        Effects of Education Policies and Institutions on Student Performance

        Using panel estimates from the Program for International Student Assessment dataset, this study examines how education policies work as the quality of institutions improves. The findings suggest that autonomy over budget-related decisions positively affects the overall performance of students as the quality of institutions improves, whereas autonomy over academic decisions has an ambiguous effect. Considering that country-level institutions interact with school auto- nomy, the performance of low-ranking students is improved by pro- viding schools with enough power to decide on academic course con- tent and textbooks. Meanwhile, providing schools with great autonomy over budget-related decisions benefits high-ranking students.

        고등학생의 SNS 이용 행태가 자아존중감과 공적 자의식에 미치는 영향

        본 연구는 우리나라 고등학생을 대상으로 SNS 이용 행태를 알아보고 SNS 이용 행태가 자아존중감과 공적 자의식에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고자 하였다. 연구 대상은 경기도에 위치한 고등학교 2학년 학생 총 442명(남학생 197명, 여학생 245명)으로 하였으며, 이들의 SNS 이용 행태를 측정하기 위하여 자주 이용하는 SNS종류, 이용 빈도, 이용 시간, SNS 친구 수, 이용 행동 등으로 구성된 질문지를 사용하여 자료를 수집하였다. 또한 이들 고등학생들은 자아존중감과 공적자의식을 조사하기 위한 자기보고식 질문지를 평가하였다. 본 연구에서 나타난 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, SNS 이용행태를 분석해 본 결과, 고등학생들은 인맥중심의 SNS를 자주 이용하는 것으로 나타났고, 고등학생들의 SNS 이용 빈도, 이용 시간, 친구 수는 개인적 편차가 크게 나타났으며, 이용행동의 생산적 활동과 소비적 활동은 중앙값과 비교하였을 때 비교적 적게 하는 것으로 보고되었다. 둘째, SNS 이용 행태에 따라 자아존중감과 공적 자의식에 미치는 영향을 분석해 본 결과, SNS 이용 행태의 하위 요인 중 SNS 친구 수가 많을수록 고등학생의 자아존중감이 높은 것으로 나타났으며, SNS 이용 행태의 하위요인 중 SNS 이용 시간, 친구 수, 이용행동 중 생산적 활동과 소비적 활동이 높은 경우 고등학생의 공적 자의식 또한 높은 것으로 나타났다. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of SNS use patterns on high school students’ self-esteem and public self-consciousness. The participants for this study were 442 (197 boys, 245 girls) high school students recruited from two high schools located in Gyung Gi province in Korea. The study participants responded to SNS use pattern questionnaires which consisted of questions reflecting the following; their utilization of SNS, the type of most frequently used SNS, SNS usage frequency, usage hours, the number of SNS friends, and their usage behavior patterns. The participants completed self-esteem and public self-consciousness questionnaires as well. Data collected from the participants were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and multiple regression. The results of this study were as follows. First, the study participants were shown to use SNS mostly for the purpose of social networking, however, their SNS usage frequency, usage hours per week, and number of SNS friends varied by a wide range among individuals. Moreover,the majority of the study participants were relatively less engaging in productive or consuming activities compared to the median itself. Second, the number of SNS friends were indicated as a variable which significantly predicts the high school students’ high self-esteem. On the other hand, SNS usage hours per week, the number of SNS friends, and SNS usage patterns such as engaging in productive activities and consuming activities were shown as significant predictors of a generally higher public self-consciousness amongst these high school students.

        연속적인 시계열 예측을 위한 디노이징 다변량 시계열 모델링

        The research field of time series forecasting predicts the future time point using seasonality in time series. In the industrial environment, since decision-making through continuous perspective prediction of the future is important, multi-step time series forecasting is necessary. However, multi-step prediction is highly unstable because of its dependency on predicted value of previous time prediction result. Therefore, the traditional time series forecasting makes a statistical prediction for the single time point. To address this limitation, we propose a novel encoder-decoder based neural network named ‘DTSNet’ which predicts multi-step time points for multivariate time series. To stabilize multi-step prediction, we exploit positional encoding to enhance representation for time point and propose a novel denoising training method. Moreover, we propose dual attention to resolve long-term dependencies and modeling complex patterns in time series, and we adopt multi-head strategy at linear projection layer for variable-specific modeling. To verify the performance improvement of our approach, we compare and analyze it with baseline models, and we demonstrate the proposed methods through comparison tests, such as, component ablation study and denoising degree experiment.

        Isolation of a Korean Domestic Microalga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii KNUA021, and Analysis of Its Biotechnological Potential

        A freshwater microalga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii KNUA021, was characterized for its potential as a biochemical feedstock. Its optimal growth was observed when the culture was incubated at 25oC and pH 9.4. However, the isolate was capable of survival and growth under a variety of temperatures (10-30oC) and pH (pH 4.0-12.0) conditions. The total lipid content of the isolate was 21.7% of dry weight and it was found that a high-value fatty alcohol, hexadecenol (C20H40O), was autotrophically produced by strain KNUA021. In addition, a nutritionally important C18:3 ω3 (α-linolenic acid, ALA) was also identified in this photosynthetic microorganism as one of the major fatty acids. Hence, C. reinhardtii KNUA021 appears to show promise for use in the production of microalgae-based biochemicals.

