      • Neurotoxicant (fenitrothion) alters superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase activities in Chironomus riparius Mg.

        Jinhee Choi(Jinhee Choi) 한국환경성돌연변이발암원학회 2001 한국환경성돌연변이·발암원학회지 Vol.21 No.2

Effects of exposure to a neurotoxicant, fenitrothion on antioxidant enzyme activities in Chironomus riparius Mg. (Diptera, Chironomidae) larvae were evaluated under laboratory conditions. Exposure to this chemical led to an increase of cupper, zinc type superoxide dismutase and manganese type superoxide dismutase activities and to a decrease of glutathion peroxidase activity. An activation of catalase was observed in the larvae exposed to high fenitrothion concentration. The response of superoxide dismutase was rapid and sensitive to low chemical concentrations, but changes in catalase, total peroxidase and glutathion peroxidase were less sensitive. In this study, antioxidant enzyme activities in Chironomus riparius larvae were identified as pertinent biomarkers for environmental monitoring.

Fabrication of CuSn Nanofibers Prepared via Electrospinning

        Choi, Jinhee,Park, Juyun,Choi, Ahrom,Lee, Seokhee,Koh, Sung-Wi,Kang, Yong-Cheol The Basic Science Institute Chosun University 2017 조선자연과학논문집 Vol.10 No.4

The Cu and CuSn/PVP nanofibers were fabricated by electrospinning method by controlling various parameters. The precursor solution was prepared with copper(II) acetate monohydrate ($Cu(CH_3COO)_2$) and tin chloride dihydrate ($SnCl_2{\cdot}2H_2O$), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) for adjusting viscosity. The fabricated nanofibers were calcined at 873 K in Ar atmospheric environment for 5 hours to remove the solvent and polymer. The morphology and diameter of nanofibers were measured by optical microscopy (OM) with Motic image plus 2.0 program. The components and chemical environment were investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). From the XPS survey spectra, we confirmed that CuSn/PVP nanofibers were successfully fabricated. The XPS peaks of C 1s and N 1s were remarkably decreased after calcination of the nanofibers at 873 K. It implies that the PVP was completely decomposed after calcination at 873 K.

A luxury brand bag is a medium to symbolize brand identity and plays a role in enhancing brand value. A typical example is a designer signature bag such as Hermes Kelly Bag, Birkin Bag, and Lady Dior Bag. The purpose of this study is to analyze the design changes and acceptance of identity of luxury brand bags and examine the design characteristics that succeed to the value of a luxury brand bag. The subjects of the study focused on Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Chanel bags. Photos were collected from www.vogue.co. uk. based on the fashion collections from S/S 2007 to S/S 2016. The study methodology was to analyze the kinds, shapes, colors, materials, and the ornament of subject bags based on previous studies. The results of the study were summarized as follows. For the identity and design changes of each brand, Chanel has tried to combine functionality pursued in the past with constantly changing femininity by making bags in fantastic moods using various materials and free shapes. Gucci has constantly used Ornament elements holding the brand identity of classic bags and trend colors to keep tradition. Louis Vuitton holds fast to its functional shape to protect brand identity through design philosophy that started with a travel luggage and attempts to express modern emotion through Ornament changes. This study confirmed that luxury brands have accepted their unique design characteristics holding brand identity to improve their brand value and attempted to change constructive elements in many different ways for modern reinterpretation.

COVID-19 and Risk Factors of Anxiety and Depression in South Korea

        Jinhee Hyun,Seokjoo Kim,Heeguk Kim,Yun-Jung Choi,Yun-Kyeung Choi,Yu-Ri Lee,Jong-Woo Paik,Jong-Sun Lee,Kihyun Kim,Jin Yong Jun,So Hee Lee,Sunju Sohn 대한신경정신의학회 2021 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.18 No.9

