Network Traffic Measurement Analysis using Machine Learning

        Hae-Duck Joshua Jeong(Hae-Duck Joshua Jeong) 한국인공지능학회 2023 인공지능연구 (KJAI) Vol.11 No.2

In recent times, an exponential increase in Internet traffic has been observed as a result of advancing development of the Internet of Things, mobile networks with sensors, and communication functions within various devices. Further, the COVID-19 pandemic has inevitably led to an explosion of social network traffic. Within this context, considerable attention has been drawn to research on network traffic analysis based on machine learning. In this paper, we design and develop a new machine learning framework for network traffic analysis whereby normal and abnormal traffic is distinguished from one another. To achieve this, we combine together well-known machine learning algorithms and network traffic analysis techniques. Using one of the most widely used datasets KDD CUP'99 in the Weka and Apache Spark environments, we compare and investigate results obtained from time series type analysis of various aspects including malicious codes, feature extraction, data formalization, network traffic measurement tool implementation. Experimental analysis showed that while both the logistic regression and the support vector machine algorithm were excellent for performance evaluation, among these, the logistic regression algorithm performs better. The quantitative analysis results of our proposed machine learning framework show that this approach is reliable and practical, and the performance of the proposed system and another paper is compared and analyzed. In addition, we determined that the framework developed in the Apache Spark environment exhibits a much faster processing speed in the Spark environment than in Weka as there are more datasets used to create and classify machine learning models.

      • Optimization of an Intelligent Wheelchair: LiDAR and Camera Vision for Obstacle Avoidance

        Joshua Green,Joshua Clounie,Rafael Galarza,Shawn Anderson,Jash Campell-Smith,Razvan Cristian Voicu 제어로봇시스템학회 2022 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2022 No.11

According to the Wheelchair Foundation, over 131 million individuals depend on a wheelchair. Wheelchairs drastically improve the quality of life by providing partially disabled persons with mobility. Moreover, wheelchairs have become a central component of many hospitals, necessary to transport patients. However, manual wheelchairs limit users’ or helpers’ freedom by requiring direct actuation, either by turning the wheels or pushing the wheelchair. Electric wheelchairs allow users to navigate a wheelchair through a single control mechanism to improve flexibility. Autonomous wheelchairs are the next step in improving the quality of life and further enhancing user freedom. This paper presents the optimization of an automated wheelchair implementing unique and novel path planning and localization indoors. The results illustrate the implementation of camera vision with LiDAR for obstacle avoidance and advancements in a modular infrastructure.

A review of chronic pectoralis major tears: what options are available?

        Joshua R. Giordano,Brandon Klein,Benjamin Hershfeld,Joshua Gruber,Robert Trasolini,Randy M. Cohn 대한견주관절의학회 2023 대한견주관절의학회지 Vol.26 No.3

Rupture of the pectoralis major muscle typically occurs in the young, active male. Acute management of these injuries is recommended; however, what if the patient presents with a chronic tear of the pectoralis major? Physical exams and magnetic resonance imaging can help identify the injury and guide the physician with a plan for management. Nonoperative management is feasible, but is recommended for elderly, low-demand patients whose functional goals are minimal. Repair of chronic tears should be reserved for younger, healthier patients with high functional demands. Although operative management provides better functional outcomes, operative treatment of chronic pectoralis tears can be challenging. Tendon retraction, poor tendinous substance and quality of tissue, muscle atrophy, scar formation, and altered anatomy make direct repairs complicated, often necessitating auto- or allograft use. We review the various graft options and fixation methods that can be used when treating patients with chronic pectoralis major tears.

        Barrett Esophagus: When to Endoscope

        Joshua Butt,Gabor Kandel 대한소화기내시경학회 2014 Clinical Endoscopy Vol.47 No.1

Increasing interest in identifying an effective strategy for decreasing the burden of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) has been fuelled by the rising EAC rates worldwide, the morbidity associated with esophagectomy, and the development of endoscopic methods for curing early-stage EAC. In the face of this enthusiasm, however, we should be cautious about adopting an evidence-free approach to screening and one with unclear benefits and unclear costs to the community. The literature is increasingly recognizing that the value of traditional endoscopy for screening and surveillance of Barrett esophagus may be more limited than initially believed. A better understanding of the risk factors for Barrett esophagus and progression to dysplasia and a more individualized risk calculation will be useful in defining populations to consider for Barrett screening. The development of novel, nonendoscopic screening techniques and of less expensive endoscopic techniques holds promise for a cost-effective screening and surveillance method to curtail the increasing rates of EAC.