        IRAK4 as a Molecular Target in the Amelioration of Innate Immunity–Related Endotoxic Shock and Acute Liver Injury by Chlorogenic Acid

        <P>Mice lacking the IL-1R-associated kinase 4 (IRAK4) are completely resistant to LPS-induced endotoxic disorder or the TLR9 agonist CpG DNA plus D-galactosamine-induced acute liver injury (ALI), whereas wild-type strains succumb. However, translational drugs against sepsis or ALI remain elusive. Lonicerae flos extract is undergoing the clinical trial phase I in LPS-injected healthy human volunteers for sepsis treatment. In the current study, chlorogenic acid (CGA), a major anti-inflammatory constituent of lonicerae flos extract, rescued endotoxic mortality of LPS-intoxicated C57BL/6 mice, as well as ameliorated ALI of LPS/D-galactosamine-challenged C57BL/6 mice. As a mechanism, CGA inhibited various TLR agonist-, IL-1 alpha-, or high-mobility group box-1-stimulated autophosphorylation (activation) of IRAK4 in peritoneal macrophages from C57BL/6 or C3H/HeJ mice via directly affecting the kinase activity of IRAK4, a proximal signal transducer in the MyD88-mediated innate immunity that enhances transcriptional activity of NF-kappa B or AP-1. CGA consequently attenuated protein or mRNA levels of NF-kappa B/AP-1 target genes encoding TNF-alpha, IL-1 alpha, IL-6, and high-mobility group box-1 in vivo under endotoxemia or ALI. Finally, this study suggests IRAK4 as a molecular target of CGA in the treatment of innate immunity-related shock and organ dysfunction following insult of various TLR pathogens from bacteria and viruses.</P>

      • Gold Recovery using Porphyrin-based Polymer from Electronic Waste: Adsorbent Regeneration and Reuse

        Due to the rapid development of innovations, the amount of discarded electrical or electronic equipment, called electronic wastes, have been gradually increased over the world and as a consequence, the treatment of the wastes brought a great attention to many researchers. Despite its small amount, precious metals in electronic wastes have large potential values as a future secondary source of metals. However, separation and refining of these metals are complicated and none of them are chosen to be commercialized. As one of the promising adsorbents, porphyrin-based porous polymer, named COP-180, has been developed for the selective adsorption and separation of gold. Although the characteristics and adsorption abilities of COP-180 has been deeply investigated, the strategies on the desorption and recovery of adsorbed gold and the regeneration of the polymer are still unknown. Herein, a hydrometallurgical method for efficient gold desorption and recovery from COP-180 was suggested. Chloride, thiosulfate and thiourea, which are typical non-cyanide gold leaching solutions, were evaluated for gold desorption from the polymer. Leaching solution of thiourea in acidic condition provided the best desorption performance. The results of FTIR analysis showed that the structure of COP-180 was maintained during desorption with thiourea, while changes of structures were detected with acid chloride solution as it supported the suitability of thiourea in either gold desorption or adsorbent regeneration. The ratio of adsorbed gold over the polymer was varied to analyze its effect on desorption efficiency. The less amount of gold was adsorbed on the polymer, the higher gold desorption efficiency was obtained. More than 98% of the adsorbed gold was desorbed from COP-180 by the treatment of 0.1M of thiourea for 2 hours at 50°C. The regeneration and reusability of the adsorbent was evaluated in three consecutive cycles. All these present works suggested that the desorption method via acid thiourea can offer a workable way of efficient gold recovery and regeneration of the adsorbent.

      • Reporting nationwide monitoring results about high risk pests in 2018

        고위험해충에 대한 국내 유입/발생 여부를 상시 조사하고, 조기 대응하는 전국 민·관·학 예찰협력 네트워크 구성을 위하여, 고위험해충 11종(Bactrocera dorsalis, Solenopsis invicta, Cydia pomonella, Drosophila suzukii, Bactrocera depressa, Lobesia botrana, Proeulia sp., Aceria diospyri, Stephaitis takeyai, Bactrocera minax, Bactrocera tsuneonis)에 대하여 7개 대학(경상대학교, 군산대학교, 서울대학교, 순천대학교, 안동대학교, 제주대학교, 충북대학교)이 참여한 전국 권역별 예찰조사를 2018년 6월부터 10월까지 실시하였다. 조사결과, B. dorsalis, S. invicta, C. pomonella은 발견되지 않았으며, D. suzukii (3,584개체), B. depressa (21개체) 채집되었다. 포도, 단감, 감귤의 유입우려해충(L. botrana, P. sp., A. diospyri, S. takeyai, B. minax, B. tsuneonis)은 발견되지 않았다. 본 조사연구를 통하여, 고위험해충을 조기 탐색할 수 있는 7개 대학을 통한 전국단위의 감시체계를 구축하였고, 수출단지 상대국우려병해충 및 수출품목에 대한 정밀 예찰과 관리를 통한 수출지원, 국경 이후 병해충 예찰․관리를 위한 거점 확보의 성과를 이루었다.
