Engrailed 1 and engrailed 2 homeoprotein transcription factors (collectively Engrailed) display graded expression in the chick optic tectum where they participate in retino-tectal patterning. In vitro, extracellular Engrailed guides retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axons and synergises with ephrin A5 to provoke the collapse of temporal growth cones. In vivo disruption of endogenous extracellular Engrailed leads to misrouting of RGC axons. Here we characterise the signalling pathway of extracellular Engrailed. Our results show that Engrailed/ephrin A5 synergy in growth cone collapse involves adenosine A1 receptor activation after Engrailed-dependent ATP synthesis, followed by ATP secretion and hydrolysis to adenosine. This is, to our knowledge, the first evidence for a role of the adenosine A1 receptor in axon guidance. Based on these results, together with higher expression of the adenosine A1 receptor in temporal than nasal growth cones, we propose a computational model that illustrates how the interaction between Engrailed, ephrin A5 and adenosine could increase the precision of the retinal projection map.

A supercritical carbon dioxide (SCC) process of dispersion of multi-walled carbon nano-tubes (MWCNTs) into epoxy resin has been developed to achieve MWCNT/epoxy com-posites (CECs) with improved mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. The synthesis of CECs has been executed at a MWCNT (phr) concentration ranging from 0.1 to 0.3 into epoxy resin (0.1 mol) at 1800 psi, 90°C, and 1500 rpm over 1 h followed by curing of the MWCNT/epoxy formulations with triethylene tetramine (15 phr). The effect of SCC treat-ment on the qualitative dispersion of MWCNTs at various concentrations into the epoxy has been investigated through spectra analyses and microscopy. The developed SCC assisted process provides a good dispersion of MWCNTs into the epoxy up to a MWCNT concentra-tion of 0.2. The effects of SCC assisted dispersion at various concentrations of MWCNTs on modificationof mechanical, thermal, dynamic mechanical thermal, and tribological proper-ties and the electrical conductivity of CECs have been investigated.

In this paper, we have introduced a generalized class S_H^i (m, n, γ, φ, ψ; α), i ∈ {0, 1} of harmonic univalent functions in unit disc U, a sufficient coefficient condition for the normalized harmonic function in this class is obtained. It is also shown that this coefficient condition is necessary for its subclass T S_H^i (m, n, γ, φ, ψ; α). We further obtained extreme points, bounds and a covering result for the class T S_H^i (m, n, γ, φ, ψ; α). Also, show that this class is closed under convolution and convex combination. While proving our results, certain conditions related to the coefficients of φ and ψ are considered, which lead to various well-known results.

The comparative study on titanium dioxide (TiO2) catalyzed photocatalytic degradation (PCD) of aqueous aromatic carboxylic acids (phthalic acid, o-nitrobenzoic acid, o-chlorobenzoic acid and benzoic acid) was carried out in the presence of UV radiation using air. The TiO2 catalyst, synthesized by sol–gel technique and calcined at 673 K, resulted ca. 100% anatase phase with 23 nm crystallite size and surface area of 37 m2/g. This catalyst was found to be efficient for PCD of phthalic acid, o-nitrobenzoic acid, ochlorobenzoic acid and benzoic acid in aqueous medium. However, the reactivity and degradation pathway of these carboxylic acids were observed to be greatly influenced by the substituent group present in the aromatic ring. The order of degradation of aromatic carboxylic acids was found to be phthalic acid > o-nitrobenzoic acid > o-chlorobenzoic acid > benzoic acid. The aromatic carboxylic acids having electron withdrawing groups such as –COOH, –NO2 and –Cl were comparatively more reactive for PCD than unsubstituted aromatic acid i.e., benzoic acid. The degradation of ortho substituted benzoic acids (having electron withdrawing groups) follows different mechanistic pathway than that of benzoic acid. Study of various operational parameters like effect of catalyst loading, initial concentration of phthalic acid and kinetics of phthalic acid PCD was also carried out in batch type photocatalytic reactor.