Associative Democracy : Civic Groups, Regime Support, and the Development of Democratic Values in 25 Countries

Joshua Ozymy,Sangmook Lee 서울대학교 국제학연구소 2007 Journal of International and Area Studies Vol.14 No.2

The factors influencing democratic consolidation remains a constant research agenda for political scientists. While economic and political factors can be cited as influencing consolidation at the macrolevel, ultimately it falls upon the citizenry to accept and promote democratic institutions. Democratic values, such as respect for the rule of law and tolerance of other persons are core values democratic citizens must possess for democracies to remain stable and thus for consolidation to take place. Recently many scholars have put forth the claim that we should look to civil society and especially civic groups in an effort to explain how democratic values can be transferred and maintained in the citizenry at the individual-level of analysis. This paper attempts to examine the effects of civic group involvement on democratic values across 25 countries, which vary greatly in terms of their experiences with democracy. Regionally this includes Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Using the World Values Survey (1995-1998) the analysis reveals differential effects for civic group involvement on democratic values. Results demonstrate a strong, positive relationship between civic association and democratic values cross-nationally. Specifically, a strong relationship is uncovered between religious groups and democratic values. However, this picture varies greatly amongst geographic regions. This demonstrates the increased need to study the differential effects of civic groups on democratic values cross-nationally at the individual level of analysis and examine any special role that religious groups may play in this process.

The diffusion of TIF districts among local governments

        Joshua L. Mitchell,LaShonda M. Stewart,John A. Hamman 한국행정학회 2017 International Review of Public Administration Vol.22 No.4

A substantial body of research finds local governments use financial incentives to promote economic development despite mixed evidence of the incentives’ effectiveness. Using Missouri county data from 2004 to 2013, the ensuing analysis assesses the extent to which diffusion processes help explain this conundrum. While concurring with previous research that it is difficult to empirically sort out the impacts of different diffusion mechanisms, this analysis finds that economic competition affects local governments’ adoption of TIF in conjunction with county-level characteristics. The article concludes by discussing the implications of these fi ndings in regard to TIF effectiveness.

Adding to the freshwater red algal diversity in North America: Lympha mucosa gen. et sp. nov. (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta)

        Joshua R. Evans,Iara S. Chapuis,Morgan L. Vis 한국조류학회I 2017 ALGAE Vol.32 No.3

The strictly freshwater red algal order Batrachospermales has undergone numerous taxonomic rearrangements in the recent past to rectify the paraphyly of its largest genus Batrachospermum. These systematic investigations have led to the description of new genera and species as well as re-circumscription of some taxa. Specimens collected from two loca- tions in the southeastern USA were initially identified as being allied to Batrachospermum sensu lato, but could not be assigned to any recognized species. Representative rbcL (plastid) and COI-5P (mitochondrion) sequences showed these specimens to be similar to each other and not closely matching the previously published sequence data for other Batrachospermum taxa. Comparison of sequence variation and morphology with a broader range of batrachospermalean taxa resulted in the proposal of a new monotypic genus Lympha mucosa gen. et sp. nov. to accommodate these specimens. Lympha mucosa is sister to members of a newly described genus Volatus, but the two genera are easily distinguished based on straight versus curved, twisted or spirally coiled carpogonial branch, respectively. This new taxon has morphological similarities to Batrachospermum sections Turfosa and Virescentia, but can be differentiated based on genetic divergence in rbcL and COI-5P as well as a combination of morphological characters: dense, compressed whorls, axial carposporophytes with a single type of gonimoblast filament; cortication of the main axis closely appressed; and short, straight carpogonial branch arising from the pericentral cell and carpogonia with unstalked, lanceolate trichogynes. This new taxon adds to the freshwater red algal diversity of the southeastern USA, a region already known for biodiversity and high endemism of the aquatic flora and fauna. It is also a relevant new addition to the taxonomic knowledge of the freshwater red algal Batrachospermales.

Chosŏn-Qing Tributary Discourse: Transgression, Restoration, and Textual Performativity

        Joshua Van Lieu 고려대학교 민족문화연구원 2018 Cross-Currents Vol.0 No.27

In 1864, a fire destroyed the Chosŏn-Qing frontier market for Qing merchants at Kyŏngwŏn on the Tumen River. Unable to supply timbers himself, the Kyŏngwŏn magistrate asked his Qing counterpart across the river in Hunchun, for permission to fell timbers in Qing territory. This request was to evolve into a series of violations of frontier protocol that eventually necessitated a Chosŏn diplomatic mission to Beijing to restore frontier order. Read uncritically, the tributary discourses that facilitated these interactions between Qing and Chosŏn suggest a timeless relationship borne of the forces of the cosmos itself. Taken as empirical accounts, the discourses reveal little of how the two states interacted along their border. Employing close readings of Qing and Chosŏn intergovernmental communications, this article argues that the most important question is not what these texts are about but rather what they do. Emerging scholarship in international relations and other fields employing models of a Chinese tributary system must be careful in using tributary discourse naïvely to reconstruct the policy and ideological commitments of its participants. To do so is to mistake the performative for the descriptive.