Objective The aims of this study were to explore the prevalence of and identify predictors of anxiety and depression related to coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) in South Korea. Methods The analysis is based on a quota survey design and a sampling frame that permitted recruitment of a national sample of 1,014 individuals between March 17–31, 2020. Several standardized measurements were used, including GAD-7, PHQ-9, COVID-19 related fear, restrictions in deaily life, as well as sociodemographic information and physical and psychosocial needs during the pandemic. Multiple logistic regression was conducted to analyze the influence of sociodemographic factors, fear, and physical/psychosocial needs on anxiety and depression. Results Significant numbers of the respondents were identifiable anxiety (19.0%) and depression group (17.5%), respectively. This indicates that the depression and anxiety prevalence rate after the COVID-19 is substantially high compared to the depression rate of 2.6% in 2020 and 2.8% in 2018 both reported in the Korea Community Health Survey and the anxiety rate of 5.7% reported in 2016 Survey of Mental Disorders in Korea. Multiple logistic regression results showed age, COVID-19 related fear, and the level of restrictions in daily as significant factors in understanding and predicting the anxiety group. Likfewise, the COVID-19 related fear, restrictions in daily life, and need for economic support were important predictors in predicting the depression group. Conclusion Findings on predictors for greater vulnerability to anxiety and depression has important implications for public mental health in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Antioxidant and apoptotic activity of cocoa bean husk extract on prostate cancer cells

        Choi Jinhee,Yang Changwon,Lim Whasun,Song Gwonhwa,최해연 대한독성 유전단백체 학회 2022 Molecular & cellular toxicology Vol.18 No.2

Background Although prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, its incidence among Asians, who consume foods rich in phenols, is relatively low compared with that in other populations. Cocoa bean husk (CBH) is an important by-product of the cocoa industry; its polyphenol content (catechin, epicatechin, and procyanidin B) is as high as that of cocoa beans. However, there are no studies on the anticancer effect of CBH. Herein, we assessed the antioxidant and anticancer effects of CBH on prostate cancer cells. Objectives We fractionated CBH ethanol crude extract and compared the total polyphenol content, total flavonoid content, and DPPH and ABTS + radical scavenging activities of the fractions. Catechin, epicatechin, and procyanidin B were analysed by HPLC in the ethyl acetate (EAF) and butanol (BF) fractions, which had the highest physiological content and antioxidant activity. PC3 and DU145 cells were treated with the two fractions, and annexin V/propidium iodide, and TUNEL assays were performed to assess apoptosis and DNA fragmentation, respectively. Results The highest phytochemical content and antioxidant activity were observed in EAF, followed by those in BF. HPLC analysis revealed high content of phenolic compounds in both these fractions. Notably, catechin (5.64 mg/g), epicatechin (20.47 mg/g), and procyanidin B (20.29 mg/g) were abundant in EAF. Both fractions induced apoptosis in a concentrationdependent manner in PC3 and DU145 cells, and DNA fragmentation at a concentration of 200 μg/mL. Conclusion CBH, a by-product of cocoa processing, contains large amounts of phenolic compounds and exhibits high antioxidant activity and anticancer effects on prostate cancer cells. CBH has potential applications as a functional food material.

      • Skin corrosion and irritation test of sunscreen nanoparticles using reconstructed 3D human skin model

Choi, Jonghye,Kim, Hyejin,Choi, Jinhee,Oh, Seung Min,Park, Jeonggue,Park, Kwangsik The Korean Society of Environmental Toxicology 2014 환경독성보건학회지 Vol.29 No.-

Objectives Effects of nanoparticles including zinc oxide nanoparticles, titanium oxide nanoparticles, and their mixtures on skin corrosion and irritation were investigated by using in vitro 3D human skin models ($KeraSkin^{TM}$) and the results were compared to those of an in vivo animal test. Methods Skin models were incubated with nanoparticles for a definite time period and cell viability was measured by the 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2.5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide method. Skin corrosion and irritation were identified by the decreased viability based on the pre-determined threshold. Results Cell viability after exposure to nanomaterial was not decreased to the pre-determined threshold level, which was 15% after 60 minutes exposure in corrosion test and 50% after 45 minutes exposure in the irritation test. IL-$1{\alpha}$ release and histopathological findings support the results of cell viability test. In vivo test using rabbits also showed non-corrosive and non-irritant results. Conclusions The findings provide the evidence that zinc oxide nanoparticles, titanium oxide nanoparticles and their mixture are 'non corrosive' and 'non-irritant' to the human skin by a globally harmonized classification system. In vivo test using animals can be replaced by an alternative in vitro test.