Chronic administration of ethanol (2 g/kg, p.o.) on days 16 and its withdrawal produced an anxiogenic reac-tion in mice as assessed in the mirrored-chamber test. Daily administration of quercetin (25 or 50 mg/kg, p.o.) prior to ethanolfor 6 days prevented withdrawal-induced anxiety in mice. However, acute administration of a single dose of quercetin (50mg/kg) to animals withdrawn from ethanol, i.e., on day 7, did not prevent withdrawal-induced anxiety. Ethanol withdrawalalso induced a significant increase in the locomotor activity of mice indicating an anxiogenic response. Daily administrationof quercetin (25 or 50 mg/kg, p.o.) prior to ethanol for 6 days prevented withdrawal-induced increased locomotor activity.Ethanol withdrawal also sensitized the convulsogenic reaction to pentylenetetrazole (PTZ). A non-convulsive dose (4060mg/kg) of PTZ produced full-blown convulsions and increased mortality in ethanol-withdrawn mice. Both acute and chronicadministration of quercetin (25 or 50 mg/kg, p.o.) produced a significant protection against ethanol withdrawal-induced re-duction in PTZ threshold in mice. The result suggests the protective effect of this safe drug, quercetin, in the management ofethanol withdrawal reactions.

We have investigated the bipolar resistive switching of Y0.95Ca0.05MnO3 (YCMO) thin film on Si substrate using pulsed laser deposition. Simulation of Mn L3,2 near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure has been executed by CTM4XAS to corroborate the presence of a mixed-valence state of Mn ions and oxygen vacancies. The charge transport in the film is described by the space charge limited mechanism. Murgatroyd and space charge limited mechanism relations are used to calculate the mobility and other switching parameters at high resistance state. With a decrease in the switching layer (near to positively biased electrode) thickness, better resistive switching was observed. This work indicates that the localized switching thickness and temperature strongly affect the resistive switching of the YCMO film.

Several types of nano-textured surfaces were studied with the goal to enhance heat removal rate in a cooling device (a heat sink) with water flow-through. The nano-textured surfaces where heat removal to flowing water took place included: (i) electrospun copper-plated thorny-devil nanofibers deposited on the copper substrate, (ii) graphene oxide flakes sprayed on the copper substrate, and (iii) silver nanowires spin-coated on a separate copper substrate. Their cooling performance was monitored by measuring the difference between the outlet and inlet temperature of water flowing through the heat sink and the temperature of the nano-textured copper substrate in the heat sink. The effect of the macroscopic vortex generator (wires) on cooling of the heat sink surface was less than that of the nano-textured surfaces, which revealed that the latter provide a much larger interfacial area, rather than an extra flow mixing, to enhance heat transfer rate. Of the nano-textured surfaces the most significant cooling enhancement was achieved with silver nanowires.

In this communication, we have successfully fabricated mixed valent La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) manganite based (i) ZnO/LCMO/LAO and (ii) LMO/LCMO/LAO (LMO: LaMnO3–d thin layer; LAO: LaAlO3 substrate) thin film heterostructures using chemical solution deposition (CSD) method. 100 nm LCMO layer was initially grown on single crystalline (100) LAO substrate followed by the growth of 50 nm ZnO and LMO layers separately on the two different heterostructures. In the present study, upper layers of ZnO and LMO were intentionally prepared at 700 °C for 12 h under air environment, thereby some naturally created oxygen vacancies are expected to be present in their lattices. Presence of oxygen vacancies makes ZnO and LMO layers as n–type oxides in the heterostructures. Temperature dependent current–voltage (I–V) characteristics and interface resistivity (under different applied electric fields across interface only) were carried out to understand their charge transport behavior. A strong effect of electric field on the resistivity behavior has been observed due to a reasonable electrically polarizable (active) nature of ZnO and LMO thin layers. Zener double exchange (ZDE) polynomial law has been employed to understand various scattering processes as source of resistivity across, both, ZnO/ LCMO and LMO/LCMO interfaces. Transport properties and charge conduction mechanisms have been discussed and compared for both the interfaces in the context of interface state and barrier between electrically active layer and LCMO film. Also, power consumption criteria have been discussed in detail for the presently studied heterostructures for their practical device applications such as field effect devices, memory devices, read–write head devices or any other spintronic devices.
