      • Analysis of collective behavior and grasp motion in human hand

Jongwoo Park,Joono Cheong 제어로봇시스템학회 2010 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2010 No.10

In this paper, we propose a method for analyzing and synthesizing human’s grasping motion and the corresponding collective behaviors in the human hand. We apply PCA technique for a dimension reduction and then Gaussian mixture model(GMM) in order to identify the grasp type and the associated object parameters for a given joint data set. We verify the validity of the analysis through simulation with human grasp data captured by a data glove.

Design and Fabrication of Long‑Term Stable Dye‑Sensitized Solar Cells: Effect of Water Contents in Electrolytes on the Performance

Jongwoo Park,Phillip Lee,Min Jae Ko 한국정밀공학회 2019 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.6 No.1

The effects of water-containing I−/ I3 − liquid electrolytes on the photovoltaic performance and long-term stability of ruthenium based complex Z907 dye was examined in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Despite of high water content up to 60 vol% in organic solvent-based liquid electrolyte, the photovoltaic properties and long-term stability measured under the standard global (G) air-mass (AM) 1.5 solar irradiation were not significantly affected. The underlying correlation between the effects of water and the photovoltaic performances were identified by UV–visible spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. We investigated the long-term stability of performance for DSSCs in conjunction with I−/ I3 − redox electrolytes in different water compositions. The findings revealed that the competitive photovoltaic performance and longterm stability of water-containing DSSCs mainly depends on the hydrophobicity of dye as well as the transport phenomena of I3 − throughout the electrolytes. The water-based DSSCs proposed herein are free from water permeation issues and these results will provide great insight into the development of less expensive and more environmental friendly DSSCs.

      • A Study on the Development of a Day-to-Day Mental Stress Monitoring System using Personal Physiological Data

        Jongwoo Park,Jongsu Kim,Sung-Phil Kim 제어로봇시스템학회 2018 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2018 No.10

Pervasive healthcare and wireless health monitoring has been a central area to innovate novel personal and precise medicine for individuals. Many recent wireless health monitoring systems draw upon physiological signals acquired from wearable wristbands. However, most studies have paid attention to monitoring physical health states and relatively few efforts have been made to develop pervasive healthcare solutions for mental health. This study investigates a plausibility of the development of a wireless monitoring system for mental health in individuals by collecting and analyzing physiological signals from a wristband in naturalistic daily life environments. In particular, we aim to predict one’s mental stress level using the short-term heart rate variability (HRV) that is estimated from photoplethysmography (PPG) signals. Day-to-day measurements of PPG signals over a week along with a daily log of stress level were conducted three times a day for a week in each participant, in which participants performed measurements by themselves in their own living circumstances. Measurement times were distributed across noon, evening and night. The recorded signals were wirelessly transmitted to a smartphone via the Bluetooth link. The HRV feature of the ratio of high-frequency (0.15Hz - 0.4Hz) power over low-frequency (0.04Hz - 0.15Hz) power was used to predict individual daily stress levels. Prediction with the night measurements showed the highest accuracy compared to the measurements in other times; individual prediction accuracy reached as high as >90% using the night measurements. Across-subject validation of the proposed system demonstrated fair correlations between true and predicted stress scores, implying a possibility to generalize the system for populations. The results of this study may prove the possibility of the development of wireless mental health monitoring system in ambient environments.

      • Discussion on Aesthetic Value of Freestyle Taekwondo Poomsae Competitions

        ( Jongwoo Park ),( Yongkyu Ahn ) 한국체육학회 2016 국제스포츠과학 학술대회 Vol.2016 No.1

Taekwondo is a traditional Korean martial art, and has developed to a sport loved by many people around the world. Taekwondo has been selected as the formal item in Olympic Games since 2000, and currently have 206 member countries. It has grown to representative brand of Korea. Starting with the first World Taekwondo Hanmadang in 2006, World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) introduced freestyle Poomsae, and by 2012, freestyle Poomsae was selected as a formal item at World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships. Many coaches and athletes started to show their interest in freestyle Poomsae. Freestyle Poomsae is created with all Taekwondo movements, skills, acrobatic moves, dance, and music unlike the traditional Poomsae, and the order of movements can be freely organized by the creator. In freestyle Poomsae, an athlete must direct and express combined Taekwondo movements within limited time of 60-70 seconds. Scoring standard consists of skill (6.0) and direction (4.0) unlike the official Poomsae. The skill part consists of the difficulty of kicks, accuracy of movements, and overall completeness. The direction part consists of creativity, harmony, expression of chi, music, and dance movements. Freestyle Poomsae could give both performer and the audience aesthetic pleasure and impression by showing martial art quality, skill, direction, and beauty of completeness of Taekwondo. Such freestyle Poomsae competitions provide the performer the self-fulfillment of self-realization like figure skating or gymnastics, and gives the audience expectation and attraction. Recent freestyle competitions have shown high-quality competitions. This elevates the aesthetic value of Taekwondo, fulfills excellence and new recognition of Taekwondo, and is expected to activate and expand Taekwondo training. Freestyle Poomsae is a great tool to fulfill one’s desire for aesthetic experience, physical activity, self-recognition, self-expression, and self-realization. However, freestyle Poomsae should not put more importance on elements from other fields beside Taekwondo. Moreover, in order for freestyle Poomsae to become international, concept of Poomsae must be changed. Current concept of Poomsae is limited to ‘self-training with imaginary opponent’. Hence, expanded concept of Poomsae is necessary to persuade and attract many Taekwondo trainees around the world.

      • 양안의 통일문제에 관한 일고찰

박종우(Park Jongwoo) 한국외국어대학교 대만연구센터 2017 대만연구 Vol.- No.11

The issue of the China-Taiwan cross-strait relations has been an issue of legitimacy competition between the Chinese Nationalist Party and the Chinese Communist Party, and it has been expanded to the issue of unification-independence with the establishment of the Democratic Progressive Party. The Chinese Communist Party has argued for the one country, two systems, while the Chinese Nationalist Party has argued for the one country, two regions and the Democratic Progressive Party has argued for the one China, one Taiwan. And each party has been achieving their own political goals under the policy to maintain the status quo. According to the trend of the annually conducted public opinion polls, the Taiwanese people have the identity as a Taiwanese citizen, they pursue independence, and the rate of preferring the Democratic Progressive Party has been steadily increasing. Such phenomenon can be seen as a factor which will enable the Democratic Progressive Party to hold on power for a long term in the future. The mainland China is not trusted by the Taiwanese people even in the issue of legitimacy due to the undemocratic political system of the socialist system. Against this backdrop, the mainland China is faced with the issue of the legitimacy of political system and the possibility of the long-term ruling of the Democratic Progressive Party, and therefore, it is the time to pursue change in the China-Taiwan cross-strait relations. As for the China-Taiwan unification, predicted scenarios include unification by force, independence of Taiwan, maintenance of the status quo, unification through the introduction of the one country, two systems by Taiwan, unification through grand compromise between China and the US, unification through the change of one country, two systems, etc. Among them, it can be said that there is little possibility of unification through the introduction of one country, two systems by Taiwan as well as the independence of Taiwan. Unification by force and unification through the US-China grand compromise are possible, but there are some difficulties in reality. Maintenance of the status quo is not working to the advantage of China as it can be seen in the trend of public opinion polls. Therefore, what can be chosen by the mainland China is to make a breakthrough by seeing the alternative to the one country, two systems through the strategic innovation of political system. Discussions on the special political region and the federal system can be an alternative.
