moreover, from the standpoint of educational effect we have to develop a training program using the robot for the students to learn skilled manual therapy techniques for patients’ troubles. In this paper, we propose a training program consisting of the monitoring system, the force display system, the supervisory system and the evaluation system. Firstly, we develop monitoring function in which the graphs of robot’s angle, velocity and their appropriate values for training are displayed during training. Secondly, we develop simulation algorithms of clonus and hypertonia occurring in manual therapy. Lastly, we develop an evaluation method of manual therapy techniques for a patient with hypertonia.
Degraded Document Image Binarization Combining Local Statistics

In this paper, an efficient binarization algorithm for degraded document images is proposed. The proposed method contains two procedures: background estimation and foreground detection. The background is estimated by median filtering. The rationality is the characters can be assumed as irregular pixels. Text regions are detected by background subtraction and local variance calculation, and then local linear transform is performed to the detected text regions. Finally, a naive thresholding algorithm, ex. Otsu’s method, is performed to obtain the binary result. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves promising results.

Recently, there has been a growing demand for soft magnetic materials with high conversion characteristics, due to the trend of electric devices to higher-frequency range. For ruduceing core loss in the high-frequency range, using finely grained and high-resistivity Fe-based alloy powder is most efficient methods. But, conventionally, there's been a compressibility problem for such powder. In this work, Fe-based alloy powder that offers both high resistivity and high compressibility was developed by studyuing composition of the powder, and reduction of core loss of P/M soft magnetic materials in the high frequency range was achieved.
Improvement of Knee Flexion and Extension Simulation Accuracy in KneeRobo

In a previous paper, we reported on the initial development of KneeRobo, which replicates knee joint troubles experienced by patients in order to enable students studying to become physical or occupational therapists to gain practical training/testing virtually. We also developed a control algorithm that enabled KneeRobo to realize involuntary internal/external rotation during knee flexion and extension. However, it is well known that in addition to internal/external rotation, abduction/adduction also occurs involuntarily during knee flexion and extension. Consequently, this paper proposes a new control method that improves the simulation accuracy of KneeRobo’s knee joint movements. This is accomplished by developing a control algorithm and designing a pulley arrangement that facilitates realization of involuntary movements such as internal/external rotation and abduction/adduction during knee flexion and extension by KneeRobo. The results of experimental comparison with the actual knee joint movements of a healthy person confirm that the knee joint movements simulated by the improved KneeRobo are accurate.
